Riverside math teacher put on leave after video shows her mimicking Native Americans in faux headdress

The video, which was posted online on Wednesday, shows the teacher in a fake feather headdress, chanting a mnemonic device — “Sohcahtoa,” often used in math courses to remember trigonometric functions — while stomping around the classroom and making chopping motions.

a good intention gone awfully wrong?

Don't know what this has to do with teaching math, but whatever.

by Anonymousreply 1October 22, 2021 11:22 AM

"Sohcahtoa" sounded like a Native American word to the math teacher, who was using the "Sohcahtoa" structure to teach geometry.

We learned "Sohcahtoa" but without any Native American association. And without our teacher pretending to be Native American.

SOA-CAH-TOA: Sine = Opposite over Hypotenuse; Cosine = Adjacent over Hypotenuse; Tangent = Opposite over Adjacent.

Yeah, I remember this from trig also, but doing an Native dance (poorly) had nothing to do with it.

I would have fired her for the choice of the pantalones...before she had the chance to don her faux headress.

by Anonymousreply 10October 22, 2021 11:54 AM

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2021 12:06 PM

I’m more offended by her LuLaRoe leggings. She should be put on leave for teaching in those things.

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2021 12:09 PM

Would this still be seen as racist had the teacher been Black or Hispanic?

by Anonymousreply 16October 22, 2021 12:10 PM

You see? The proponents of ethnomathematicians are right: Math is a racist, imperialistic, white European construct! Never mind that every single culture in the world has contributed to its development... White people are to blame for EVERYTHING!

So, a teacher who resorts to a stupid gimmick in order to ensure that her students perform well in trigonometry, is meant to have her life potentially destroyed for acting like a fool? This isn't ridiculous AT ALL.

by Anonymousreply 17October 22, 2021 12:20 PM

by Anonymousreply 21October 22, 2021 12:57 PM

It is rare that I have any personal knowledge about any topic on DL, but here ya go: teacher had never done this; Newsome just signed law on ethnic studies in CA; teacher used "war whoops," "tomahawk motions," said "How" several times and the tantrum was several minutes long. The students had not observed the behavior before, but it was frightening to them.

My sister is a principal at a high school and you would not believe some of the stories she tells me. She recently had a teacher screaming the N word over and over inside the classroom during a discussion of Huck Finn. Same teacher also started talking about masturbation to the students and several complained about that and the "n" word stunt.

Unfortunately, teachers are protected from being fired for the most part. She will likely be sent to another school as opposed to fired outright. A lot of teachers are mentally unstable and not fit to be teachers.

by Anonymousreply 38October 22, 2021 10:43 PM

Two days ago, they were all about making math more inclusive for minorities, now she gets fired for doing so. Lets just drop math, and stick with a renewal of Ebonics.

by Anonymousreply 39October 22, 2021 10:46 PM

I don’t think she intentionally meant to offend anyone. She was trying to get their interest and help them to remember using this mnemonic device.

What I find disturbing is that students can video teachers and broadcast it online. This isn’t right either, regardless of what she did. Most schools confiscate students’ devices in class for this reason.

The news story at OP's link did indicate that she had done this in the past at that school. For that reason, I can be sympathetic with her. (If no one ever told her to stop doing that idiotic dance.)

I took trig and other advanced math classes and never heard of that method to memorize sine, cosine, etc.

by Anonymousreply 50October 23, 2021 1:04 AM

I feel bad she was so tone deaf that she didn’t realize she was mocking Native American culture as a gimmick to teach kids. It doesn’t seem malicious, but is cringe and wildly inappropriate. Unfortunately school districts will probably fire her to avoid a lawsuit. Sad her career will be over because of this. HS students are so jaded today because of the internet so teachers go to extremes to make interesting and get kids’ attention. But this definitely crossed the line.

Dissenting opinion. My slightly wealthy suburban public schooling employed the entire range of teachers from great to shitty and from very conversation norm core to extremely eccentric and "creative" and liberal.

It was part of your socialization to the world to just deal with all the kinds of people there are, often in authority over you.

I'm not excusing her actions in today's climate - not advisable, not possible - but we are training kids to be outrage factories and take everything way too personally.

After a lesson with an oddball teacher we'd discuss and laugh and mock, and get on with our day.

