The Phenix City Story is a very good movie but were you aware of the punchline?
[quote] John Patterson (Richard Kiley) is depicted as supportive of African-American Zeke Ward (James Edwards) and his family. In real life, following his term as Alabama attorney general (1954-58), Patterson ran for governor in 1958 in an openly racist campaign and won. One of his opponents, George Wallace, had run as a racial moderate and told his friends after the election, "John Patterson out-niggered me, and I'm never gonna be out-niggered again." Four years later, in 1962, Wallace won the governorship of Alabama as an avowed segregationist.

I have another contender, Mitchell, Oregon. Last month, we met up there with vaccinated family at a rental cottage. It's near the John Day Fossil Beds and The Painted Hills. Streets filled with unmasked townies and tourists . Then upon approaching the rental, we saw fire fighters and two smoldering, burned out residences. When we asked about it,(and the smell of smoke) the cottage owner calmly stated that it was a revenge suicide that occurred hours before. "It's the country. These things happen" she said.

One town that recently held this title was Braddock, PA, a former steel town near Pittsburgh that was in such a ruinous state that they filmed the post apocalyptic movie The Road there as what the world would look like after complete collapse. But an unorthodox brilliant young man got elected mayor and began to transform the town and bring international interest in reviving it. Heās gone on to become Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania and it all goes well will make his way to Washington as the next senator from Pennsylvania. If this town can be pulled from the ashes of hell, thereās hope for just about any other town to turn it around.

Waterloo, Iowa. From personal experience
I traveled there frequently for work, staying in a hotel that looked like it was a renovated country jail: there were 3 watchtower columns, one with an elevator, and the others were stairwells. One time I was there, the entire NW side of the building was covered in spidersā webs, a la āCharlotteās Webā⦠all waiting for the wknd to carry the baby spiders away.
The hotelās surrounding blocks were all tattoo parlors (that should deserve a DL collective groan alone) and vape shops. ONE (1!) pizza parlor and ONE (1!) sports bar.
After each visit there I had an obsessive compulsion to check my immunization record and ensure I didnāt need a tetanus or yellow fever booster.

Say what you want about EspaƱola, NM but all that crime makes for a whole lot of criminals awaiting rehabilitation through work release programs.
I once attended a wedding in EspaƱola at a very nice and quaint venue. During the cocktail hour my girlfriends and I started admiring the eye candy and noticed most of it was the waitstaff. I remember really enjoying this as I was freshly out of the closet and it was quite fun being gay in front of my friends.
Once dinner started, we each had our pick of the waiters who we thought were flirting with us. It wasnāt until after the cake was cut we were told the waiters were all there as part of a work release program from prison.
I still tease my gfs that my guy was flirting with me because after jail, he was really gay. Whereas theirs were just flirting with them because they were tired of being cagemeat.

There's an enormous rate of genetic diseases and maladies among the children due to inbreeding and I recall reading that the area has the highest concentration of "socialism" recipients (e.g. Medicaid, AFDC, SSI, WIC, etc) in the state. Without contributing anything to the economy.
When the town elected a female mayor one of the cult leaders declared he'd never take direction from a woman.

I'd never heard of Norco, r131, and I'm CA born and bred (up north). This raised an eyebrow.
[Quote]The census reported that 22,666 people (83.8% of the population) lived in households, 75 (0.3%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 4,322 (16.0%) were institutionalized.
You forgot to mention the prison.
What a weird town. About 20% of the population is employed by the school district? One industry is full of brainiacs paid well by the Federal government and the other is a State of California prison which excluding professional staff hires so-intelligent-people (i.e. prison guards).
[Quote]According to the City of Norco, the major area employers are the Corona-Norco Unified School District with 5,216 employees, California Rehabilitation Center with 1,146 employees, and Naval Surface Warfare Center with 1,010 employees.[28]
For a shithole town, in an area most of us wouldn't want to live, all I can say is WOW!!! We need a Tasteful Friends, Norco Edition.
[Quote]According to the 2010 United States Census, Norco had a median household income of $82,074

