That phrase gets thrown around so much lately for anyone anybody dislikes. I'm trying to understand the actual meaning better and thought a movie would help. (new, old, classic whatever.)
What are some films with good depictions of narcissists?

You do not say you are a narcissist, OP.
You’re not very bright, are ya? That’s usually something I like in an OP, but in your case, it’s a toxic mess.

Good call on Blanche DuBois. It's been a while since I saw "Streetcar," so, I'd have to pay more attention to Stanley. He wasn't likeable, but not sure I'd say he was a narcissist.
I never liked GWTW, so, no comment.

Sex and the City 2. Carrie Bradshaw was insufferable enough in the series and the first movie but the second one really took her narcissism to a whole new level.

I'm not sure about Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. Alex never displays any of these symptoms:
Grandiose sense of self-importance. ... Lives in a fantasy world that supports their delusions of grandeur. ... Needs constant praise and admiration. ... Sense of entitlement. ... Exploits others without guilt or shame. ... Frequently demeans, intimidates, bullies, or belittles others.
She's pretty broken a few minutes into the film. I always thought the beginning where she's super glammed up and in control was just a cover for the deep longing that emerges.
Is that narcissism?

I've read the facts r25. I thought it would be fun to bring it to film for DL but scolds like you and r5 always seem to want to ruin the fun.
(and in my class they did show Mildred Pierce as an example of it so bravo to the person who posted that clip.)

R38 she likely has borderline personality. They usually are attracted to narcissists. A lot of DLers seem to wrongly think they are the same disorder. They aren’t. A good example is Betty Broderick and her husband, Dan. She was BPD and he was a Narc.

I’m not sure if it’s narcissism or just sociopathy but Aaron eckhardts character in “in the company of men” and again his character in “towelhead”. Also Jason Patric in “you’re friends and neighbors” but maybe they are all just assholes rather than suffering personality disorders.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 10, 2021 5:22 AM |
That should read “your friends and neighbors” also Bradley cooper in “the hangover” seems rather deluded and narcissistic.

Not a film, but the characters of Phyllis Lindstrom and Sue Ann Nivens from The Mary Tyler Moore Show both exemplify narcissism to a T.

The scene in GWTW where Scarlett, having just been disappointed (for the first time) by Ashley, is walking up the stairs lost in her own misery, while everyone is running downstairs past her going, "War! They've declared war!" is a crystalline portrayal of narcissism in action.
She falls short in some other ways, though. Throughout the book it is made clear that she has a conviction that her mother and Melanie are Great Ladies and that Scarlett...isn't. A true narcissist wouldn't have taken responsibility for Tara and everyone in it when she comes home towards the end of the war. Nor would she have stayed in Atlanta for the birth of Beau. She promised Ashley she would look after Melanie and that's why she did it. Sure, she wanted something from Ashley, but looking after Melanie in a life-or-death situation was not the way to get it.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 10, 2021 10:20 AM |
R61 Looking after Melanie for her beloved Ashley was a self-less task, I agree. But, just like the former orange president, Scarlett came back and took responsibility for Tara because she is a WINNER..she said she would never go hungry again. I think this theme runs through the whole story; Scarlett had to be the best at everything. She was a an awesome narcissistic force to watch. The interesting thing is narcissists won't ever feel defeated for long.
Trying to think of other good narcissistic movie characters.
