What was the lie?

Too bad he doesn’t have a daughter to draft a treatise on the use of this word.

That was quick.

Funny, he worked at ESPN and they did not say a peep.

Homophobic stuff is not career terminating. But the RACE thing most certainly is

The league office hates Gruden, and is clearly responsible for the emails leaking to the New York Times (Note that Washington owner Dan Snyder, an even bigger asshole than Gruden, had none of his emails leaked).
Gruden is a prick, so I won’t shed any tears for him; but this is a league that allowed Michael Vick to resume playing football after he pled guilty to manually strangling, drowning, electrocuting, and torturing hundreds of dogs. Gruden wasn’t even an employee of the NFL when he sent those offensive private emails.

In this case, it wasn't like he said one or two things. He said multiple things over a period of years. That definitely played a factor here. You can get away with a one-off comment. Most recently the acting Browns head coach Mike Priefer (when Stefanski had COVID) did but even that wasn't in print. That was overheard by a player and reported. I also doubt what was leaked and reported on with Gruden were the only things that were present.
As for race: you can't coach a team that thinks you think they don't respect them in 2021. The players would have eaten him alive the first chance they got.

He wasn't, but he was an employee of ESPN and for some strange reason they seem to be avoiding accountability here. Funny how that works.
As for Michael Vick, the NFL has a LOOOOOOONNNNG history of getting away with that sort of thing. If you're a good player and you don't murder anyone then the amorphous "Code of Conduct" goes out the window.
Antonio Brown would still be playing today if he wasn't so cuckoo bananas. If you're good and the (will turn a blind eye in a second) Patriots don't want you, then you have serious problems.

Um, Antonio Brown *is* playing today and doing rather well.

You'd be wrong, shit-for-brains, but then, gay racists like you always look for a way to whine about homophobia and defend racism because you don't give a shit when other minorities are targeted.
He didn't resign or get fired when the email came out about referring to a black man as having huge lips the size of tires (and spare me the attempt to dismiss an age-old racist trope as not being one). He also referred to this black man as "Dumboriss" (His name is DeMaurice). It should be noted that this man is a lawyer who worked for the DOJ and white shoe law firms, but someone like Gruden is incapable of viewing blacks as capable of being educated.

R13 Maybe he said it because there are plenty examples on sports where homophobic behaviour ended with a slap on the wrist.
Generally there's a very low key reaction to homophobic slurs and that's recent, before that it was a non issue.
Maybe you have to apologize but nobody had a real problem in his career for being blatantly homophobic. Maybe that's changing, it would be a good sign

Agreed with R10; Gruden deserves whatever he gets, but someone wanted to shank him. In response, it will be interesting which emails are leaked next.
Jerry Jones, watch your back...

Maybe this is true in your home state of Kentucky but in the places where people are actually productive, homophobic or transphobic statements will absolutely get a person fired.

Just out of curiosity: What do people like you think of how Colin Kaepernack has been treated? I saw a lot of people on here going after him for simply protesting injustice, yet a homophobic, misogynist, racist white asshole who went after people like Colin K kept his job. So do you feel you are more of a victim than someone who did nothing wrong but express his 1A right?

R18 My guess is that Gruden gets a sizable negotiated payout; I think he had ~$60 million remaining on his contract. He wasn’t (and couldn’t have been) fired for cause, but he was forced out. He and Mark Davis like each other, and it seems clear that the league forced Davis to get rid of Gruden against his own wishes.