"I can't believe you recorded me doing this thing that I might be in trouble for! Shame on you for having a camera!"

Be responsible as a teacher then you don't have to worry about a student recording you and putting it online. You are not in a private space.

[quote]We learned "Sohcahtoa" but without any Native American association. And without our teacher pretending to be Native American.

The way the teacher is teaching this is exactly how we learned it in the 00s without the silly dancing.

Our teacher would raise her hand and scream "HOW!" while wearing Native American head gear and we'd have to scream back at her, "SOH-CAH-TOA! SOH-CAH-TOA! SOH-CAH-TOA! SOH-CAH-TOA!"

Another person elsewhere said they learned it when their teacher asked them what do they do when they have an ingrown toenail? Soh-cah-toa/Soak-A-Toe(A).

[quote]Don’t you mean, “Orange County, CA of course,” [R47]?

Unless they mean Riverside County.

by Anonymousreply 128October 23, 2021 9:58 PM

Fuck trig.

by Anonymousreply 129October 23, 2021 10:48 PM

Sines and cosines were invented by the OTHER Indians.

by Anonymousreply 130October 23, 2021 11:10 PM

R107, you’re comparing what Derek Chauvin did to George Floyd with this teacher?! That’s ridiculous. She made a mistake. Okay? You honestly think it’s okay to post videos of teachers in classrooms online without their consent? How would you feel if this was done to you at work? It may be a public school, but there are still privacy laws.

by Anonymousreply 131October 24, 2021 12:45 AM

Filming in class violates the privacy rights of students who are almost all juveniles. Classrooms are not open to the public without permission.

by Anonymousreply 132October 24, 2021 2:00 AM

D-

She's not very flirtatious, and there's nothing wrong with showing a bit of cleavage in class.

by Anonymousreply 133October 24, 2021 2:08 AM

Sandals? Teachers wearing SANDALS??!!

That is a bridge too far.

by Anonymousreply 134October 24, 2021 2:12 AM

Hilarious.

by Anonymousreply 135October 24, 2021 2:16 AM

[quote]I’m more offended by her LuLaRoe leggings. She should be put on leave for teaching in those things.

You know she wore those because they matched her headdress.

by Anonymousreply 136October 24, 2021 2:16 AM

Ridiculous and culturally insensitive I agree... but the students were "frightened"? Puhleez.

by Anonymousreply 137October 24, 2021 2:27 AM

[quote] you’re comparing what Derek Chauvin did to George Floyd with this teacher?! That’s ridiculous.

The point is: stop blaming people recording others for doing bad things instead of blaming the person who did the deed.

Teacher gets caught fighting a student. (I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT STUDENT HAD A CAMERA!) Teacher gets caught grinding on a student. (WOW THEY SHOULD BAN CAMERAS IN THAT SCHOOL!) Teacher gets caught talking to class about her sex life. (WOW, WHY WOULD SOMEONE RECORD HER DOING THAT!) Teacher gets caught going on a racist rant. (WHY DO THE KIDS HAVE PHONES IN CLASS?!?!)

[quote]She made a mistake. Okay?

I agree. I don't think she should lose her job.

[quote]You honestly think it’s okay to post videos of teachers in classrooms online without their consent?

It's not the teacher's classroom you dumbass.

[quote]How would you feel if this was done to you at work?

Many people have worked in environments where there are cameras present. Your time at work is NOT your time. I have worked in places where I've had my hands scanned. I've worked in places where there are cameras watching at all times. I've worked in places where they tie a little tag around your neck and track you from room to room in the building and know exactly where you are at all times.

I was okay with that because I was being paid A LOT and I was always doing what I was supposed to be doing.

[quote]It may be a public school, but there are still privacy laws.

