Scott Thompson on "The Kids in the Hall" was the first openly gay comedic actor I remember where his gayness wasn't the whole joke, and he doesn't get enough credit for it.
Did you watch "The Kids in the Hall"?

I watched episodes on Comedy Central years ago. A couple of days ago, I saw that most of the episodes are available on AMC+
by Anonymous | reply 2 | October 4, 2021 4:05 AM |
Scott deserves more credit.

Scott doing Buddy Cole's monologue on Andrew Dice Clay and Eddie Murphy as rough trade is HYSTERICAL. Starts at 3:14 in this link. Unfortunately, I don't think a bit like this would see the light of day today. ("...I'm not saying they're GAY...")

Dave: So you're not from Toronto?
Chicken Lady: No, just moved here, come on in!
Dave: What are you?
Chicken Lady: Gee you're not too bright. I'm a Chicken Lady. And I love life, do you love life?
Dave: Yeah.
Chicken Lady: Good, 'cos I put that in my Personal. "Chicken Lady Loves Life!"
Dave: Chicken Lady? I never took that literally.

I would have watched it but I was too busy thinking about Tony, wondering where he could be, who he is with, what is he thinking, is he thinking of me, and whether he'll ever return someday.

This show was such a unicorn. Because they were based out of Toronto, their corporate overlords from HBO weren't flying in from LA very often to check up on them. It's a miracle that they got away with half the shit they got away with.

It's nice to see Dave Foley has really consistently worked. Obviously NewsRadio was the height but always 3 known projects a year practically
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 4, 2021 8:44 PM |
R23 he needs to keep working because his ex-wife is bleeding his bank account dry.

The drag routines that Kids In The Hall did are 100x more funny and entertaining that the drag clown shows that gays like to put on.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | October 4, 2021 8:49 PM |
They weren't drag routines. They were men playing female characters in a setting.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 4, 2021 9:03 PM |
Scott Thompson was so ahead of his time that after Kids in the Hall, he was self-producing Internet video clips back in 1995 - he did a series as Queen Elizabeth. It's a curse to be 10 years ahead of your time.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | October 4, 2021 9:06 PM |
This is a fabulous interview with Scott. It's a few years old now, but still very relevant. A must-listen for any fan of Scott or The Kids.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | October 4, 2021 9:38 PM |
I love Francesca Fiore.
Regarding the female characters, I would argue that there's definitely a drag element in that they're parodying women, not just playing them. Those office girls, the aforementioned FF, so many others.

R26. That’s fucking drag.

I was an extra on the set of the Kids in the Hall movie Brain Candy which, of course, was shot in Toronto. The film was a flop but Paramount didn't know how to market it. I really liked the film but it just wasn't going to have the appeal of, say, Wayne's World.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | October 5, 2021 2:35 AM |
Brain Candy was released at the exact time when being hooked on pharmaceutical drugs became common
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 5, 2021 2:37 AM |
This seemed like the edgiest show on TV when it would come on late at night - sometimes after midnight
by Anonymous | reply 44 | October 5, 2021 2:44 AM |
I thought they were all gay when I used to watch on HBO in the 90s. I'm still kind of surprised that Scott Thompson is the only out gay member.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 5, 2021 2:51 AM |

They all aged terribly, except for Scott Thompson, who has aged like a normal person. The others all aged like alcoholics who smoke.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 6, 2021 4:47 AM |
Dave Foley has aged the worst imo. Did his child support issues with his ex get resolved since he's now able to get back to Canada?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 6, 2021 4:49 AM |
A lot of people were surprised to see Mark McKinney show up on SNL for a little while, Dave Foley in random sitcoms, Kevin McDonald in a small guest spot on Friends.
It seemed like they would have had more success together and separately.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | October 6, 2021 5:00 AM |
They were too ahead of their time for their own good.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | October 6, 2021 5:24 AM |
It's interesting that Scott Thompson was not mentioned at all with Ellen's major Time magazine / sitcom coming-out promo tie-in, and rarely since in the gay characters onscreen narrative
by Anonymous | reply 57 | October 6, 2021 5:28 AM |
SNL is too much of a straight boys' club for Kids in the Hall humor to go over well
by Anonymous | reply 58 | October 6, 2021 5:35 AM |
News Radio wasn’t a random sitcom.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 6, 2021 12:57 PM |
How did Lorne Michaels screw them over? He's the inspiration for the evil CEO in Brain Candy so I assume he fucked them like he does everyone else
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 6, 2021 1:14 PM |
Dave Foley made the prettiest woman.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | October 6, 2021 3:03 PM |

As a Canadian gay teen this was the only exposure I had to anything remotely gay. The fact that they were Canadian for some reason just blew my mind. I genuinely miss those more innocent times.

r72 How did it go?
by Anonymous | reply 73 | October 24, 2021 3:02 AM |
Quotes from KITH used to fall out of my skull daily at my first real office job, when the episodes were still running on TV. My old friend who I met at that job (both of us started as temps around the same time), who would join in with me every time I'd drop the quotes into our workday. He died a few years ago, and I miss him. Decades later, I still feel like he should be in the next cubicle smirking along with me...
Temp!
