The original series had a social context - feminism and skyrocketing divorce rates in the early 70s - as well as being personally meaningful to Bergman (a fact which becomes especially obvious when you watch the fantastic albeit depressing 2003 coda, Saraband). I watched the first episode of this, but I really felt them struggling to make the material relevant in 2021. I'm almost convinced it was made simply because Jessica Chastain bears a vague resemblance to Liv Ullmann, though she's a far less compelling actress. I like Isaac (and he's got a nicer ass than Erland Josephson for sure), but I'm really not feeling motivated to finish this.

Well, it's no Josh O’Connor in God's Country. That's the golden standard, I believe.
