I remember when he was being coaxed years back to run for president. He said no, his wife was opposed to it. I'm assuming he'll have a military funeral and will probably be big since he was well known around the world.

I remember him making his announcement way back in the day that he wouldn’t run for President, and then many years later when he endorsed Obama.

He lived his life in such an exemplary way that it makes me doubt he would have lied intentionally about Iraq, so I assume Bush and Cheney fucked him over in some way. But all he would ever say about it was that he made a mistake, refusing to blame anyone but himself.

He had a rep among career military people as a "politician", which is considered an epithet. Anyone above Lt COL has to be pretty political in the army to get ahead but it shouldn't be too obvious. He was peripherally involved in the coverup of the My Lai massacre in Vietnam and then later compromised himself on the Iraq War. I wouldn't venerate him too much. His son was a hack FCC commissioner.
