Remember when a Ray Conniff singer blasted Nixon to his face at a White House event?

I'm a little obsessed with this woman at the moment. Her name is Carole Feraci and she's the Canadian-born "oobie doobie" girl (her description) who took the opportunity at the group's White House performance celebrating Readers' Digest's 50th anniversary to unfold a banner and give a very brief, measured denunciation of the Vietnam War.

The group immediately launches into "Ma, he's making eyes at me," after which someone (not Nixon) yells "Throw her out!" Conniff asks her to leave and she replies "Certainly!"

Her voice is so measured and calm. Whether it was from conviction or from 'ludes or valium, the tone and rhythm of her voice is perfect for the message she was sending and the crowd gathered. I want to hear more of her, but she was basically shut out of the industry after this and I can only find a couple of articles and interviews about her.

I first saw this clip on the 1971 music documentary currently streaming on Apple and had to learn more. I think she died in 2017. I'll post a couple of links below in case anyone else finds this incident and this woman as fascinating as I do.

Nixon discusses with incident with John Connally the next day on the phone. He laughs about it.

I think I was wrong about her 2017 death. That appears to be another woman by the same name.

This infuriated my brother. He thought she deserved imprisonment and banishment if not worse. We live in Ohio, so he was similarly unsympathetic toward the Kent State dead.

I have kept my memory of this alive for years. It's like a Trivial Pursuit question. I remember it well. Would any of us have the guts to do this? Can you imagine doiing it in China? BANG!
