This show was such a unicorn. Because they were based out of Toronto, their corporate overlords from HBO weren't flying in from LA very often to check up on them. It's a miracle that they got away with half the shit they got away with.

It's nice to see Dave Foley has really consistently worked. Obviously NewsRadio was the height but always 3 known projects a year practically

The drag routines that Kids In The Hall did are 100x more funny and entertaining that the drag clown shows that gays like to put on.

They weren't drag routines. They were men playing female characters in a setting.

Scott Thompson was so ahead of his time that after Kids in the Hall, he was self-producing Internet video clips back in 1995 - he did a series as Queen Elizabeth. It's a curse to be 10 years ahead of your time.

This is a fabulous interview with Scott. It's a few years old now, but still very relevant. A must-listen for any fan of Scott or The Kids.

Regarding the female characters, I would argue that there's definitely a drag element in that they're parodying women, not just playing them. Those office girls, the aforementioned FF, so many others.

I was an extra on the set of the Kids in the Hall movie Brain Candy which, of course, was shot in Toronto. The film was a flop but Paramount didn't know how to market it. I really liked the film but it just wasn't going to have the appeal of, say, Wayne's World.

Brain Candy was released at the exact time when being hooked on pharmaceutical drugs became common

A lot of people were surprised to see Mark McKinney show up on SNL for a little while, Dave Foley in random sitcoms, Kevin McDonald in a small guest spot on Friends.

It seemed like they would have had more success together and separately.

They were too ahead of their time for their own good.

It's interesting that Scott Thompson was not mentioned at all with Ellen's major Time magazine / sitcom coming-out promo tie-in, and rarely since in the gay characters onscreen narrative

As a Canadian gay teen this was the only exposure I had to anything remotely gay. The fact that they were Canadian for some reason just blew my mind. I genuinely miss those more innocent times.
