Thank God DataLounge Isn’t Reddit

I would consider myself a semi-casual user of Reddit and have made a few posts over the years. However, lately moderators have been absolutely insane regarding what posts they deem acceptable — and very arbitrarily, mind you.

They keep stating I’ve violated the rules of a subreddit. However, if I message them exactly how I violated “rule 7b” they can’t or won’t tell me how it applies.

Also, Reddit has become like Facebook in that it auto-flags certain words or phrases as an automatic post deletion. I can’t even type Designing Women quotes without getting flagged.

Anyway, with all of its faults, I’m glad we still have DL. I can post on here and you all might rip me a new asshole, but at least I’m allowed to actually make a post or reply.

by Anonymousreply 81November 10, 2022 2:29 AM

Post about De$igning Women then OP.

by Anonymousreply 1October 23, 2021 12:28 AM

Reddit blows. Whatever I say on there gets downvoted for no reason — here on DL it’s WWs!

by Anonymousreply 2October 23, 2021 12:35 AM

Isn't it, though?

Isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 3October 23, 2021 12:38 AM

This is sort of related- are there any stats on the number of people who regularly post on DL? Is it perhaps the 80/20 rule- 20% of the members post 80% of the comments? The owners of this site may be somewhat hesitant to publish these numbers. It would be interesting to know if there are 100 regular posters, or 10,000.

by Anonymousreply 4October 23, 2021 12:42 AM

r4 it's certainly less now that Primetime has been on half the time lately.

by Anonymousreply 6October 23, 2021 12:44 AM

I've found that, in general, over the last few years, the role of message board moderators has seemed to attracted the same kind of people who are attracted to serving on HOA or co-op boards.

by Anonymousreply 7October 23, 2021 12:48 AM

R2, that's all of us, and thank fucking god!

You know what makes me run screaming back to Datalounge? The way everyone prefaces their replies with "I mean...".

That's even worse than starting a sentence with "So...".

And sometimes the entire statement is "I mean...". That's it.

What the fuck is that?

by Anonymousreply 8October 23, 2021 12:51 AM

Idiocy. I'm currently hating on "You really thought you did something with that".

by Anonymousreply 9October 23, 2021 12:53 AM

You can almost tell the people who were Redditors before discovering Datalounge. They try to come in and scold and shame and 'speak' in a Reddity manner, and do not/cannot take a joke. A few, or one prolific one, straggled in to the Jeopardy threads and was offended on behalf of bullshit, and used their slippery Reddit-talk: "I feel like", "I mean", "do you guys think blah blah blah?","I sort of think", "I kind of feel like", etc.

by Anonymousreply 10October 23, 2021 1:06 AM

I kind of feel like they need to die in a grease fire.

by Anonymousreply 11October 23, 2021 1:18 AM

So R12, I mean....you're not wrong...

by Anonymousreply 12October 23, 2021 1:21 AM

r10 you can tell a cusp Millennial raised on the internet with that language, and yes they all speak the same way, in a pop-psychology pseudobabble that usually leads with statements like "he's not wrong" rather than "he's right" because to agree with him would potentially offend someone or not give you a perceived out.

by Anonymousreply 13October 23, 2021 1:21 AM

R11*^

by Anonymousreply 14October 23, 2021 1:22 AM

[quote]they all speak the same way, in a pop-psychology pseudobabble that usually leads with statements like "he's not wrong" rather than "he's right" because to agree with him would potentially offend someone or not give you a perceived out.

R13, I knew it was an easy out, but I never thought about it in that bigger context.

Will this ever end? They're offended by everything. They're offended when someone takes the Aldi cart that already has the quarter in it. They're definitely offended by nice apartments. Those who foster dogs (and I am one) get offended when a well-meaning person tells them they could never foster dogs because they 'just love them too much.'

And they get all this support online for this crazy thinking.

by Anonymousreply 15October 23, 2021 1:36 AM

At least Datalounge cares enough to tell you a fucking hysteric.

They're hollow. They tell themselves they're as good as their social media tells them they are, they think they're angels, and yet they'd be the first ones to ghost you when you needed a ride home from the hospital.

Or more realistic, they'd document giving you a ride home from the hospital on their phone with dramatic photos and video and upload it to SM so everyone could tell them how A M A Z I N G they are!

by Anonymousreply 16October 23, 2021 1:42 AM

r15 don't forget that they "feel unsafe" if someone disagrees with their very sane opinions!

