"I have been fired from the Villa di Roma."

This is why I love Philly - from a review of an Italian Market restaurant:

"My husband likes veal piccata there, I range from chicken neapolitan or sicilian to tuna steak with arrabiata sauce......they do make a good thick tomato 'gravy' ! but beware of the foibles of Pipi the owner/host ! if you should be dissatisfied with your order, you are chastised publicly. I ordered tuna RARE, always have, and always will, but I was unlucky this time. We had waited for over 1/2 hour for our entree and it must have been sitting in the kitchen, continuing to cook. The tuna arrived MEDIUM and when I voiced my disappointment with that, I was told that this was considered RARE by them. I was openly, with loud voice, asked to not come back, because they couldn't fix me another piece of tuna, as there was none left, told me there was nothing already ready to serve me and to vamoose since we are too picky, wanting tuna rare and veal thin and lemony. Pipi told us, WE HAD CHANGED in our attitude, and the cooks were fine and the waitresses on the ball. Well, Pipi, go and eat your Italian food. We'll take out money somewhere else."

I love when Karen is banned from coming back to a business.

by Anonymousreply 1October 22, 2021 12:04 AM

Pipi was just out of tuna and patience.

by Anonymousreply 2October 22, 2021 12:04 AM

Philadelphia is the worst city in the world. Vulgar, ugly people.

by Anonymousreply 3October 22, 2021 12:05 AM

R3 You have never been to Trenton, apparently.

by Anonymousreply 4October 22, 2021 12:07 AM

[quote]I was openly, with loud voice, asked to not come back,

More businesses need to adopt this practice...

by Anonymousreply 5October 22, 2021 12:08 AM

[R3] You have never been to Trenton, apparently.

I went to Princeton, so yes I have been to Trenton.

by Anonymousreply 6October 22, 2021 12:09 AM

Oh god. Princeton! Real people, R3? Fuck Princeton, fuck you, and fuck the fuck that made you.

by Anonymousreply 7October 22, 2021 12:10 AM

Right. The only real people are the nasty cunts in Philly. Fuck YOU, thank you very much.

by Anonymousreply 8October 22, 2021 12:13 AM

Karens order their tuna canned.

So this must be a Sheila.

I called the restaurant and talked to Pip Deluca. He wouldn't give her name but said that she was a crazy woman who kept shaking her finger at him and fumbling to get her cell phone out. The husband was mortified.

MAYBE there was a touch of "Soup Nazi," but my feeling is that if you are at a place called Villa Di Roma you should not order tuna or you should order it raw and expect it medium-well.

by Anonymousreply 9October 22, 2021 12:15 AM

Team Pipi here.

by Anonymousreply 10October 22, 2021 12:16 AM

"I didn't just cry, I wailed"

by Anonymousreply 11October 22, 2021 12:16 AM

Pipi Longnofucksgiven!

by Anonymousreply 12October 22, 2021 12:24 AM

It’s not polite to tell other people to their face that that you don’t like their cooking. She should have just done the bad review and resolved on her own without being told that she shouldn’t go back.

by Anonymousreply 13October 22, 2021 12:26 AM

I just keep picturing a little girl with red braids sticking out of her head wearing a chef's hat coming out and yelling at the customers in Italian while waving her arms. Mr. Nilsson her monkey pal is on her shoulder.

by Anonymousreply 14October 22, 2021 12:29 AM

Exactly R13. Not only is it kind of rude, but it really just is a power trip.

This is not a cockroach in the salad situation. I like my meat rare too, but would I send it back? No. I would just not come back.

by Anonymousreply 15October 22, 2021 12:34 AM

Same reason I love Philly. People don’t kiss ass for money. Unlike NYC or DC, it’s not all about money and politics. Surly, sometimes rude - but real and unpretentious,

by Anonymousreply 16October 22, 2021 12:47 AM

[quote]Philadelphia is the worst city in the world. Vulgar, ugly people.

