How old is Barbara Broccoli? Damn. So let's say it takes about 3 years to write and produce a Bond film. Over ten years you'd get three possibly four movies at most. You can't have them coming out too close together. That's quite a commitment.

Thus far we've had a Scottish Bond (Connery), an Australian Bond (Lazenby), an Irish Bond (Brosnan), and three English Bonds (Moore, Craig, and Dalton).

The only issue with Page is the Asian market. They love their white protagonists there, and that's a major consideration for any franchise.

Bond will remain you typical British white Caucasian.

This was discussed and making him another ethnicity was rejected.

It was felt audiences would not accept him if he were made of African or Asian descent or female for that matter.

I think it would be good to reboot the franchise with a young Bond. Show us his teen years and college days.

I think Bond shouldn't be **too** handsome, actually. Many of the ideas here are fantastic, but some are so conventionally pretty, like Cavill and the like. That's why I think Hardy is a great choice. Sexy and rugged--physical. A physical actor with toughness and sexiness, and not too pretty. I'd look for an actor with a very good resume but who isn't too famous yet--similar to where Craig was when he got it. (So Hardy might be too famous, esp after Venom.) It's a fun game to try and figure it out!

Hardy has already hit the wall. You can tell DLers are mostly over 40 with some of the names suggested here.

you know who was shorter than I expected? Harrison Ford. I always expected him to be tall, and he was average. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda were a lot shorter than expected.

Most male actors are on the short side, which is why the genuinely tall ones stick out so much. David Tennant, who is tall but not freak tall (6'1), has said that people are always surprised by his height in person.

Lee Pace's height must be a real liability. At 6'5, the only actresses he'd frame well with are Gwen Christie and Elizabeth Debicki.

I still think Hoult's got a chance. He's only 32, which would leave him plenty of time even if the first film didn't start shooting until 2023. He's had a series of girlfriends and fathered a child with his current one, so heterosexual cred is established. He was in the X-Men films but only as a supporting role, and nobody will care at this point that he played Beast. He's currently in The Great, but that's a small series and will likely end in another season or so. He's a good actor with great light comic timing, and women love him. He's perfect.

The problem I have with Hoult, and I really do like him, is that he seems to not have that sort of seething sex appeal that James Bond has.

Very few actors have the personal heft Bond requires and the particular suave that Bond requires. Madden will never get it. He blew his chances a while back. Gayness has nothing to do it. He's just too much of a luvvie. And whoever plays Bond has to do a shitload of marketing. The single greatest criticism of Craig's Bond is that it's been too serious: I suspect the next Bond will be written as more playful as per the Marvel series. It certainly needs to lighten up. Killing him in No Time To Die was a betrayal of the character.

The only non-controversial choice at the moment would be Tom Hardy, but he's getting on in years, which is always a problem when you're looking at, say, a ten or even fifteen year stretch. People would grumble, as they always grumble when Bond is chosen, but he could perhaps pull it off. But perhaps wouldn't want it. It's a terrible big responsibility.

There is no way in hell the Bond franchise will pick the guy who plays Venom right now. They will rather go with a "blank slate" than someone whose past big blockbuster roles may overshadow the Bond franchise. Apart from Venom he also played Bane in the Christopher Nolan Batman franchise.

I would be incredibly surprised if the Bond producers go for any guy who had a flashy leading role in a blockbuster franchise in recent years. Even someone like Matt Smith, who played the iconic Doctor Who many years ago, would be a total shock to me.

Also, some suggest actors who are attached to TV shows which are still filming and releasing new seasons. No way would the Bond producers be ok with working around some TV show's schedule. Craig was only able to do and commit to Knives Out, because they made sure it wouldn't interfere with anything Bond related (including PR promotion). Bond would have to come first. And, like in Pierce Brosnan's case, it's not like TV shows are happy to let go guys to do greater things even though they still are under contract.

Rege-Jean Page is going be in the reboot of The Saint (not sure if it's movie or tv series) so Bond may be out the window.

It's kind of amazing that an international behemoth like the James Bond franchise is run like a family operation.

Fleming picked the right people to bring his creation to the screen. And they’ve handled it with dignity and respect and kid gloves, a dollop of class, and a shrewd eye and clever marketing; the movies generally live up to the hype — there’s always something fresh yet consistent to see in a James Bond picture.

This is a typical male franchise that women are attracted to. You do want a straight female perspective on the actor's ability to attract that audience. Like Daniel Craig - kinda ugly in a Bronson way - but very sexually attractive. Beta males are not wanted.

At 43 short-arse Cooper would be a year older than Brosnan when he took the role. But I can't say I wouldn't be on-board. I like Cooper and he has suave and debonair down pat.

R380, I was referring to an actor doing a TV show concurrently with Bond; Moore had already completed The Persuaders when he was hired for Live and Let Die; and the reason Brosnan didn't get Bond in 1986 was because NBC changed their mind about cancelling Remington Steele when it was leaked that Broccoli wanted Brosnan - but only if the show was done.

R383 I don't think the fact that an actor has been on a TV show dilutes the Bond mystique though, and I don't think the Broccolis think that, either. But... I think they're inclined to hire actors who don't have star stamped on their names. So, no Cavill, or Hardy, or Fassbender, or Bloom or anyone of that magnitude. And in the age of Marvel, I doubt they'll hire someone who's been playing a superhero for the last 10 years.

R384, again, I am specifically referring to appearing on a series at the same time he's playing Bond. That's the dealbreaker, not having done one in the past.

Roger Moore was the absolute worst. Timothy Dalton actually wasn't bad but the movie he was in was shit.

Del Toro was a real find, though.

Moonraker was the nadir but the one with Grace Jones was pretty awful, too.

Taron Eggerton was talking up Madden for the role on talk shows a couple years ago. The producers might have gotten it into their heads that they could use that connection to talk Elton John into buying tickets for the vast horde of twinks orbiting around him.

I'm not so sure that issues about being on a TV show recently matter anymore. The whole industry has changed with streaming and all. It might matter if someone is too identified with a specific similar character. That is, alpha male in some kind of procedural (police or spy). Or maybe not.

You have had the Bourne series, and of course John Wick, and Tom Cruise MI series, and other action stars, and Bond has competition now that didn't exist when it belonged to Sean Connery, Roger Moore or Pierce Brosnan. So Bond has to be interesting, unconventional. Smart. Daniel Craig did that. His successor will have to do even more, so they have to be someone that can build on and move the franchise forward.

Someone mentioned Bale: way too old, he's turning 48 in a few weeks and looks every bit of it. Too brooding, plus he's insulted the role in interviews in the past. McQuarrie did wonders with Henry in the MI films and they got on very well.

Brosnan has charm. He has some range. Cavill has none.