It's all lightly coded victim language. The use of those specific words evokes sympathy, or at least it used to, in a lot of people. They've been raised by manipulative marketing messages, cynicism, crowd activism on the internet, the desire to feel unique and special even though you're just like everyone else, and looking for easy solutions to complex problems. It's created a generation of cynical, unserious narcissists who are so busy looking for perceived slights that they can use to their advantage and feel powerful that they lose sight of pretty much everything of meaning.

It's also used by people who ten years ago were probably bullying others in a different way with racial slurs, the "f" word, etc. Bullies will adapt to whatever techniques give them the most power in any situation. Currently it's the language of intersectionality and victim culture, on both the left and the right.

by Anonymousreply 17October 23, 2021 1:44 AM

r16 the hollowness comes from narcissism, focus on themselves over other people and especially larger society. Social media has significantly multiplied the number of narcissists in first world countries.

by Anonymousreply 18October 23, 2021 1:46 AM

Most Social Media sites are overloaded with teenagers who think they are geniuses. Or middle-aged people from Bumphuc, Indiana. I remember one guy (who used his real name and owned a carpet-laying business) replying to a sort-of associate of mine (who was the No. 2 guy at the largest company of it's kind on the planet) what kind of an clueless businessman idiot he was, clearly not understanding who he was communicating with- and Mr. Big's signature always had his real name and even a real picture of himself. Now, if he didn't agree with him, OK, I understand that, but adding the other stuff made him look dumb.

by Anonymousreply 19October 23, 2021 1:59 AM

No doubt OP is still traumatized by Television Without Pity,

by Anonymousreply 20October 23, 2021 2:03 AM

r19 you would appreciate @RadioFreeTom on Twitter, he's written a book on the Death of Expertise.

by Anonymousreply 21October 23, 2021 2:03 AM

[quote] The use of those specific words evokes sympathy, or at least it used to, in a lot of people.

R17 Are people starting to see it for what it is now? Is it almost over?

You appear to understand this phenomenon much more keenly than I.

by Anonymousreply 22October 23, 2021 2:04 AM

R21 - Thank-you! Excellent reference.

by Anonymousreply 23October 23, 2021 2:08 AM

r22 I'm just another guy bloviating on the internet, although I do think I have a better understanding of the phenomenon than most given my specific background. My opinion is pieced together from more qualified experts' opinions and personal experience. But I don't have a Doctorate in Psychology or anything, so take it with a grain of salt!

I do think that we've reached and crossed the peak of some aspects of it, in more people are recognizing it for what it is - an attempt to manipulate others around you and gain some sense of power and control, and feel like the star of your own movie. People are bored and generally comfortable in our culture so they look for ways to elevate themselves. But it's all so messy and chaotic and there's so many different forces acting at once that it's very difficult to see a way through it.

by Anonymousreply 24October 23, 2021 2:13 AM

OP yet you copy and paste headlines from Reddit all the time

by Anonymousreply 25October 23, 2021 2:16 AM

@R2-Quote: " That's even worse than starting a sentence with "So...". (Right?! This!) I mean, seriously? They can't just say that they agree and maybe add an original thought of their own? by Anonymousreply 26October 23, 2021 2:21 AM

Reddit is less petty and therefore more interesting. But I only post and play here. I'm a loyal betch.

by Anonymousreply 27October 23, 2021 2:31 AM

I do not know what will become of me if we ever lose DL. Oh, we will try to use Reddit but those sanctimonious, condescending, faux virtual signaling pricks will make it miserable. I read a post today from some anti-vaxer idiot with the IQ of a squid. "You do whut the gubmint tells ya and ya call me stewpit?" I simply replied that she was free to die stupidly for her freedumb. I was given some warning that I do not even understand nor do I give one tiny drop of a fuck about. My response was deleted. Thank God for home, DL!!!!

by Anonymousreply 28October 23, 2021 2:35 AM

Everyone is so concerned about "suicide triggers" that you could LITERALLY KILL PEOPLE BY THE THOUSANDS if it were left up to pollute other minds, r28.

by Anonymousreply 32October 23, 2021 2:46 AM

@R31- 😂

by Anonymousreply 33October 23, 2021 2:47 AM

I read OP’s post in Dawn Davenport’s voice.

by Anonymousreply 34October 23, 2021 2:48 AM

The Drag Race subreddits would make your heads explode.

by Anonymousreply 35October 23, 2021 2:49 AM

R35- I was on Reddit to get updates on Dead Brian and the Murdaugh gothic horror. The only other thread I check out is the one for DL. To assure myself that it is still there. 😳

by Anonymousreply 36October 23, 2021 2:54 AM

R28, I don't even look at the political/covid subreddits.

