Lena Dunham Shames You All For Your Fat Shaming

Lena Dunham is speaking out against the body-shamers who criticized her appearance after sharing photos from her wedding to Luis Felber.

The former “Girls” star shared a smiley selfie to Instagram on Wednesday and called out the “gnarly” comments she’s read on her feed, which reminded her why she used to put up a divide between her and the internet.

“It’s a little too easy to feel the glow of support and forget about the cesspool lurking behind it- so I took a peek, and saw some gnarly s–t, most not worth responding to or even sharing with you,” she wrote alongside the photo.

“But one narrative I take issue with, largely because it’s a story I don’t want other women, other people, to get lodged in their heads is that I should somehow be ashamed because my body has changed.”

Dunham, 35, opened up about her weight gain since she was “last on television” — when she was also criticized for putting her nude body on TV — and claimed someone sarcastically asked, “Did Lena eat the cast of Girls,” a joke she felt wasn’t “very good.”

“Secondly, it’s ironic to have my body compared to a body that was also the subject of public scorn- an echo chamber of body shaming,” she continued. “But lastly, when will we learn to stop equating thinness with health/happiness? Of course weight loss can be the result of positive change in habits, but guess what? So can weight gain.”

The “Tiny Furniture” star said her body of years past is one that grappled with eating disorders, addiction and undiagnosed illnesses, and now that she’s four years sober from abusing the anti-anxiety drug Klonopin, she “aspires toward health and not just achievement.”

“These changes have allowed me to be the kind of sister/friend/daughter that I want to be and yes- meet my husband (who, by the way, doesn’t recognize me in those old photos because he sees how dimmed my light was),” she explained.

Dunham received plenty of praise for her openness and vulnerability, including from her new husband, who commented, “My wife ❤️❤️❤️.”

Dunham and Felber, who goes by the name Attawalpa professionally, married in early September in London. Page Six was the first to report that the couple were dating in early June; Dunham confirmed their relationship a few days later, calling herself “the luckiest.”

Are we just to support her in everything, whether she gains weight or loses weight? It's apparently all good so long as it's affirming, because what really matters is that she be [italic]affirmed[/italic] in everything she does, even if the two things are diametrically opposed to one another.

Why was her light so dim when she was younger, thinner, prettier and getting lots of press and praise for Tiny Furniture and Girls? To me it seems her light was brighter then. Now, her eyes are cloudy and stuck deep in her face. Her career is writing about her ailments on Instagram. So…dim.
