Michael Caine’s soon to be dead friend

in his new interview in the guardian he says the following:
And I have another very close friend who is very, very ill. If he survives until next weekend I’ll be surprised. And I won’t mention his name, but you’ll read about him in the papers.

Who could he be talking about? I’m guessing another actor but I suppose it could be a society figure.

Bill Clinton?

by Anonymousreply 1October 19, 2021 6:02 AM

I was thinking perhaps Jack Nicholson. No idea if they’re close friends but they worked together.

by Anonymousreply 2October 19, 2021 6:04 AM

Morgan Freeman

by Anonymousreply 3October 19, 2021 6:09 AM

Dame Edna

by Anonymousreply 4October 19, 2021 6:12 AM

I've had a hunch Jack Nicholson will be the "big" death of 2021 for a couple of months. He hasn't been seen in years.

by Anonymousreply 5October 19, 2021 6:12 AM

Ward Bond.

by Anonymousreply 6October 19, 2021 6:27 AM

My first thought was Nicholson.

by Anonymousreply 7October 19, 2021 6:28 AM

Damn if it’s Nicholson. It just feels weird when iconic, larger than life actors on that level dies.

by Anonymousreply 8October 19, 2021 6:34 AM

Caine is getting up there at 88. I know it’s apart of life but damn.

by Anonymousreply 9October 19, 2021 6:36 AM

Nah, it's going to be a Brit.

by Anonymousreply 10October 19, 2021 6:37 AM

What old Brit actors are there still alive that he didn't mention in the article? Not Hopkins because he's signed onto some new projects.

by Anonymousreply 11October 19, 2021 6:43 AM

I thought it might be Terence Stamp (they were roommates in the 60s), but Stamp says they haven't talked in 40 years.

by Anonymousreply 12October 19, 2021 6:45 AM

Didn’t he work together with Anthony Hopkins?

by Anonymousreply 13October 19, 2021 6:46 AM

Any actor from a Bridge Too Far.

by Anonymousreply 14October 19, 2021 6:47 AM

R13 I thought Hopkins too but he's filming a movie with Anne Hathaway right now so not him.

by Anonymousreply 15October 19, 2021 6:49 AM

Sad last days !

by Anonymousreply 16October 19, 2021 6:53 AM

Possibly Johnny Gold. He died on October 7. Perhaps Sir Michael was interviewed for the article earlier in the month.

Nicholson has been been rumored to be suffering from increasingly bad dementia for a number of years now.

by Anonymousreply 22October 19, 2021 7:40 AM

I thought maybe Jessica Simpson at first, but now i'm thinking Jewel.

by Anonymousreply 23October 19, 2021 8:08 AM
Damn if it’s Nicholson. It just feels weird when iconic, larger than life actors on that level dies.

I'm always curious by that reaction. I could barely offer up a "Huh, you don't say" over dead celebrities, and the greater their fame the less the reaction. Someone like Linda Manz who portrayed the young girl with the odd voice in "Days of Heaven" in 1978 made more of an impression for me more because I thought of how she was such an important aspect of how people recall that film, and that that was her one great role. Jack Nicholson, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger..."Huh, you don't say."

by Anonymousreply 26October 19, 2021 8:12 AM

Yeah, I’d say Jack too. It’s about time for the Dementia to run its course.

by Anonymousreply 27October 19, 2021 10:29 AM

I don’t think it’s Nicholson. He was out golfing in March 2020 with a bunch of other celebs.

by Anonymousreply 28October 19, 2021 11:08 AM

Huh. He voted for BREXIT.

by Anonymousreply 29October 19, 2021 11:08 AM

Sir Antony Sher is terminally ill.

by Anonymousreply 30October 19, 2021 11:35 AM

He’s probably not the person Caine refers to, but how is Jeff Bridges doing?

by Anonymousreply 31October 19, 2021 11:47 AM

I'm pretty sure person in question is British. And not necessarily an actor? Could be someone whose death may make the British papers but not big news in the US.

by Anonymousreply 32October 19, 2021 11:50 AM
Sir Antony Sher is terminally ill.

by Anonymousreply 33October 19, 2021 11:55 AM

R32 is right, I can't believe it took 32 comments for someone to say it. Here is the full quote:
What he misses, if anything, are the people, not the films. The films are there on his iPad any time he wants to watch them. But his mates have absconded; they’ve made their getaways, too. “My generation is going. All my friends are dying off. Because we all got so old. Roger Moore, Sean Connery – those are two of my closest friends who went. Then a couple of days ago, Johnny Gold, who owned Tramp, the discotheque in London. And I have another very close friend who is very, very ill. If he survives until next weekend I’ll be surprised. And I won’t mention his name, but you’ll read about him in the papers.”