Try Camden if you want to see lots of vulgar, ugly people. Violent too.

by Anonymousreply 17October 22, 2021 12:54 AM

The Foibles of Pipi sounds like my new favorite show! Where is it streaming? Who’s in it?

by Anonymousreply 18October 22, 2021 1:41 AM

This wasn't her only review. she had about 60 others. Mostly all bad reviews. Even in her 5 star reviews, she managed to complain about something. And lots of backwards complements

Like, very good for a place that looks like a tourist trap

Surprised by excellence in small town (she lives in Delaware and says shit like this)

by Anonymousreply 19October 22, 2021 1:43 AM

She did write on nice review and the manager replied back

Dear troglodytes,

What a lovely review, thank you! You have described The Ivy so beautifully and it is a true pleasure to share your comments with the team. We love nothing more than surprising guests with a hotel experience unlike any other and hope to encourage total relaxation by anticipating each and every need. We will look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Yelpers are usually obnoxious and miserable cunts.

by Anonymousreply 23October 22, 2021 3:55 AM

R15, this happened to me last night. My steak was NOT medium rare. It was medium well. I ate it anyway and decided not to come back. If a steakhouse can’t get it right, they don’t get my money again. The cocktail was weak, too. The service was good, though.

by Anonymousreply 24October 22, 2021 4:03 AM

People need to get over themselves. People use Yelp to bully businesses online. This is why no one wants these jobs - waiting on miserable assholes looking to be angry or dissatisfied is mentally draining and demoralizing, especially when your salary and work performance can be undermined by one shitty person with a vendetta. Old cunt.

Who serves tuna without prunes?

by Anonymousreply 28October 22, 2021 6:05 AM

Agree. What kind of idiot complains about something so trivial in this climate of extreme labor shortages? Restaurants are really struggling. She's lucky she got served at all.

by Anonymousreply 29October 22, 2021 6:41 AM

she complains about everything

by Anonymousreply 30October 22, 2021 5:34 PM

Here's another time she got kicked out of a restaurant. This restaurant has excellent reviews. The best of all the restaurants in their town

The Corner Cafe ! Caveat Emptor ! No soup for you today!

Many folks ruminate with the clueless when the Auto Train rolls into Sanford with a 4 hour delay, wondering where to get a bite to eat before traveling on to their destination. But I can give you good personal advice.

The closest area is the Sanford Historical Section. You make a left and then a right upon leaving the Amtrak compound, cross the main drag and you are on 1st Street. There are many places to eat there. Christo’s, at 107 W 1st Street, comes to mind as most friendly and serving very good food. Right next to it is a place, called Corner Cafe, that flies the Trip Advisor flag, but don’t let THAT fool you one little bit. Best you read all the negative reviews ASAP, before daring to enter, because it could happen to you ! Strangely, there are also many positive reviews, but to a person who has endured the attempted indignities by this owner, I am amazed. My husband and I belong to the elderly, we are in the mid 80’s and slightly fragile, and we inadvertently did not follow the un-posted rigid rules and regulations immediately and obediently like a kicked dog.

We were shouted at, when entering. I took the liberty of sitting before the order was going to be placed with el jefe, when a young server took pity on me, as the place was mostly empty, and he seated us in a booth, WITHOUT the head honcho’s approval and the young man then took our order. But, before you could say Jack Robinson, we had the drinking glasses ( H2o from faucet at $ 2.50, and iced tea ) ripped out of my hand and off the table, and we were informed YOU WILL NOT BE SERVED HERE TO DAY and were asked to leave. We were flabbergasted to say the least, and so were the people at the next table, whose review has already been printed. But all was not lost and the sky did not fall. We had a very tasty lunch next door at Christo’s and we told our sad story. No amount of discourtesy and rudeness can humiliate me, it identifies the person who renders it. Illegitimi non carborundum

R25 " looking to be angry or dissatisfied". That sums it up. A lot of these people are primed for something to be wrong somehow. I served for years and I remember those hateful creeps all too well. We need a cultural change in terms of how service workers are treated, not just the promise of a raise ( though of course money matters too).

by Anonymousreply 32October 22, 2021 8:45 PM

If someone complains to the manager or owner for anything, she should have a plate of spaghetti dumped on her head.

by Anonymousreply 33October 22, 2021 9:03 PM

I went to college in Philadelphia. My mom would come visit and take me to the Italian Market sometimes. There was this cheese she bought that was so tasty but really stinky. A hard cheese. I remember taking some back to my dorm room and eating it, but the paper it had been wrapped in smelled so bad I didn't want to keep it in my room, so I threw it out in the hallway garbage can. All evening people were complaining about the smell in the hallway, but no one ever knew what it was.