In the state of California you can't record a teacher without their permission UNLESS you are 1) actually a student at said school AND 2.) there's malfeasance involved which is exactly why there haven't been a flurry of lawsuits against students recording teachers behaving badly.

by Anonymousreply 138October 24, 2021 3:55 AM

Mrs. Sochahtoahantas will be glad to know that stupid song has been stuck in my head. Today I was run running errands and started singing it. Lol

by Anonymousreply 139October 24, 2021 3:56 AM

I think this is my Halloween outfit.

by Anonymousreply 140October 24, 2021 8:32 AM

you have to watch WITH SOUND the whole thing, then you will understand. This teacher wanted the students to remember a Math Formula and was using a bogus Native American ritual dance to do this. It sounds like she actually respects Native Americans, though she does not know much about the rich and diverse culture, and also cannot dance. The Teacher was not doing this to offend anyone, purposely.

by Anonymousreply 141October 24, 2021 8:44 AM

R141 Stop defending her. She is not blind. She looked at those leggings and put them on.

by Anonymousreply 142October 24, 2021 9:21 AM

Only the dumbest fucking cunt would think this is a good idea to do this in 2021.

by Anonymousreply 143October 24, 2021 9:29 AM

R138 = longwinded fraucunt

Just shut the fuck up with your ALL CAPS FOR EMPHASIS bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 144October 24, 2021 9:56 AM

I don't know why the Indians, Women, and other savages are so sensitive.

by Anonymousreply 145October 24, 2021 10:09 AM

r143 or in 2012, but the school printed her unique teaching method in the yearbook. She was completely clueless all these years since no one ever told her to stop, actually if you read the yearbook, she was very proud of her teaching , it helped students to remember the math and the school praised her unique way of teaching!

by Anonymousreply 146October 24, 2021 11:58 AM

This woman needs to be a contestant on Project Runway.

by Anonymousreply 147October 24, 2021 1:54 PM

My high school experience took place overseas in S. Korea. It was an American school on an army base, so there were American teachers, but my math teacher happened to be a Korean woman with a pretty typical and thick Korean accent.

I think if she performed this… Dance of the Mnemonic, it would have been epically memorable.

by Anonymousreply 148October 24, 2021 2:25 PM

Oh big deal. She did that stupid primitive dancing from native Americans. So what? You've all done it once in your bedroom as a young hauling. And you secretly loved it.

by Anonymousreply 149October 24, 2021 2:53 PM

*Young gayling

by Anonymousreply 150October 24, 2021 2:53 PM

I think some people think intent excuses everything—as in if I didn’t mean to be disrespectful, then it’s not disrespect. Unfortunately those teachers who most badly need diversity training are usually the ones who never get it—or want it. IMO it should be mandatory for all educators, but now, right wingers will say it’s a liberal agenda and they are being oppressed.

by Anonymousreply 151October 24, 2021 3:04 PM

I find it hilarious. The legging is ugly, the dance is funny and ridiculous, the kids aren't gonna learn their trigo anyway.

I don't give a damn about supposed appropriation or disrespect. I had a good laugh.

by Anonymousreply 152October 24, 2021 3:09 PM

I barely passed algebra so I don’t get any references. I’ve got math allergy. Is trig math?

by Anonymousreply 153October 24, 2021 3:27 PM

Yes, r153. It's basically the study of triangles.

by Anonymousreply 154October 24, 2021 3:30 PM

I learned all I needed to know about triangles by pitting one of my boyfriends against another.

by Anonymousreply 155October 24, 2021 3:45 PM

Marry me, r155!!

by Anonymousreply 156October 24, 2021 3:46 PM

OK, R156. But I'm one of those Mormon types.

by Anonymousreply 157October 24, 2021 3:47 PM

Embarassing, yes. Offensive, no. As an elder millennial, I guess life finally has passed me by. First it started when everything coming out of the radio sounded like shit, then internet speak, then tiktok, and now appropriation. Back in the 90s no one would have given a shit about this.

by Anonymousreply 158October 24, 2021 4:38 PM

^I guess it happens to everyone. Being gay, I suppose I felt extra pressure to conform to the new thing, but now I no longer care to keep up with the times. I rather associate with other like minded people, not especially hard to do if you stick to your peers, and be left alone. I already keep off social media but the trend of filming other people without their knowledge is disturbing to me. I'm not sure all the tech innovations that have come out were a worthy tradeoff.

by Anonymousreply 159October 24, 2021 6:56 PM

It actually reminded me of one of those Maori battle dances.

