Thelma Lou from The Andy Griffith Show is Dead to Me

Betty Lynn, the actress best known for her portrayal of Thelma Lou, Barney Fife’s sweetheart on The Andy Griffith Show, died peacefully on Saturday, October 16, after a brief illness. She was 95.

Betty’s first film for Fox was 1948’s Sitting Pretty with Clifton Webb, Robert Young and Maureen O’Hara. Betty won a Photoplay Gold Medal for her portrayal of Ginger. Later that year, Betty also was in Apartment for Peggy with William Holden and Jeanne Crain. Warner Bros. borrowed Betty from Fox in order to have her play the title role in June Bride, another 1948 release, with Bette Davis and Robert Montgomery. Betty made several more movies for Fox and others, including RKO, MGM and Universal. Among the films were Mother Is a Freshman, Father Was a Fullback, Cheaper by the Dozen, Payment on Demand (again with Bette Davis), Many Rivers to Cross and Behind the High Wall. When her contract with Fox expired, Betty sought work in television, then still in its early days. Her early performances included eight months in The Egg and I, which is often considered to be TV’s first comedy serial and was broadcast live from New York five days a week on CBS in 1952. Back in Hollywood the next year, Betty played the female lead opposite Ray Bolger in Where’s Raymond? for a season on ABC-TV. During this time and spanning decades, Betty also performed in live theater productions, including the lead role in Peg O’ My Heart and roles in The Moon Is Blue, King of Hearts, Be Your Age, Come Blow Your Horn and Love Letters. Betty performed in more than two dozen episodes of Matinee Theater, NBC-TV’s popular hour-long anthology series that aired, usually live, five days a week. She also continued to work in radio, including for episodes of Lux Radio Theater, Stars Over Hollywood and some installments of Family Theater, as either a lead or host. Betty was a fixture in television Westerns during the 1950s and 1960s. A partial roundup includes episodes of Bronco, Wagon Train, Cheyenne, Tales of Wells Fargo and Sugarfoot, as well as being co-star for two seasons of Disney Presents: Texas John Slaughter with Tom Tryon. Betty was still under contract with Disney for Texas John Slaughter when producers for The Andy Griffith Show contacted her about playing Barney Fife’s girlfriend, Thelma Lou. Fortunately for Barney, Mayberry and generations of TV viewers, Disney was in the process of winding down its production of Texas John Slaughter and therefore agreed to release Betty to work on the Griffith show. “I had seen the Griffith show twice before I went to read for the part,” Betty recalled. “I remember that I laughed out loud—it was so funny. I didn’t do that very often. I thought, Gee, this is really unusual.” Betty always realized that Thelma Lou’s role in Mayberry depended on Barney Fife. When Don Knotts decided to depart the series after five seasons in order to make movies for Universal Studios, Betty knew that meant that she would be leaving Mayberry as well. Betty made one final appearance on the Griffith show when Don Knotts returned in the sixth season for the first of his five guest appearances as Barney. In all, Betty appeared in 26 Griffith episodes, which were originally broadcast between 1961 and 1966 and spanned parts of the show’s first six seasons. Of Griffith actors still living at the time of Betty’s death, only Ron Howard appeared in more episodes of the series than Betty. Fans would have to wait more than 20 years, but all was once again right in the world of Mayberry, when Thelma Lou and Barney finally got married in Return to Mayberry, the made-for-TV movie that was a ratings blockbuster for NBC in 1986. “Once we got there to film the movie, everything fell right into place,” Betty said. “The spark was still there.”

Thank you for not posting *Betty Lynn is DEAD to Me*, because...well...

RIP Ms. Lynn. Thank you for being part of one of my favorite shows.

Persistence always pays off. She tried to get in to homosexual Don Knotts' pants for ever so many years.