Cairo, Ililnois does sound like a hell hole. It's claim to fame was a lynching of a black man named Will James.
In response, the crowd jeered: āWe donāt want to hear him; string him up; kill him; burn him.ā James was hanged from an arch at 8:00 pm. However, when the rope broke, James was riddled with bullets. The body was then dragged by a rope for a mile to the scene of the crime and burned in the presence of at least 10,000 people. Many women were in the crowd, some of whom helped to hang and drag the body. His remains were then cut up for souvenirs before burning the rest. His half-burned head was then attached atop a pole in Candee Park at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Elm Street. The next morning, nothing was left of his body other than bones

R135, I've been here 6 years and have yet to see a ghost or anything paranormal. I've been in the Goldfield Hotel several times, even in the room where the girl was supposedly chained up and left to die; been inside the old high school, supposedly haunted by kids, been in the cemetery, been in the Mizpah Hotel and stayed at the Clown Motel, both in Tonopah; been everywhere around here that's supposed to be haunted and have seen nothing. Even my property which was a machine shop before the fires of the 1920s has nothing, except I dig up old bolts and things in the yard from time to time. I'm disappointed, as the town really doesn't live up to the ghost legend. However half the people who live here now are far scarier than any ghost.

It's not the jewel of the Coachella Valley by any stretch, but it's also not anywhere near the rot of Cairo, Illinois and some of the other horrific shitholes mentioned in this thread.

MTG became a congresswoman because no one really exposed her during the primary, they waited until the general. And, she didn't really let her freak flag fly until well into the general. Once she won the primary she was guaranteed to win. Her district included the only areas of Georgia that continued to elect Republicans even during the Jim Crow era "Solid Democrat South." The mountain people were mostly anti-slavery Unionists during the Civil War which makes it ironic that she now represents them. But, generations of them have grown up to vote GOP reflexively, just as minorities have grown to vote that way for the Democrats over the last 50 or so years.
But, I don't think those voters would have chosen her in the primary, if there had been more critical coverage of her early on. Then the Democrat withdrew from the race before the general, though his name remained on the ballot and he did get 25% of the vote.
She has already attracted at least one GOP primary challenger and I suspect a few more will join. When it comes to local party politics, yeah they like having an "iconic" congressperson but not one that was removed from all committees and has no power to bring home the pork.

Dunn, NC. At the almost exact mid-point of I-95 between NY and Miami. TONS of drug dealers, many of them "scions" of the town. Another fun fact- BLM stormed the statue of General Lee in the town and protested for at least 2 days. They didn't realize until someone from the local news informed them they had the wrong General Lee. Dunn's homage is for the father of the 82nd airborne. That did great things for BLM's rep in that area, lol.

r68 Fort Dodge Iowa. I lived in Ames Iowa for awhile for graduate school. Our son had a soccer game in Fort Dodge. It was a tournament so we were there for two days . Holy shit. Iowa is mostly nice, but something was off. We went to a bufffet steakhouse type of place to eat, and every single diner was on Oxygen, and smelled like tobacco. There was only meat based slop and mac and cheese. David Lynch horrorscape. We still talk about it. I think maybe it's a military base or something, and has that energy/karma going for it. Not sure. but fuck that place. People were nice. Depressed and grey, but nice.

Slidell, Louisiana Very much the sad bedroom community everyone regrets living in. Traffic everywhere, main boulevards are a nightmare. Terrible drivers. The regional cancer center is the busiest place in town. Currently having a huge population turnaroundā it is a white flight hotspot. Reeks of pot everywhere and loud, obnoxious rap music leaks from expensive debt-ridden autos that are obviously way above their means. The locals call it New Orleans East-East, because of the escalating crime. I live on the outskirts of S-town, and honestly, itās even getting bad here. The combination of crime and Trumpism is making this place uninhabitable for me.
The only thrill frau Slidellians have, is getting drunk in Olde Town. This is not the city I grew up in, it has become dystopic to me in my adult years. Iāve only been to New Orleans a certain amount of times, even though I was born there, and my family originating from NOLA. This is a bad place to live.
