Old ladies loved Liberace. He was much more sedate before vegas. Later on, he was sort of a fixture and people just accepted him. I think most people knew he was gay except the old ladies he was always fawning over. I remember people used to joke about his old lady fans.

I actually met him once, in a public setting. He was 'on', performing much like his stage personality, charming, amusing, willingly signing autographs. As for the gay factor, he was so gay that he almost seemed to bend back right around the circle to straight again. His fans viewed him as non-threatening, living a kind of fairy-tale existence that they knew they would never have.

I don't think him even being 'gay' ever crossed most peoples mind back then.

People were not obsessed with whether somebody was gay or not and a lot of that had with it being so taboo and simply not talked about.

It was talked about plenty---just in rather hushed tones. His flamboyance made him non-threatening. He was the son who never left his mother and played schmaltzy sentimental arrangements of recognizable music---perfect for the blue rinse set.

Talk about Liberace wasn't that hushed, it was in tabloids, critics lightly referred to it in reviews for Sincerely Yours and his stage shows.

I don’t think he was above alluding to it himself, essentially wagging his finger at the “accusations” in the papers and very condescendingly condemning them for daring to suggest such things
