Dubbing vs. subtitles

I've noticed that Netflix seems to have some sort of "smart" technology when it comes to dubbing vs. subtitles.

If you watch a movie or two with dubbing, it will from then on default to the dubbed version.

I'm pretty sure just about all of their movies have an original-language-with-subtitles option, you just have to go in and choose it. After watching a few movies with subtitles, it will probably start defaulting to the subtitles.

The technology is actually pretty impressive, as I watch movies from different countries differently.

Anything from Mexico, I watch in Spanish, without subtitles.

From Spain and Argentina, I watch in Spanish, but with Spanish subtitles. (I understand most everything, but sometimes a word or phrase escapes me, so the subtitles help)

If it's from Brazil or Portugal, I watch in Portuguese, with Portuguese subtitles.

Everything else (Italy, France, etc.) I watch in the original language, with English subtitles.

Over time, Netflix technology seems to have incorporated all of these preferences, and automatically defaults to them. It's pretty impressive.

When I was younger I used to prefer subtitles, especially with anime. But that was at a time when dubs of anime were "dumbed down" and changed for English-speaking audiences. Now that dubs are much more faithfully translated, I usually just opt for the dubbed. It's easier.

I've noticed the opposite. They had all the seasons of The House of Flowers dubbed, but for some reason not The House of Flowers: The Movie, at least not the last time I checked.

Look, if it is some great "artistic" film, I might read subtitles. But, not for regular stuff, just give me the dub.
