I loved them. They were so comfortable.
They were big in the 80’s and 90’s.

Comfortable, they were only comfortable because you were drunk then OP.

They’re still around. A futon store advertises frequently on my local stations here in Western MA.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 18, 2021 11:15 PM |
Comfortable as a bed of nails, I think one I slept on every time I visited a friend in San Francisco left me permanently lopsided.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | October 18, 2021 11:17 PM |
They are highly sophisticated in Germany, with all kinds of materials and qualities, and over a thousand euros.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | October 18, 2021 11:21 PM |
They are literally the most uncomfortable sitting furniture
by Anonymous | reply 5 | October 18, 2021 11:24 PM |
Only slightly more comfortable then sleeping directly on the floor.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | October 18, 2021 11:27 PM |
LOL i still have one from the 90's in a spare bedroom. I never got rid of it. It's metal and the mattress/cushion is still in good shape. It wasn't anything fancy when i bought it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | October 18, 2021 11:46 PM |
They became click clack sofas
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 18, 2021 11:49 PM |
Let's not talk about moving when you own a futon couch! Fucking nightmare.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 18, 2021 11:52 PM |
They’re fine! They send their love!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 18, 2021 11:54 PM |
The biggest lie a host can give you: “Our futon is different: it’s really comfortable!”
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 19, 2021 12:01 AM |
Futons are not comfortable for the ever more obese Americans. The svelte Japanese have no complaints about them.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 19, 2021 12:04 AM |
Back in the late 1980s I purchased a futon bed that came with a collapsible wooden bed frame. It was for visitors and I had it for years. Futons are okay for short term sleeping, not comfortable enough to sleep on indefinitely.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 19, 2021 12:13 AM |
If you are the top, a futon let's you dig your feet in and push hard. If you are the bottom, you might get crushed when he does.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | October 19, 2021 2:44 AM |
Right next to waterbeds in fake bed hell.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | October 19, 2021 2:46 AM |
They’re like pet beds for people.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 19, 2021 2:49 AM |
I used futons all throughout my student days. The comfort really depending on the quality of futon
by Anonymous | reply 17 | October 19, 2021 12:54 PM |
I slept on one for six years. It took a while to get used to it. But once I did, it was fine. No back aches. That's the main thing.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 19, 2021 12:58 PM |
Too many Americans are FAT WHORES! now. They'd break the wooden frame and are unable to hoist their fat up off the futon.
So now we have giant beds that look like marshmellows, and are hard to get onto if you're a smaller person.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 19, 2021 1:06 PM |
I love them. but western ones are LUXURIOUS compared to the pallets the japanese actually call "futon"
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 19, 2021 1:08 PM |
I'm not fat so I guess I don't get the fat comments? Why is a futon more uncomfortable if you're fat? The only one I slept on was wooden and it seemed like it had a board sticking into my midsection. I had to put a quilt under the mattress, didn't really help.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 19, 2021 1:17 PM |
[quote]Unlike the sofa beds called “futons” in the US, Japanese futons are quilted sleeping pads that are stuffed with cotton or fiber fill and can sit directly on the floor or on a foam, tatami, or wooden mat.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 19, 2021 1:27 PM |
Everyone should use a futon!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | October 19, 2021 1:38 PM |
Wasn't it named after the guy who invented the steamship?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 19, 2021 1:46 PM |
Weren't they primarily for young people who couldn't afford real furniture?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 19, 2021 1:47 PM |
Sleeping on a yoga mat on the floor is more comfortable than a futon. Disagree about the fat comments. I'd think having more personal cushion would make it more comfortable?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 19, 2021 2:11 PM |
An airbed is more comfortable than a yoga mat.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 19, 2021 2:13 PM |
What happened to those beds where you put the quarter in? LOL
by Anonymous | reply 29 | October 19, 2021 2:15 PM |
Magic Fingers!!!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | October 19, 2021 2:21 PM |
Japanese floor mattresses are wonderful.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | October 19, 2021 2:26 PM |
I had a futon in the aughts when I was living on the West Coast. It’s still easy to find them there. I did put mine on top of a box spring and it was fine for sleeping, but not as comfortable as a mattress. And yes, they are unwieldy to move.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | October 19, 2021 2:37 PM |
Another fad that faded. Like waterbeds.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | October 19, 2021 2:37 PM |
Waterbeds faded mainly because they required special insurance to homeowner's policies to cover damage. Apartment rental either forbad them or again, you had to have special insurance. They weren't worth the extra cost.

Anyone have a suggestion for a cheap, comfortable piece of furniture a guest could use? Air mattresses always seem to deflate.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 19, 2021 11:25 PM |
R35, check Amazon. There are a few choices of mattress-like things that fold up nicely to put away
by Anonymous | reply 36 | October 20, 2021 12:17 AM |
“No one speaks of funtons anymore, and that saddens me.”
by Anonymous | reply 37 | October 20, 2021 12:31 AM |
Air mattresses are now the thing.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | October 20, 2021 12:32 AM |
Didn't Dr. Who defeat them in Planet of the Futons?
by Anonymous | reply 39 | October 20, 2021 12:34 AM |
They are fine up to the age of 21 when you're an undergrad and a drunken fool half the time. For adults who aren't drunk, futons are awful.
