Surprised she doesn't get more discussion here. The woman responsible for getting prayer banned in public schools in the 60's. Frequent talk-show guest in the 70's and always drew massive ratings. Had the balls to tell Christers they were nuts. A mostly very intelligent woman who read the Bible cover to cover and could hold her own in any argument about religion. Founded American Atheists and had cable-access tv show. Murdered during the summer of 1995 at age 76 along with her son and granddaughter, bodies not found until 3 years later.

They made a movie about her starring Melissa Leo several years ago. Didn't see it though....

I read the story of her abduction and murder, terrible stuff. I used to watch her a lot on talk shows, her biggest weakness was that she didn't have a sense of humor and those evangelists would use that to wind her up.

Yeah she came across as too combative and humorless. She seemed angry to me. Generally unpleasant though I'm basically an atheist too. Can't remember who killed her or why now.