I couldn't sleep the night before last and I was looking at the Kitchen Confidential one for restaurant cooks, and a guy posted a photo of a sheet pan full of peeled garlic cloves about to go into a commercial oven. Everyone was enjoying the garlic talk and then in came some little shit who probably never did a goddamned thing in his life and he asked whether the OP peeled all the garlic, or if it came prepeeled. The OP said it comes that way and the little fucker proceeded to tell everyone that he saw a documentary on Netflix that 400% of the world's unwhole garlic, including prepeeled garlic, is peeled by Chinese prisoners who have to peel it with their teeth because garlic is so astringent that it makes the skin come off their fingers or some shit.

Yay.

by Anonymousreply 37October 23, 2021 2:55 AM

Gotta love the Reddit woke police.

by Anonymousreply 38October 23, 2021 2:56 AM

R37- They ruin everything. Everything. But the way you worded that did make me laugh. 😆

by Anonymousreply 39October 23, 2021 3:01 AM

He found it "...disturbing to say the least", and so was compelled to come dot dot dot disturb everyone else with he dubious facts.

Someone else commented that garlic commercially separated from the peel using high pressure air or or gas, which sounds more likely.

by Anonymousreply 42October 23, 2021 3:18 AM

[quote]I don't even look at the political/covid subreddits.

The main r/Politics subreddit is right-down-the-middle moderate. Lots of the same news stories get posted there and here.

r/StupidPol is hard left but hates identity politics as much as they do centrism. They and r/RedScarePod seem to fill the self-consciously hip, [italic]Cum Town[italic]–listening, dirtbag-left void left after r/ChapoTrapHouse got banned.

If you want to stay abreast of the latest COVID science, r/COVID19 is great. Their moderation is extremely strict—primary sources only and no anecdotal postings.

As a reddit user myself I have to agree with OP

We have FAR better freedom of speech here, there are some real pieces of work on there who are thin skinned to the extreme

[quote]I've found that, in general, over the last few years, the role of message board moderators has seemed to attracted the same kind of people who are attracted to serving on HOA or co-op boards.

R7, it does depend on which reddit sub, some are just like you describe, others are fine. But the worst by far are the overall sitewide site moderators, a lot of whom seem to be exactly the people R17 described so well. And they operate by rules that are opaque arbitrary and ambiguous, there is no transparency, they dont even explain what the issue is when you trangress their unwritten rules - exactly as OP describes so well

Dam glad I got this place

You can not call a murdering coward a coward for committing suicide. It doesn't matter if you type in all block letters that you are not calling all suicides cowards , just the ones who strangle their girlfriend to death and leave her body in a desolate creek bed to be consumed by animals and insects.

by Anonymousreply 47October 24, 2021 10:42 PM

Datalounge is one of the last strongholds of freedom on the internet. Everything else is run by lunatic hall monitors.

by Anonymousreply 48October 24, 2021 10:51 PM

It is just so insulting and condescending. We are being treated like wayward children in need of training, they ARE training us. It is actually frightening to me.

by Anonymousreply 49October 24, 2021 11:37 PM

TRANSLATION: "Thank God Datalounge allows Fake News trolls and rabid bigotry."

by Anonymousreply 50October 24, 2021 11:40 PM

R50- Exactly! I love it here! 😆 It may be a dysfunctional home but it is our home, damnit!

by Anonymousreply 51October 24, 2021 11:50 PM

There was an incident a few years ago where a woman left her baby in a car for just a second as she ran in to the store, and some lady shouted at her "You forgot your baby!" but the woman got snotty and said it was only for a minute. When she came back out, the lady said she shouldn't leave her baby in a running car unattended, and the woman yelled at her, then apparently went to Reddit to one of those AITA type subs to complain.

Everyone on Reddit was on her side. The entire comments section was "No one ever steals babies, that's an urban legend, cars can't come out of park on accident, no one has ever stolen a running car with a baby in it, if it's not hot outside who cares."

I posted links to two articles about cars being stolen with babies in them and I was not only downvoted in the hundreds but banned from whatever sub it was.

So I have to disagree: I found the experience very similar to Datalounge. If I post a link to a legitimate news article on a trans thread or a political thread, or if I tell Davida or Matt A. or Gap Guy to fuck off, it's likely they'll use sockpuppets to downvote and ban me, just like people do on Reddit.

by Anonymousreply 52October 24, 2021 11:56 PM

[quote]Datalounge is one of the last strongholds of freedom on the internet. Everything else is run by lunatic hall monitors.

Again, if you've ever had Muriel ban you because you gave technical help to someone who asked a question about how the site works, or ever got FFed to hell and back after posting an obviously sarcastic joke that the dummies on here didn't realize was a joke, you wouldn't say that.

