“Videodrome” (1983)
Anyone else like this movie? It stars James Woods (this was years before he went batshit, no need to point it out) and Debbie Harry.
I hadn’t seen it in years before tonight, and it holds up beautifully. It’s a very good “horror” film that is saying something more. It also is creative and still feels different than most films in the genre. It has a great screenplay and script, and does a terrific job at building a strong, dark atmosphere.
Also, James Woods ass looked hot in this and Debbie Harry looked beautiful. She was a huge rock star! Why did Madonna act like she was unique for being a pop star who showed tits? Debbie did it first.

I saw it recently for the first time and loved it. Bears an affinity to Brian De Palma's Body Double (1984) in tackling the way in which television has warped our senses.

I liked SCANNERS (1981), also from Cronenberg.

It was cut to shit before release. Would love to see a reconstruction of his original cut.

It was filmed in late 1981, not released in many places until late 1983 or 1984.
Debbie Harry was taken aback when she got to the UK to promote it, before she arrived, it had been debated in Parliament over whether it was a film that should be banned. She never really got another co-lead like Nikki again.

She looked absolutely beautiful in this r10.
She was a pop/rock star. No matter what no one was gonna be offering her top films.

R9 The script was more detailed, and made the motives of the characters more clear. Cronenberg wanted more of a 'mood' feeling to the finished project, especially the ending so he kept things ambiguous.

Some of the original ideas sounded wild!

Harry was wonderful, but it was unclear whether her character actually existed by the time the film concluded.
I can't stand Woods, even overlooking his personal vileness, but he was effective in this as I recall.

r16 we find out that she was murdered

R17, but doesn't she appear onscreen at the last sequence, having been disguised as her own murderer?
I couldn't tell if she was supposed to have dissolved into the alternate world of the television show.
