Who else could have played Erica in An Unmarried Woman?

What if Jill Clayburgh wasn't alive or was tied up in a Broadway show and unable to play Erica in Mazursky's brilliant An Unmarried Woman? Which actress of the era would have been able to make such an impact with the character.

Absolutely no one.

A pox on your thought process.

Meryl and Jessica weren't old enough to have a teenaged daughter, but Glenn could have passed for 40-ish.

by Anonymousreply 2October 14, 2021 6:02 PM

Moi, of course.

by Anonymousreply 3October 14, 2021 6:05 PM

Sandy Dennis or Karen Black.

by Anonymousreply 4October 14, 2021 6:24 PM

Only one choice for Erica.

Susan Lucci.

by Anonymousreply 5October 14, 2021 6:30 PM

Bonnie Franklin would have been a revelation!

by Anonymousreply 6October 14, 2021 7:09 PM

Interesting idea about Elizabeth Montgomery. She did so many TV films after Bewitched ended. I wonder how she'd have fared in theatrical releases.

by Anonymousreply 7October 14, 2021 7:10 PM

In all seriousness, most of the actors listed already present as 'fully realized' modern women, Field is the only one who doesn't and would seem to be the best choice.

by Anonymousreply 8October 14, 2021 7:31 PM

Diana Ross would have been interesting.

by Anonymousreply 9October 15, 2021 2:08 AM

Farrah Fawcett. :-)

by Anonymousreply 10October 15, 2021 2:49 AM

Diane Keaton and Jill Clayburgh were sort of interchangeable at the time so that’s the most obvious choice to me.

by Anonymousreply 11October 15, 2021 3:10 AM

Miss Dunaway would never throw up on a street like some common hobo.

by Anonymousreply 12October 15, 2021 3:48 AM

Sally Kellerman

by Anonymousreply 13October 15, 2021 4:21 AM

Gena Rowlands

by Anonymousreply 14October 15, 2021 4:22 AM

Lindsey Graham?

by Anonymousreply 15October 15, 2021 4:24 AM

Not on the list: Jane Fonda and Blythe Danner.

by Anonymousreply 16October 15, 2021 5:19 AM

Why is this thread crossed out? Who could it have offended?

by Anonymousreply 17October 15, 2021 5:24 AM

I didn't get that movie.

by Anonymousreply 18October 15, 2021 5:24 AM

If the story had been transported to France, Isabelle Adjani would have slayed.

by Anonymousreply 19October 16, 2021 2:22 AM

r17 Lily Rabe did it.

by Anonymousreply 20October 16, 2021 3:02 AM

Kathryn Harrold

by Anonymousreply 21October 16, 2021 4:52 AM

Was it considered odd she lost the Oscar to Jane Fonda? I guess Fonda won in a Vietnam gesture. (She's so bland in a bland role in that film whereas Clayburgh kind of made film history.)

by Anonymousreply 22October 16, 2021 4:56 AM

Dunaway would be interesting. VERY different movie.

by Anonymousreply 23October 16, 2021 4:56 AM

Raquel Welch would have made it a very different film. I like the idea of her dancing around in her panties.

by Anonymousreply 24October 26, 2021 7:04 PM

Jane Fonda turned it down because she didn't think it was political enough.

by Anonymousreply 25October 26, 2021 9:49 PM

And they mention Jane Fonda in the movie!

by Anonymousreply 26March 4, 2022 2:18 PM

R16- Jane Fonda was offered the role of Erica in 1977 and she turned it down. She thought the part/movie was trite or something- meanwhile she appeared in that DRIVEL called Coming Home instead which co starred Jon Voight.

by Anonymousreply 27March 4, 2022 2:23 PM

R6- In an Unmarried Woman she could would have said-

SAUL , HOLD ME!

by Anonymousreply 28March 4, 2022 2:24 PM

Miss Angie Dickinson!

by Anonymousreply 29March 4, 2022 2:28 PM

Marsha Mason would have been as raw as Jill was. And I agree with the person above re Diana Ross but I doubt she would even be considered back then which is a shame. This is really a perfectly cast movie from Jill to Michael Murphy’s idiotic but sympathetic husband to hot Alan Bates, the insufferable but likeable daughter and Erica’s inner circle who are really believable as friends. Great movie.

Jane was already signed to do Julia when was offered the part. She told Mazursky to follow her to London to convince her but he declined.

by Anonymousreply 31March 4, 2022 3:07 PM

Charlotte Rampling would have brought a coolness and sophistication to the role.

by Anonymousreply 32March 4, 2022 3:20 PM

You bitter should be grateful I talked Lucy out of doing this.

by Anonymousreply 33March 5, 2022 2:37 AM
