Renee Zellweger criticised for wearing fat suit in new role: ‘It’s damaging, fatphobic and potentially triggering’

Renee Zellweger has been criticised for wearing a fat suit as she takes on the role of murderer Pam Hupp in her upcoming NBC series.

The decision has been branded ‘damaging, fatphobic, and potentially triggering to fat people,’ just weeks after Sarah Paulson also came under fire.

The Bridget Jones actress was spotted donning the suit on set for her upcoming NBC series The Thing About Pam.

She wore the suit under jeans and a puffer jacket, wearing her hair in a bob as she mirrored the killer’s look.

Oscar-winner Zellweger was also spotted holding a large drink from a fast-food restaurant and hopping into a car in more snaps.

Elsewhere, a crew member was pictured hauling the fat suit around on a hanger.

Plus-size writer Sarah Alexander told Metro.co.uk: ‘A fat suit has always been a way of mocking fat people no matter who wears it, even if it is for an acting role.

‘Actors that have previously worn them (Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Paulson) have admitted they regret their choice in wearing one and that it causes harm. There are plenty of incredibly talented plus-size actresses that could have been hired for the role instead of Zellweger. Why were they overlooked and a fat suit considered a viable option?

‘For Zellweger to masquerade as a plus-size person is damaging, fatphobic and potentially triggering to other plus-size people. It seems like she has not considered the effects this will have on fat people, and is unaware and/or naive that she is adding to the stigma fat people already face on a daily basis.’

The NBC true crime drama will follow Zellweger, 52, as Hupp, who is serving a life-sentence in prison.

In 2016, Hupp murdered Louis Gumpenberger, who had severe mental and physical impairments, shooting him in her home in Missouri.

Do you get two pairs of pants with it?

by Anonymousreply 1October 8, 2021 7:18 AM

hopefully it is so triggering to fatties that they decide to lose some weight!

by Anonymousreply 2October 8, 2021 7:21 AM

Plus-size writer Sarah Alexander

so her whole career is based on the fact that she is fat? If she lost weight she wouldn't have a career?

by Anonymousreply 3October 8, 2021 7:23 AM

Countdown to our Roxane chiming in in 3... 2...

by Anonymousreply 4October 8, 2021 7:33 AM

The correct response that I would kindly offer Zellweger (even if I share Carmella Soprano's dislike of the actress) is:

"Fuck off!"

by Anonymousreply 5October 8, 2021 8:33 AM

I do not want to hear about any more phobias. None. Except.

Ophidiophobia. That is the only phobia that counts in my book. The rest are bull shit.

by Anonymousreply 6October 8, 2021 8:41 AM

If the morbidly obese are liable to get their feelings hurt, why don’t they just fucking lose weight instead of getting upset about an actor trying to look a part?

by Anonymousreply 7October 8, 2021 8:47 AM

Fatphobic? Fatties triggered to do what? Eat their feelings to numb the pain?

by Anonymousreply 8October 8, 2021 8:48 AM

How the fuck does she have two Oscars?

by Anonymousreply 9October 8, 2021 8:49 AM

I’m glad fat people are triggered.

I think it’s hilarious that they sit around (and I do mean A-ROUND) squealing like the pigs they are as though somehow that will burn the calories.

by Anonymousreply 10October 8, 2021 8:56 AM

I really think this is getting out of hand. Actors are meant to transform themselves into the character they are playing, with their looks and their ACTING. To take this to the logical conclusion, you would say all actors are only ever allowed to play - essentially - themselves, which is fucking ridiculous.

Fatness is NOT the same as race or sexuality and while it would clearly be wrong for a white person to play Black, and it's becoming less acceptable for straight actors to play gay (which is more about the lack of opportunities given to gay actors) a thin person playing fat, ESPECIALLY when it's based on a real person like this and the Sarah Paulson example, is not fatphobic. What do they expect her to do, just ACT FAT!?

by Anonymousreply 11October 8, 2021 9:28 AM

She wore brunette wigs to play Judy, i see no difference

by Anonymousreply 12October 8, 2021 9:31 AM

The Ample Community is fed up!

by Anonymousreply 13October 8, 2021 9:33 AM

People are nuts!

Only Jews can play Jews Only fat can play fat Only gay can play gay Only tranny can play tranny

ACTING is pretending to be what you are not. Movies are not documentaries.

by Anonymousreply 14October 8, 2021 9:41 AM

Yep fatface is a thing now. Just like gayface and transface. Wokeness and progression are much more effective when they're not being forced or accelerated at such intensity and speed. Let it come slowly and gradually or else more people are going to be put off by it.

There's a difference between letting someone enjoy a drink and holding their mouth open and pouring it down their throat.

by Anonymousreply 15October 8, 2021 9:44 AM

Renee needs to do what all the other fucking pussies didn't do: NOTHING.

