Did the house ever not flip to the other party at the midterms

when a new president was elected. In recent years I think it always did. (Trump, Obama, Clinton, don't know about George W.)

by Anonymousreply 20October 11, 2021 5:23 PM

The House didn't change parties during George W Bush's first midterm election.

The 9/11 effect, R1.

by Anonymousreply 2October 10, 2021 4:17 AM

The House was in Democratic hands exclusively from the mid-‘50s to the mid-‘90s, when the last of the Southern conservative Democrats died, retired or switched parties.

Wow so Clinton losing it must have been a big deal r3. I guess that is why Newt became famous.

by Anonymousreply 4October 10, 2021 4:36 AM

Just like Obama, Bill Clinton triggered the GQP in the republican party. He was popular, good for the economy, handled foreign policy quite well, brought people to the pols. He was an all around success. And they couldn't find any dirt on him until Monica Lewinsky spilled the beans to Linda Tripp.

I guess the GQP must have known for a long time that they can win elections anymore unless they cheat and massively engage in voter suppression.

[quote] And they couldn't find any dirt on him until Monica Lewinsky spilled the beans to Linda Tripp.

We may never have really known about Monica but for the Paula Jones lawsuit. Her attorneys in discovery were trying to bring up similar claims, e.g., Bill having sexual relations with women before even knowing their names, when, through Linda Tripp, they learned about Lewinsky & asked about this in Clinton's deposition.

22 will be an outlier OP

On the one hand you have massive gerrymandering to create GOP-safe districts

On the other, you have the stench of Trump and the distinct possibility that the GOP will run candidates who make Marjorie Taylor-Greene look sane and will lose what they thought were safe districts. (This is more of a possibility in the Senate than the House.)

by Anonymousreply 7October 10, 2021 1:02 PM

R7 Gerrymanding GOP districts but the Democrats are too stupid to do the same thing. California lost a seat and instead of merging Kevin McCarthy and Devin Nunes' districts, they got rid of a Los Angeles Democrat. Give the Republicans a taste of their own medicine. California is too fucking politically correct.

Mark my words, the House won't flip in 2022.

Covid, do your thing.

by Anonymousreply 10October 10, 2021 2:33 PM

So what are the chances democrats keep House and Senate in 2022 and what are they doing to achieve it?

by Anonymousreply 11October 11, 2021 5:55 AM

To follow up on R7, the hope is that Trump endorses people, especially in Senate races, who are unelectable in the general election. Meaning that a good percentage of Republicans and independents think "No. This person is way too crazy."

Democrats have to allow that to happen by nominating competent candidates who will not be plagued by scandal and not overly Woke.

by Anonymousreply 12October 11, 2021 9:45 AM

Way-too-crazy got 12 million more votes in 2020 R12.

by Anonymousreply 13October 11, 2021 1:52 PM

Because way more people actually voted R13

The magic of mail-in ballots: make it easy for people to vote and they will.

Even Trump voters

by Anonymousreply 14October 11, 2021 1:58 PM

The Senate probably stays Dem. Republicans are on defense there, even in some states that are like R+8, but nonetheless tough holds for them due to circumstance.

by Anonymousreply 15October 11, 2021 2:48 PM

In 1998, Democrats actually gained House seats because of the Lewinsky impeachment

by Anonymousreply 16October 11, 2021 2:51 PM

Democrats are so stupid. In several states where Democrats control state legislatures, they have Fuchs the job of redistricting to bipartisan or nonpartisan commissions, instead of drawing districts themselves. Meanwhile, republicans are gerrymandering to the extreme to maximize their power. Why are Democrats unilaterally disarming? So stupid

by Anonymousreply 17October 11, 2021 2:54 PM

Democrats need to get Biden’s approval numbers up. Republicans can take the Senate and bulldoze over Democrats in state elections if Biden’s ratings remain this low

by Anonymousreply 18October 11, 2021 2:55 PM

“ To follow up on [R7], the hope is that Trump endorses people, especially in Senate races, who are unelectable in the general election. Meaning that a good percentage of Republicans and independents think "No. This person is way too crazy."

That won’t work

The roaring economy didn't hurt, either.