Does anyone know what kind of cheese this was?

by Anonymousreply 34October 22, 2021 9:11 PM

What the fuck is on that plate? Looks like someone has taken a dump on it.

Looks as appetising as diarrhea.

by Anonymousreply 35October 22, 2021 9:18 PM

When I was a little kid I wouldn’t even go into the town Italian market because of the smell of cheese in there. It made me prejudiced about Italians. I thought they must be dirty & insane to want to eat whatever the hell that was ……smelled like vomit & dirty feet.

by Anonymousreply 36October 22, 2021 10:32 PM

Taleggio, r34?

by Anonymousreply 37October 22, 2021 10:34 PM

The Foibles of Pipi

LISA'S MUDDER COMES FOR A VISIT (S5, EP1) Lisa's mother surprises her and "Whatshisname" (Pipi) with a three week visit. She just became a countess--the title came with an estate she bought--but Pipi tells everyone she's the Queen of Sicily. In her royal honor, the locals hold a Ceremonial Day complete with a solid gold wooden key to the city. The highlight is a 21-gun-salute using just one cannon and three balls.

Don’t miss it!

by Anonymousreply 38October 23, 2021 4:29 AM

R37 I just looked up taleggio. I think this was harder than that, like a really stinky and tasty parmesan.

by Anonymousreply 39October 23, 2021 5:44 AM

There's only one parmesan, r39, and it is called Parmigiano-Reggiano. It does have a distinctive smell, but you find it "really stinky," you must have a very sensitive nose. But don't despair. Pecorino is a harder cheese than Taleggio, and its smell is not one of my favorite things in the world. Someone might serve it in place of Parmigiano-Reggiano as a grating cheese.

by Anonymousreply 40October 23, 2021 5:50 PM

R40, this was considered stinky to everyone who walked through that hallway. It was objectively stinky.

Pecorino? Maybe. I can't tell online if it is a fairly hard cheese. It was harder than cheddar (the stinky cheese). I hate to think of it being made with maggots or bugs.

by Anonymousreply 41October 23, 2021 6:32 PM

Team pipi! Escort that nasty yelp bitch out.

by Anonymousreply 42October 23, 2021 6:41 PM

R34

Imported Pecorino-Romano, or more likely, Imported Provolone.

Don't buy Domestic Italian Cheeses; they're not the same thing as the Imported. Huge difference. HUGE.

by Anonymousreply 43October 23, 2021 6:57 PM

Neither review posted here seems to have a reason to kick her out. I don't know why people are talking about customers hitting employees, when this lady did nothing of the sort, she's in her 80s and would you even feel it if she hit you? She just complained that the tuna was cooked improperly, and in the second restaurant was seated by someone who didn't inform the host.

People are acting like she's a 40-something Karen who was throwing barrels at the employees and shitting on the tables.

by Anonymousreply 44October 23, 2021 7:04 PM

An Italian restaurant? I’m not surprised…a surly breed they are…

by Anonymousreply 45October 23, 2021 7:27 PM

When an Italian cooks for you, they are always right. End of story. You fuck with the cook and 💦 goes in your food.

by Anonymousreply 46October 23, 2021 7:49 PM

If you want your food prepared exactly as you want it and you are a finicky eater, stay home and cook it yourself.

by Anonymousreply 47October 24, 2021 4:00 AM

R44, you're taking her accounts at face value in her own reviews written to trash the business? How kind of you. It's obvious from her tone alone that there was more to the events than she's admitting.

by Anonymousreply 48October 24, 2021 9:27 AM

I've never been to Philly but the worst person I've ever met is from there.

by Anonymousreply 49October 24, 2021 9:33 AM

Why the Princeton hatred? I've encountered it myself and don't get it. I won't even wear my Princeton cap on the subway now.

by Anonymousreply 50October 24, 2021 9:47 AM

I went through all her reviews r48 and they didn't seem overly critical. Lots of positive reviews and what she said about "Wicked" and traveling business class should make her a DL icon.