Fuck the Lin Manuel Vagina Mirandas of the world who have felt the need to apologize for the pathetic shit they've been attacked for ("NOT ENOUGH LATINX PEOPLE IN THE MOVIE WITH MY EXACT SKIN TONE!!!")

by Anonymousreply 16October 8, 2021 9:45 AM

R9 Something me dear G. that we can agree on.

by Anonymousreply 17October 8, 2021 9:46 AM

“Pon, get me the head of NBC on the phone and bring me the emergency snack purse!”

by Anonymousreply 18October 8, 2021 9:57 AM

Like I said this woke movement is happening at such a breakneck pace. Instead of educating people and getting them to be more tolerant it's going to have opposite effect and overwhelm them. While I wish it were possible, you can't make a homophobic or racist person change overnight. It's like trying to teach a class a whole new language in less than a week. It takes time to educate people.

by Anonymousreply 19October 8, 2021 9:58 AM

Noone should ever laugh again! It's triggering.

Humor undermines ideologies. This is very dangerous for extremists of any sort.

by Anonymousreply 20October 8, 2021 10:05 AM

So people would have been okay if she had done the "work" and gained 200 pounds naturally? Actors have put on weight for roles before, and it's not healthy or good for the body. How is that not disrespectful to the obese? If she had gotten fat for the role, people would be fine with that? How is getting fat on purpose less offensive than wearing a fat suit?

by Anonymousreply 21October 8, 2021 10:07 AM

R21 I generally agree with you - I don't think putting on weight for a role is ever a good idea for the impacts on health and there isn't much wrong with a 'fat suit' but there are plenty of good plus size actresses that could have played the role to and the overrated, over the hill Zellweger is simply not a good choice.

by Anonymousreply 22October 8, 2021 10:25 AM

Fat people hate that they can’t put on a skinny suit.

by Anonymousreply 23October 8, 2021 10:30 AM

[quote]What do they expect her to do, just ACT FAT!?

Gain weight. It's not like she didn't do it before for Bridget Jones. Plenty of actors like De Niro, D'Onofrio, Bale, and Ruffalo have all famously done it as well.

by Anonymousreply 24October 8, 2021 10:32 AM

Er, this is a biopic? Was the woman fat? I never heard of her.

Are they suggesting that a verifiably fat real person be portrayed as a slim one?

I mean, I'd understand the Short Men protesting at the 6'5" or whatever height over 6' Peter O'Toole was, getting the role of the 5'7" Lawrence (have the Shortphobic crowd twigged on to that yet and insisted the FCC film be cancelled?).

The thing about all this Stalinist approach to art is that eventually it breeds a very strong underground rebellion. The Victorian era produced some of the richest veins of pornography, Prohibition fueled speakeasies and a thriving business for organized crime . . . Look what it did for Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Whatever you label taboo becomes haloed with desire.

I understand they're trying to cancel Beethoven.

I can see it now: rebel chamber groups making a fortune playing the Razoumovsky quartets clandestinely in spaces fronting as funeral homes.

by Anonymousreply 25October 8, 2021 10:33 AM

Chaos, we were talking about this very thing today at work, and how you can't lecture and force people into things, but by exposure, having people see you as a real person, not just an identity. It does suck in some ways, like people really should just be accepting and pleasant to each other, but it really seems like if you lecture people too much too quickly, it can only turn people off.

Gay rights happened in my country because we made ourselves visible as your children, your friends, your family. We should've always had rights, but unfortunately we didn't and scolding people certainly doesn't seem to be the answer. Also holding strength in yourself without scolding is a good skill to develop.

by Anonymousreply 26October 8, 2021 10:54 AM

"This might hurt feelings" = scolding SJW wokeness that is ruining the world

"Fat people should just fucking lose weight and stop being triggered fatties who squeal like pigs" = just normal, good, common sense replies to a complicated situation

by Anonymousreply 27October 8, 2021 11:05 AM

When an actor plays Santa Claus are they fat shaming?

by Anonymousreply 28October 8, 2021 11:35 AM

Roseanne said it best. "If your fat, just be fat and shut up. If your skinny, fuck you. People who scream fat shaming are deluded to think that being fat is medically sound. And I am overweight myself!!

by Anonymousreply 29October 8, 2021 1:26 PM

fucking hilarious. fat people are the most damaged people around. we should all feel so sorry for them when they alone can change themselves. sorry sweetheart, get the fuck over yourself. it's called acting.