Plenty of people on here get banned, just usually not the psychos and trolls. DL is back to letting people game the "automated moderation system" because they're too lazy to actually do any work on this place themselves, and it means people who haven't done anything wrong are censored while the fuck-up Q loons and rightwing trolls get to enjoy this "stronghold of freedom on the internet."

by Anonymousreply 53October 24, 2021 11:59 PM

R50, not quite. I tried to post in the Am I The Asshole Subreddit for ignoring my neighbor when he wanted to pray for me because I’m an atheist.

The post got approved and then locked and removed because it could have been inflammatory. Basically one moderator said it was okay and then another one came along and said it wasn’t.

by Anonymousreply 54October 25, 2021 12:27 AM

Little gods. Validated in their “power”.

by Anonymousreply 55October 25, 2021 1:10 AM

R50's "rabid bigotry" = "anything that disagrees with the required stance(tm) on lunatics being able to dictate to the world and change the meanings of words by quoting made-up statistics, junk science, and threatening suicide".

by Anonymousreply 56October 25, 2021 11:57 AM

R54 that is ridiculous of them to block that topic.

by Anonymousreply 57October 25, 2021 11:59 AM

Reddit is full of common trash

by Anonymousreply 58January 7, 2022 12:58 AM

Reddit is fucking lame. It is just the same damn jokes over and over again. What I really hate is when someone post a song lyric or quote in the comments and everyone else has to chime in. How lame. And, god forbid you see any post about a limbless person; you will see the exact same jokes about “give then a hand” over and over again.

The only time reddit is good is for the very nitch communities such as duggarsnark, but even then sights like “free Jinger” do it better.

by Anonymousreply 59January 7, 2022 1:09 AM

Reddit is such a straight male website. Anytime there is a question about a movie or TV show, it is always the most trashy bro movies people talk about. And, everyday there is some post about how hard it is to be a man. Puh-lease.

by Anonymousreply 60January 7, 2022 1:11 AM

Lol YES OP I know exactly what you mean. The moderators are such bitches - they also flip out if you post something that was discussed in the past month and accuse you of not searching properly. I once got into it with one of them because I had searched and couldn’t find the answer and posted a question in good faith (it was about local IKEAs or something really benign). The moderator said I was lying about searching and then told me not to “piss her off” by arguing.

Incels and fat fraus make Muriel look like a saint.

by Anonymousreply 61January 7, 2022 1:11 AM

R54 I got my AITA post blocked when I posted about how I called someones dog ugly on Grindr when I expressed in my profile that I hate dogs and he proceeded to send me a dog pic.

by Anonymousreply 62January 7, 2022 1:12 AM

I find reddit useful for information and some very light discussions. I don't get too involved, I'm just driving by for info. And I don't care about down votes.

by Anonymousreply 63January 7, 2022 1:19 AM

i'd say i'm a casual user of reddit. i hate it when i see a good thread i'm interested in, and there are 300 comments totally unrelated to the topic as a reply. Maybe i'm too old for reddit. As someone above wrote, there are good niche topics that i like to read.

Datalounge has spoiled me. I sometimes forget when i'm commenting on other sites how bitchy i am, and realize this isn't datalounge.

by Anonymousreply 64January 7, 2022 1:25 AM

[quote]Datalounge has spoiled me. I sometimes forget when i'm commenting on other sites how bitchy i am, and realize this isn't datalounge.

Same! On DL the word "cunt" is thrown around like confetti, but I forget that on other sites using that word makes you worse than Hitler.

by Anonymousreply 65January 7, 2022 1:27 AM

Thing with DL is that if you cross the line - they will give you a 24 hour time out - sort of like a "stand in the corner" move - makes you think to try to be better,

I think that works

Any board/site that bans you for violating T&Cs and then doesn't tell you why is fucking trash. Social media has churned up the trash from the sea bottom and now it's on the surface along with the truth.

by Anonymousreply 69January 7, 2022 7:56 AM

I really only visit the DM Reddit. I do love that talk of Chris Evans gets banned and you're not allowed to speculate on an actor's sexuality 🙄

by Anonymousreply 70January 7, 2022 11:00 AM

I avoid most subreddits, but I'm one of the moderators of a small hobby subreddit (~120 members, almost no activity since we opened a Discord server) and it's okay. I have never had to actually moderate anything because the community is so small and congenial.

Some of the big subreddits are cesspool however.

But I love r/eyebleach, all the pet photos and videos. There have been videos that nearly made me a cry, like the rescue of a dog in a flood, or made me really laugh, like the one with a dog being trained as a support animal that brought Hidden Valley ranch dressing instead of a water bottle out of the frig to her handler.
