This kind of thing always comes down to: did everyone have the same opportunity to be seen and cast and was there discrimination when it came to hiring people?

This sort of anti-Semitism can be traced all the way back to the Golden Age of the Hollywood Studios which were all run by Jewish immigrants who were uncomfortable, if not disgusted, by portraying real Jewish life onscreen. LB Mayer, Jesse Lasky, Sam Goldwyn, the Warner Brothers, Irving Thalberg, David O. Selznick, Harry Cohn, the names go on and on....plus most of the men who worked directly under these producers.

The only exception to these moguls was gentile Darryl Zanuck, who ran 20th Century Fox and produced and won Oscars for Gentlemen's Agreement in 1947 at a time when none of the other studios would touch the property, which was a fictional expose about anti-Semitism (rampant after WWII) even though it was a huge bestselling novel.

I can't think of a single Hollywood star of those decades, contracted by those men, who was allowed or encouraged to keep their real name if it sounded remotely Jewish. And even the first Hollywood stars with a true "Jewish look" like Dustin Hoffman and Elliott Gould had names that were just neutral enough (and Elliott's real last name was Goldstein) to not distract.

I bring this up because even though there's still the persistent notion that "the Jews run Hollywood" those same Jews were never particularly eager to put their people in the limelight without de-Jewing them to some degree.

This is a perfect example of great casting despite the actress not being the same ethnicity as the character (i.e., what used to be called "acting".) Suzanne in Postcards was not portraying Carrie Fisher herself. Suzanne Vale was a fictional character with no ethnicity that was revealed.

The character of Sophie was NOT Jewish, neither in the novel or the movie. She was a Polish Catholic.

As for Heartburn and Adaptation, neither character was defined by their Jewishness. They just happened to be based on real life women who were Jewish, but it was not a central part of their character or the story (in fact it was not ANY part, central or otherwise.)

Experience informs the performance. Think back a year ago when It's a Sin came out, and Russell T. Davies talked about casting gays as the gay characters. There was a long thread on it, and some people commented that gay actors would bring more to the part. They've experienced the usual milestones and roadblocks of gay life. Bullying and harassment. The coming out process. Job discrimination. Being told over and over again that you can't do this or that because you're too fem, butch, gay etc. and having to work even harder to get ahead than your straight peers. That's why It's a Sin was so good. The performances came from that place. Sure, straight guys can act their asses off, but they don't "get" what being gay is like.

By the way, to some previous posters, "Jewish" is not just a religion. It can also be an ethnicity, a culture you grew up in, and the way you live your life every day. If a Catholic actor doesn't do their research into a Jewish character and their culture, they may miss something big. For instance, the Jewish experience of god is different from the Catholic experience. The Catholic church teaches kids at a young age that there are intermediaries they must go through (prayers, confession, clergy, regular church attendance, communion) in order to reach God. Jewish philosophy is much different, and god is much more immediate and internal. I am NOT saying either is bad. I am saying....experience informs the performance.
