The perverse thing is that for outsiders like us, he can be considered a sociopath, but he really is "just" a soldier following orders. A lot of superhero stories are about the struggle between following orders vs. following your conscience.

There is a scene in UnReal's first season where Stroma's character fucks a wife while her husband watches (which is called a cuckold scenario). That was such a hot and lurid scene, which I didn't expect from fairly wholesome Lifetime. And they created it all without showing Stroma or the actress, who played the wife, in any way naked.

I think Abeydayo is a fun character. Much better than the blonde agent though I am starting to warm up to her. But the best characters are Peacemaker, Vigilante, Judomaster, and of course Eagly.

Got to say, seeing the season finale, I'm team butterfly. Us human beings are self-destructive fuck-ups.

Gunn held the finale back from reviewer copies because he didn't want internet spoilers and he was right. The cameos would have been spoiled and would have built up too much expectation

It's been a nice series. I felt Vigilante was a little underused as a character (I would have loved to see him and peacemaker fight in a battle at the end, if not fuck), but I have hopes they'll do more with him for season 2.

One thing that helped this season was the Big Bad was an entire alien race rather than just one supervillain. That kept the focus on the major characters more.

Three things Dunn did that helped make the series more fun than it otherwise would have been, and certainly made it more fun than THE SUICIDE SQUAD:

1) The opening dance sequence for each episode made it so you couldn't take the violence and mayhem too seriously--you knew it was just a story, and a silly one at that;

2) By giving peacemaker a conscience this time out so that he didn't kill children or bystanders, they made him more likable while still keeping the character a murderous douchebag.

3) it wasn't trying to gross us out like THE SUICIDE SQUAD did with too many hideous deaths.

This has been one of the best superhero series I've seen, and I loved that it gave John Cena, Freddie Stroma, Annie Chang, and especially Danielle Brooks so much space to show how funny and likable they can be. I'm sorry Chang won't be in future episodes, but the other three will be.

I thought they would reveal that Vigilante was taken over by a butterfly after being shot in the back (and wasn't he shot by the police chief who got Vigilante's knife in his head, but then showed up again down in the basement with the cow without a single scratch?).

So does Peacemaker have more of the cow nectar in jars, or was that Goff’s last meal?

The last episode made sure it was said clearly enough so the audience couldn't excuse it as a joke by making it one of the reasons why his father hates him.

I totally missed it when he said it. Funny that Gunn says it was Cena who insisted the character be Bi. He did the three way wtih Vigilante, My dirty mind hopes he messed aroudn with him as well as the rando woman.

I loved that Eagley is smarter than the average eagle, but that he's nowhere near as smart as Peacemaker thinks he is. Dropping the sonic book helmet in the middle of the woods was one of the funniest things I'd seen in a long time after all the build-up that he was going to take it all the way to the barn.

I also loved that the flying helmet took off by itself so they could never get it again. That was another hilarious surprise.

What made Eagly's fumble even funnier is that after seeing Eagly hug Peacemaker, Adebayo bought into how smart Eagly is so she had a look of excited anticipation when Eagly soared off and it was all for nought.

I think that's because it came about as a result of John Cena improving it in the dialogue and James Gunn being okay with it. So at the beginning it gets thrown in as an almost joke but by the time they shot the finale they were able to better integrate it into the dialogue.

If it's going to happen then it will happen next season so Gunn can write it, the location can be booked and the actor can be cast and cleared, especially since the reaction to it was largely positive.

It's no longer the days of the Comics Code, Plenty of DC comics heroes have also now come out as bi. Clark Kent's son, one of the Robins and for many years it's been said that Wonder Woman is bi. DC is certainly not going to have a problem with Peacemaker joining that group.

I didn’t realize until I read it today that James Gunn’s first wife was Jenna Fischer from The Office.

Binged watched the whole thing yesterday and I loved it way more than I thought it would. I thought John was great, but Freddie Stroma as Vigilante walked away with the whole show. He was doing Ryan Reynolds better than Ryan Reynolds. I know James Gunn is a big fan of the show Barry and I can kind of see it’s influence in Chris/Barry and Adrian/Noho Hank.

I really liked Economos and I can’t wait to see the actor who played Murn as the High Evolutionary in GOTG 3 now and I see why James hired him again, he plays quiet strength really well.

The season finale was the highest streamed episode in the HBOMax's history and up 44% from the season premiere, which is remarkable. Well deserved

Regarding the comments here that Stroma is much sexier in the Vigilante role than in previous roles, a lot of people seem to agree at least that it’s a noticeable transformation.

I would love to know what happened with the original casting of Vigilante, because the difference between Freddie and the other actor is pretty big. Freddie Stroma looks much much better as a brunette than as his natural strawberry/golden blond. He's also lost quite a bit of weight for this role. Not that he was overweight before - he wasn't - but he's gotten much leaner and more muscular, which can affect anyone's facial structure.

I'm not sure I agree that Vigilante is a sociopath. James Gunn has liked a few tweets discussing that Adrian is coded autistic, and I definitely could see that angle in how awkward, painfully literal and socially naive he is. He does show empathy for the people he cares about, and he wants them to be happy, which isn't something a sociopath gives a shit about. But he has a very fucked up moral code that his little found family seems to be slowly reforming. Adebayo picked up on this when she planted it into his mind that Chris would always be hurt and unhappy with his father around in order to con him into going to prison to kill the White Dragon. That was empathy. A true sociopath wouldn't care about anyone's happiness selflessly.

There's no way the original Vigilante actor could have sold absurd lines like "Well, butterflies are a type of bird" the way Stroma did. He has great chemistry with Brooks and Cena especially.

R275 I see what you are saying, but I think you are confused between a psychopath vs a sociopath.

It’s kind of like the arguments people make against Tony Soprano being a sociopath because he loves his kids and animals. Unlike psychopaths, sociopaths actually can form connections with other people who usually remind them of themselves (In Vig’s case, it would be the violence he and PM partake in) or happy memories (children, animals), people that have traits that they want in their lives (if they grew up with an emotionally detached mother, they will seek nurturing or emotional women) or people that can further their goals.

I think Chris and Adrian’s connection revolved around both of their violent tendencies, only Chris is not a sociopath, just an extremely emotionally damaged individual. When Peacemaker decides he’s done killing, Vigilante tries to convince him otherwise because he doesn’t understand how Chris doesn’t enjoy it like he does. Vig had no problem shooting that family, or knifing the cops, or almost killing the Vet staff. While I can understand why autistic people see themselves in the character, and Gunn could possibly see the character as neurodivergent, that level of violence and justification is not at all typical to autism.

James Gunn tweeted that Vig was confused because Peacemaker said he loved his dad, because he doesn’t understand that emotion. I do think he likes being part of the group and I do think we will see those bonds grow, but I also think the group gives him a reason to do what he does best, which is killing.

r282, Vigilante likes killing and others breaking the law gives him an excuse to do what he likes best. It's like early on with Dexter on the show Dexter. If you have the urge to kill, kill people who deserve it and call it an honor code. For such people, they feel very powerful by deciding who lives and who dies. Doctors don't want to admit it, but for many it's the same power rush. Same with nurses (angels of death). Not to mention soldiers, mercenaries, butchers / workers in the meat processing industry, animal farmers, etc.

A lot of us have come to terms that death is part of our life experience, and some are obsessed with it more than others.

I think its amazing that HBO allows Bill Maher to shit on whatever he wants--and how he went after John Cena. I like John Cena. I would still watch his show. I think what he did was gross and like that it was called out so that others in the future can consider NOT doing the same.