I guess Barney is finally free to pursue Gomer

by Anonymousreply 6October 17, 2021 5:11 PM

Any adults now left from the show other than Elinor Donahue?

by Anonymousreply 7October 17, 2021 5:13 PM

JUST TO CLARIFY: I am still alive, and still singing my heart out for my legions of DL fans.

@r7, I'm an adult

by Anonymousreply 9October 17, 2021 5:17 PM

My favorite characters were "the fun girls." One of them appeared in The Apartment and later committed suicide in the '80s. They were hilarious.

The Andy Griffith Show sure had a way of dealing with deplorables without being offensive. All those rednecks, hillbillies, hookers and drunks were always treated with respect

They even did a show about their local anti-vaxer, Rafe Hollister. Andy went out to the resistant Rafe's farm and described Rafe's future funeral and sings "Bury me with a silver spade", similar to Oklahoma's "Poor Judd is Dead" scene. When Rafe changed his mind, Andy brought a nurse out to administer the vaccination.

Thanks for starting this thread about me, OPie. Aunt Bee sends her love.

And that nurse was none other than Eve Simpson, Cabot Cove's favorite realtor.

It was fascinating to me that Thelma Lou was never given a last name (until she married Barney Fife in "Return to Mayberry," of course).

by Anonymousreply 23October 17, 2021 6:56 PM

[quote] Arthur or Benaderet, [R19]?

I would bet they meant Aunt Bee (but misspelled it, as everyone does).

by Anonymousreply 24October 17, 2021 6:57 PM

You're easily fascinated, r23.

by Anonymousreply 25October 17, 2021 7:03 PM

[quote] It was fascinating to me that Thelma Lou was never given a last name (until she married Barney Fife in "Return to Mayberry," of course).

The writers couldn't even be bothered to give Opie's ma a name or backstory. Same with his maternal background. Every reference in the series to a relative, however long removed, was to a "Taylor." Not a Shriver, Smith or Lawford in the bunch.

by Anonymousreply 26October 17, 2021 7:07 PM

That was my point, r24.

by Anonymousreply 27October 17, 2021 7:24 PM

She was a man-stealing WHORE.

by Anonymousreply 28October 17, 2021 8:06 PM

They never gave Thelma Lou a last name. They also never said where she worked.

by Anonymousreply 29October 17, 2021 8:14 PM

R34, I agree...Betty Lynn, Thelma Lou.

by Anonymousreply 35October 17, 2021 9:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 36October 17, 2021 9:49 PM

Wasn't there a Miss Poovie running around with the boys, too?

by Anonymousreply 37October 17, 2021 10:04 PM

What about Juanita?

by Anonymousreply 38October 17, 2021 10:08 PM

[quote] The Andy Griffith Show sure had a way of dealing with deplorables without being offensive. All those rednecks, hillbillies, hookers and drunks were always treated with respect

When the show first started, Andy was one of them. He was all cornpone and molasses. He incorporated a lot of his country boy stand up act into the show and it is pretty unbearable when the older episodes are aired. Took a while before he dropped the exaggerated country accent and became the common sense sheriff of Mayberry we all remember.

by Anonymousreply 39October 17, 2021 10:13 PM

^His character was even more exaggerated in the episode from Make Room for Daddy that spawned the show.

by Anonymousreply 40October 17, 2021 10:38 PM

r38, see r28. And R33.

by Anonymousreply 41October 18, 2021 1:07 AM

I never realized that they never showed Juanita.

Do you think “Juanita” was considered a funny name back then? Like “Barney can only get a girl named Juanita, ha ha.”

by Anonymousreply 42October 18, 2021 1:35 AM

R42, I saw it differently. Juanita seemed of Latin descent so I thought Barney liked a little flava.

by Anonymousreply 43October 18, 2021 1:36 AM

She was Juanita just so Barney could sing this song.

Oddly enough there were two Juanitas on the show, the mayor's daughter was also named Juanita. She had a sister named Josephine but its possible they re-named her and they were the same person.