In the event that he isn't talking about Antony Sher, is he friends with John Cleese? He's still in good health, isn't he?

by Anonymousreply 39October 19, 2021 11:00 PM

Obviously Patricia Quinn.

by Anonymousreply 40October 19, 2021 11:47 PM

John Cleese is fine, as far as I know, R39. Billy Connolly's on his last legs but I don't know if he's a particular friend of Caine's.

by Anonymousreply 41October 19, 2021 11:56 PM

It must have been Leslie Bricusse but I guess there's no prize now.

by Anonymousreply 42October 20, 2021 12:13 AM

Wow, R42. I just found this quote in a 2010 Telegraph interview:
When I ask if he finds it hard to forge friendships with what Liz Hurley calls ‘civilians’, there is a pause before he answers. ‘My closest friends are Roger Moore, who is an actor, Sean Connery, who is an actor, Terry O’Neill, who is a photographer, Johnny Gold, who was the boss of Tramp, and [bold]Leslie Bricusse[/bold], who is a composer. Come to think of it, I don’t meet other people often enough to become friends with them. I don’t meet stockbrokers, or carpenters, or coal miners, I spend all day with actors, composers and photographers.’

How sad, they're all gone.

by Anonymousreply 68October 20, 2021 10:22 PM

by Anonymousreply 69October 20, 2021 10:22 PM

It's Roger Moore.

Caine forgot he died four years ago.

Again.

by Anonymousreply 70October 20, 2021 10:24 PM

In the past he has listed his his four best friends as Roger Moore, dead in 2017, actor Terry O'Neill, who died November 2019; Connery, who died Halloween, 2020; Johnny Gold (owned the club Tramp,) who died 10/8/21; and Leslie Bricusse, who died yesterday at 90, 10/19/21.

He was talking about Bricusse, while still smarting about Gold.

by Anonymousreply 71October 20, 2021 10:34 PM

Caine's close friend was the photographer (and much-loathed ex-husband of Miss Dunaway) Terry O'Neill, not the actor of the same name.

by Anonymousreply 75October 21, 2021 5:03 AM

He's friends with Murdoch. He and Shakira "double-date" out to dinner in London with Rupert and Jerry.

by Anonymousreply 76October 21, 2021 5:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 77October 21, 2021 5:13 AM

by Anonymousreply 83October 21, 2021 6:06 AM

i would love to hang out with him, I bet he has millions of interesting stories

by Anonymousreply 84October 21, 2021 6:14 AM

R79/r80 etc and in case anyone was wondering how this guy was doing , Dustin Hoffman was spotted at the opening season Knicks game tonight (amazingly they won). Same age as Nicholson - doesn’t even look close to that age (he looks great).

by Anonymousreply 85October 21, 2021 7:11 AM

Hoffman’s age is always an anomaly since he was 29 when he filmed The Graduate.

by Anonymousreply 86October 21, 2021 7:14 AM

So many icons are getting up there and roughly the same age, Hoffman, Nicholson, Redford, Delon. Beatty, de Niro, Pacino.

by Anonymousreply 92October 23, 2021 2:00 AM

R90 god, can’t think of anything worse than a group of friends made up exclusively of actors and a director. Unless they were egoless, what a potential nightmare those meet ups would have been.

by Anonymousreply 93October 23, 2021 2:05 AM

Jessica Simpson and Jewel are still the best guesses in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 94October 23, 2021 2:28 AM

R93. They drank a lot and had fun. They were friends and most had homes in and near Gstaad.

by Anonymousreply 95October 23, 2021 2:31 AM

R93 yeah but they’re Brits so they just like to drink and have fun - it’s a little different.

by Anonymousreply 96October 23, 2021 2:39 AM

I doubt Audrey Hepburn liked to drink and was all that much fun. Don’t know much about the others. Capucine jumped out of her window backwards in her 60s I imagine she was not a barrel of laughs to be around either.

by Anonymousreply 97October 23, 2021 2:41 AM

Audrey seems sweet, if boring. Probably fun to go on walks with.

by Anonymousreply 98October 23, 2021 2:44 AM

r97 I wish we knew more about exactly HOW famous persons jumped out of windows (frontwards or backwards, for example)

by Anonymousreply 99October 23, 2021 2:52 AM

If I were going to be hauled up in a chalet in Gstaad in Winter with a bunch of actors of that era I’d choose Peter o’toole, Omar sharif, Roger Moore, Michael Caine, Ursula Andress (she looks like fun) and give me some glamorous European couples like Alain delon and romy schneider and throw in liz and Richard burton and someone crazy like Helmut Berger for good measure. They seem like they would have partied at least. The idea of Audrey Hepburn and or Deborah Kerr, Blake edwards and Julie Andrews… doesn’t sound particularly exciting

by Anonymousreply 100October 23, 2021 2:52 AM

Thank you, R72. Duh.

by Anonymousreply 101October 23, 2021 2:55 AM

^^ many if those were part of the group. Delon was living in Geneva so he went up frequently. Valentino and his lot were regulars. Lots of fun in the Gstaad Palace Hotel bar. And yes, Capucine was great fun

by Anonymousreply 102October 23, 2021 3:05 AM

Brendad Dickson?

by Anonymousreply 103October 23, 2021 3:12 AM