I think so, too. (Not "everything," but I get your point.) It's almost harder to deal with casual, ingrained stuff.

by Anonymousreply 161October 24, 2021 7:03 PM

R161 It doesn't excuse everything. If their intent was to do no harm, then they can be taught to change their behavior. You don't fire them or try to destroy them on social media.

by Anonymousreply 162October 24, 2021 7:14 PM

Anyone who was offended by this needs to sit down and think real hard about what they are doing with their life. Not everything revolves around you and your feelings.

by Anonymousreply 163October 24, 2021 8:38 PM

But can she do the Hokey Pokey?

by Anonymousreply 164October 24, 2021 8:40 PM

R164 - That is offensive to both Hokey and the Pokey Nations. Now go turn yourself around.

by Anonymousreply 165October 24, 2021 8:46 PM

She was imitating Lucy singing Pass That Peace Pipe in a salute to Native Americans.

by Anonymousreply 166October 24, 2021 11:11 PM

Yes I think people need to have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. Being crucified online for a mistake and destroying someone and their career/livelihood is not a fair resolution.

by Anonymousreply 167October 25, 2021 2:41 AM

R165 That's what it's all about.

by Anonymousreply 168October 25, 2021 12:16 PM

[quote] I simply don’t understand how, in today’s climate, people aren’t hyper sensitive and vigilant to these kinds of transgressions, especially with all the cameras around.

I simply don’t understand how, in today’s climate, people are so hyper sensitive and vigilant to these kinds of perceived transgressions so they can be “outraged” over nothing, especially with all the cameras around.

Some people sniff around all day for something, anything to offend them.

by Anonymousreply 169October 25, 2021 1:31 PM

[quote] She is not blind. She looked at those leggings and put them on.

😂😂😂

by Anonymousreply 170October 25, 2021 1:31 PM

R154 That's it? How did they make triangles so difficult?

by Anonymousreply 171October 25, 2021 2:01 PM

R169 You call that nothing? Did you see them from the back?

by Anonymousreply 172October 25, 2021 2:04 PM

She probably wore them specifically because they looked like something an “injun” would wear.

by Anonymousreply 173October 25, 2021 2:37 PM

[quote]I would have fucking loved a wild frau teacher like this as a kid

I despised teachers trying to appear cool.

I would have ignored her and worked ahead in the text book.

by Anonymousreply 174October 25, 2021 3:00 PM

Her shoes and pants are worse than the dance

by Anonymousreply 175October 25, 2021 5:11 PM

by Anonymousreply 178October 26, 2021 5:35 AM

Moron.

by Anonymousreply 179October 26, 2021 2:48 PM

If she thinks this is good idea to do something like this in 2021, she is too stupid to be allowed near children, who record everything. It's just BEGGING FOR TROUBLE. She doesn't have any common sense and her stupidity could get the school sued

She's just a dumb bitch

by Anonymousreply 180October 26, 2021 8:53 PM

I love this bitch. It's performance art. If she did this to Flamenco I wouldn't be offended and I'm a Spaniard.

by Anonymousreply 181October 26, 2021 11:17 PM

R178, good point. Our universe is probably a Riemannian manifold.

by Anonymousreply 182October 27, 2021 4:30 AM

She's just trying to help students remember that the squaw root of the two sides of the triangle is equal to the squaw root of the third.

by Anonymousreply 183October 27, 2021 5:21 AM

this is something that teachers are taught. This is a common lesson plan. She did not mean to offend anyone. And the student who said this was violence, is LYING.

by Anonymousreply 184October 27, 2021 6:12 AM

Go watch the entire video. She runs around the classroom, stands on the desk, and starts screaming. It was way inappropriate!

If she were to dance for only a few seconds, that could be questionable. But, as I said above, she danced and ran around the room wearing a hand-made head dress for a full five minutes. That is definitely inappropriate.

by Anonymousreply 185October 27, 2021 1:54 PM

[quote]If she were to dance for only a few seconds, that could be questionable. But, as I said above, she danced and ran around the room wearing a hand-made head dress for a full five minutes. That is definitely inappropriate.

She wasn't getting the reaction she desired, so she dug in and really gave it her all. She is flummoxed as to why she isn't the "cool teacher" anymore...like 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 186October 27, 2021 8:49 PM

She's a dedicated ARTISTE.

Why would she ever do this? even if you weren’t particularly woke it’s dumb as hell and just asking for trouble.

by Anonymousreply 189October 29, 2021 3:28 AM

My high school teachers were for the most part a bunch of assholes but even they never pulled shit like this. And it was the late 90s when nobody would have cared.