The name Juanita, who was likely a white woman, was considered exotic and somewhat pretentious in the hick town of Mayberry. It always got a laugh.

There were few Latinos in North Carolina in 1960, and none would be in a rural town like Mayberry.

Sixty years later, the Hispanic population is soaring in urban and rural areas of the state.

by Anonymousreply 46October 18, 2021 3:13 AM

I have a close relative named Juanita who was born in the 30s. She was 100% Native American. So... Maybe there's more than one possibility.

Betty Lynn became lifelong friends with Bette Davis after they made June Bride in 1948. Davis was the queen of Warners studio and lent a helping hand to featured player Lynn who was just starting out.

by Anonymousreply 51October 18, 2021 12:17 PM

Was she one of the countless actresses that Griffith and Knotts sexually harassed?

by Anonymousreply 52October 18, 2021 12:20 PM

^ No, that was me

by Anonymousreply 53October 18, 2021 12:28 PM

She moved to Mt. Airy -- like Frances Bavier? I always found that a bit odd. It would be like Ted Knight moving to Minneapolis, or Joan Collins moving to Denver.

by Anonymousreply 54October 18, 2021 1:30 PM

^^ She had a much happier life in Mount Airy than France Bavier found in the nearby town of Siler City. Betty Lynn became an active member of her assisted living home and community, while Bavier died almost a recluse in her own home.

by Anonymousreply 55October 18, 2021 1:38 PM

Another one of the Darling family, Rodney Dillard, is still living and performing. I don’t think he ever had any lines, he just played in the family jug band with his brothers.

I would imagine that most of the kids who played bit parts as Opie's friends are still around, there were a lot of characters that came and went trough Mayberry

by Anonymousreply 57October 18, 2021 4:29 PM

Including, R57, Ron’s brother, Clint. But other than Miss Ellie & some of the Darlings, I don’t think any of the show’s ever recurring adult characters are still alive.

Little Ricky (Richard Keith/Keith Thibodeaux) played two different friends of Opie. He's still with us.

I had a great aunt named Juanita, biracial, from a small southern mountain town and she too was born in the 1930s. I’m going to guess it was a popular name for a time. But my aunt went by Nita, I don’t think anyone ever called her Juanita as an adult.

by Anonymousreply 61October 19, 2021 12:24 PM

I had it right the first time, disregard R61.

by Anonymousreply 62October 19, 2021 12:25 PM

Juanita is not an uncommon name in the south. Exotic middle names were somewhat common from the Victorian era on actually. One of my grandmother’s names was Valencia, and her mother had the name Scheherazade. I think it had something to do with signaling to people that your parents were educated and had read books other than the Bible.

by Anonymousreply 63October 19, 2021 1:48 PM

Another one from that cast who moved to North Carolina in retirement. She and Frances Bavier both lived in Mt. Airy, although I think Bavier had already died before Lynn moved there. Griffith (born in Mt. Airy) also moved back there initially after retirement and then moved to Roanoke Island later on. I've been to Mt. Airy. I don't quite understand the draw.

by Anonymousreply 64October 19, 2021 2:01 PM

^^ Lynn moved to an assisted living home in Mt. Airy, while Bavier moved to her own home in Siler City, another small town about 90 miles away. Lynn was happy in her final years while Bavier became something of a recluse living alone with cats in her large home.

by Anonymousreply 65October 19, 2021 2:13 PM

Bavier for some reason was difficult on the set of the show. I don't know why and Griffith never explained it. She apologized for her behavior to Andy before she died.

by Anonymousreply 66October 19, 2021 2:24 PM

[quote] Bavier for some reason was difficult on the set of the show.

She was very embittered that her Bavier cousins Jackie & Lee froze her out of their glamorous lives.

by Anonymousreply 67October 19, 2021 3:35 PM

^ My guess is that she found the whole idea of a sit-com beneath her, but did it because it paid the bills