Given we have trolls on DL who find random, unimportant people to post about, and that there are always DLers replying with exaggerations and outright lies about what was said just so they can have an excuse to bitch, I'm not inclined to take anyone's word here at face value. I looked for myself, and she's fine. She's actually a charming 80-something woman who hasn't even posted a review in two years, which makes me wonder how OP even found her in the first place, and if she's able to travel or eat out anymore.

by Anonymousreply 51October 24, 2021 10:05 AM

[quote] People are acting like she's a 40-something Karen

Karens exist in all adult age groups and all of them should be treated with contempt.

by Anonymousreply 52October 24, 2021 10:20 AM

[quote] who was throwing barrels at the employees and shitting on the tables

Did Karen do these things in this exact order?

by Anonymousreply 53October 24, 2021 12:50 PM

People from or near Philly should not be surprised at getting tossed from a restaurant for a minor complaint. That’s just how Philly is. I can’t imagine why anyone would choose “troglodyte” as a username.

by Anonymousreply 54October 24, 2021 12:56 PM

I read her reviews and you can tell by the tone that she goes in with an attitude where she’s prepared to be dissatisfied, and compliments are backhanded (as someone described above), or expressed in a way that belies surprise given some other negative.

There are a lot of people out there that actually enjoy it when the world or others don’t meet their expectations. They move through the world with zero graciousness or humility, and their lives are one big exasperated sigh of disappointment. They are miserable people and don’t know how to enjoy anything or be happy.

I’ve eaten at that restaurant. It’s charming in a Scorsese “The Irishman” sort of way. Food is meh though. Very basic 1970s banquet hall style.

by Anonymousreply 57October 24, 2021 4:02 PM

R51, Here is her review of Wicked. She gave it 1 star

Money not well spent

I made the big mistake of listening to people and their hype about 'Wicked'. It was wicked alright...wickedly bad. We had great seats, and spent beaucoup $ for them. There was nothing to hear but loud noise and idiotic dancing to see. It was stupid, with a stupid 'plot' if you want to call it that...pretty blond nasty girl should get guy, no matter what, and eventually become the wonderful witch, and ugly green but nice girl, will become the mean wicked witch of the west...discrimination in the highest order here and surprisingly it passed to-day's sensitive muster ....At least that is what I got out of it, until the intermission, because that is when we split...... There were no catchy tunes. There was nothing but auditory irritation....This is not at all for children..........

Villa di Roma is known as classic old school red sauce place - and it is. In the age of Vetri, it is mediocre to bad - but exactly the kind of place I like in Philly. Unpretentious, comfortable, affordable and decent.

Wrens are troglodytes in Europe. I think they’re called something different in America.

The Eurasian wren is Troglodytes Troglodytes.

For an 80 year old gal, she gets around.

Good for her.

by Anonymousreply 62October 25, 2021 5:51 AM

She’s giving me Kelly Bishop in Gilmore Girls vibes:

“Going over, the crew was generally nasty. The baggage compartment seems higher each time for an elderly person and I could not lift my carry-on up into it and left it standing by my seat waiting for a generous person, which usually happens. An elderly corpulent male flight attendant informed me in a rude manner that I had to stow it away up there. As I couldn't do it, I ignored him.”

by Anonymousreply 63October 25, 2021 6:56 AM

She’ll probably come to her own funeral as a ghost to rate it:

“It was a nice ceremony, although the flowers people sent/brought could have been larger/nicer if people weren’t so cheap and had planned ahead. I loved that my sister Edna and her husband showed up, but that cheap suit he’s been wearing for forty years needs a burial as well. General sadness and mourning left a lot to be desired, and the casket and burial service were only adequate given the fortune they charged me. Color me disappointed.”