by Anonymousreply 30October 8, 2021 5:21 PM

I seem to recall that Zellweger's weight gain and subsequent loss for the first Bridget Jones movie was harmful to her health, so I can see why she wouldn't want to do it anymore. She's also a recent Best Actress Oscar winner so she's clearly widely respected in the industry for her ability so I don't think the argument that they shouldn't cast her because she isn't a good actor doesn't hold much weight. (pun not intended)

by Anonymousreply 31October 8, 2021 6:26 PM

Because I'm Hollywood royalty, nobody dared criticize me when I donned a "fat suit." Poor Renee!

by Anonymousreply 32October 8, 2021 7:09 PM

R31 plus the higher hospitalization and death rate among fat people

by Anonymousreply 33October 8, 2021 7:13 PM

Leave Renee alone. She is a national treasure.

by Anonymousreply 34October 8, 2021 7:14 PM

It’s ridiculous and unnecessary to wear a fat suit. Actors often play real people that are quite different physically. Kristen Stewart is currently playing Princess Di, who was a good five or six inches taller than Stewart. And Di was one of the world’s most famous women: who the hell knows or cares what this woman weighed?

by Anonymousreply 35October 8, 2021 7:16 PM

OP- She should be criticized for her MEDIOCRE acting.

by Anonymousreply 36October 8, 2021 7:17 PM

[quote]She's also a recent Best Actress Oscar winner so she's clearly widely respected in the industry for her ability so I don't think the argument that they shouldn't cast her because she isn't a good actor doesn't hold much weight

So you're looking at the extremely made-up Renee in OP's photo and think, there's absolutely no other actress in the English speaking world who could play the part of an overweight middle aged white American. Renee in a fat suit and face prosthetics is the one!

Let's dispense with this drivel about 'ability' and face the facts. This got greenlit straight to series because it's headlined by a 'movie star'. Said movie star is also executive producing. Haven't we seen these moves by Kidman, Witherspoon, Aniston etc. already?

by Anonymousreply 37October 8, 2021 10:35 PM

[QUOTE] think, there's absolutely no other actress in the English speaking world who could play the part of an overweight middle aged white America

Yes, bitch.

by Anonymousreply 38October 8, 2021 10:42 PM

After she destroyed her real face with unnecessary plastic surgery, she should be given a pass for the fat suit.

by Anonymousreply 39October 8, 2021 11:56 PM

Speaking of faces, what about actors who wear prosthetic noses for roles? Don't actors who wear fake noses to portray a big-nosed character fit the same category as people who wear fat suits?

by Anonymousreply 40October 8, 2021 11:58 PM

"There are plenty of incredibly talented plus-size actresses that could have been hired for the role instead of Zellweger."

Are there really? This is not an independent film. It is a multi-million dollar corporate investment. There are few enough stars I am interested in, leave Renee alone.

by Anonymousreply 41October 9, 2021 12:35 AM

She's so shallow.

by Anonymousreply 42October 9, 2021 12:39 AM

I’m glad I’m old.

by Anonymousreply 43October 9, 2021 12:46 AM

I'm triggered, but not by the fat suit.

by Anonymousreply 44October 9, 2021 12:52 AM

As a fat womon, though, would she be useful on garbage detail?

by Anonymousreply 45October 9, 2021 3:49 AM

[quote]It is a multi-million dollar corporate investment.

Oh please, it's a TV mini.

[quote]Don't actors who wear fake noses to portray a big-nosed character fit the same category as people who wear fat suits?

Renee covers all bases here.

At least the face prosthetics will spare us the need to look at the fillers. I got enough of that already with Ms Kidman on her TV shows.

by Anonymousreply 46October 9, 2021 4:48 AM

Am I no longer allowed to type fat?

by Anonymousreply 47October 11, 2021 5:01 AM

I know a lot of gay men and DLers hate fat people with a passion usually reserved for baby rapists, but be reasonable, they couldn't find ONE overweight actress to play the part??? There is no shortage of fat women in the US, this is just dumb. And I say this as someone who has no patience for people and their "triggers"

by Anonymousreply 48October 11, 2021 5:22 AM

There aren’t that many bankable fat actresses.

by Anonymousreply 49October 11, 2021 5:45 AM

I don't think a lot of fat women go into acting for whatever (obvious) reasons. Same with the discussion regarding mentally disabled people people playing mentally disabled people. How many retarded or noticeably autistic actors are there?

Sigh, R51...

by Anonymousreply 52October 11, 2021 11:01 AM

Nobody goes to see movies where the actress wears a fat suit. This will NOT help her career. If it’s a man wearing a female fat suit, that’s mockery (Eddie Murphy etc...) and that goes over. Not the female fat suit though...

by Anonymousreply 53October 11, 2021 12:42 PM

[quote]Plus-size writer Sarah Alexander ... so her whole career is based on the fact that she is fat? If she lost weight she wouldn't have a career?

Bitch stole my gig!

by Anonymousreply 54October 11, 2021 12:48 PM

Her fat suit body is a lot of fat bitches goal weight.
