Let's face it, that town is about suspending the sense of reality to a certain degree in a film -- and if you're going to have an openly gay lead actor in a story relationship with an actor of the opposite sex, it's going to likely work against the story's intended romantic angle, their intercommunications dynamic, the audiences' reactions and, ultimately, the film's box office success to a great degree, IMO.

I used to be a fan but honestly I’m bored by him.
