British tabloids slam Harry and Meghan's NY visit, while celebrating William and Kate for doing the same things

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in New York City for their first in-person engagements since they welcomed their daughter, Lili, in June.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in New York for the charity concert Global Citizen Live on Saturday, at which they plan to promote vaccine equity, Vanity Fair reported.

They arrived on Wednesday, before making an appearance at the One World Observatory on Thursday morning, as Insider previously reported.

Harry and Markle have been in New York City for less than 24 hours, but multiple British tabloids have already taken issue with their trip.

For example, the Daily Mail criticized the couple for having cocktails on Wednesday night and for not bringing Archie and Lili with them to New York.

The Daily Mail also questioned Markle's outerwear for her visit to One World and criticized how much jewelry she was wearing during her visit to the observatory.

Likewise, The Scottish Sun implied that it was "embarrassing" that the couple was treating their visit like a royal tour, and The Mirror featured a body-language expert who said Markle and Harry seemed anxious at their appearances, even though they were affectionate and smiling at each other throughout the morning.

The coverage is markedly different from the way many of the same outlets wrote about Prince William and Kate Middleton's 2014 trip to New York City, even though the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge did some of the same things as Markle and Harry.

For instance, multiple British tabloids celebrated Middleton's decision to wear a pink coat during her visit to the 9/11 memorial.

The Daily Mail said she was "fighting off the gloomy weather" with the garment, and the Daily Express named the coat one of her best outfits of 2014.

The same outlets criticized Markle and Harry for wearing black to their visit to the 9/11 museum, even though it's quite common to wear black to memorial sites.

The Daily Express amplified tweets that questioned the couple's dark clothing. In one of its headlines, the Daily Mail asked if Markle forgot to check the weather because she wore a coat in 80-degree weather.

Similarly, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are staying at the Carlyle Hotel, Page Six reported, where William and Middleton stayed during their 2014 visit.

At the time, the Daily Mail wrote: "Kate lands with a bump: Pregnant Duchess arrives at New York hotel favored by Diana as royal couple touch down in the Big Apple," focusing on Middleton's pregnancy and Princess Diana's love of the hotel in its headline.

But when writing about Markle and Harry staying at the same hotel, the Daily Mail titled its article: "Royal couple leave the kids in LA to enjoy drinks at swanky bar inside their $1,300-a-night Carlyle Hotel to kick-start three-day visit to NYC," spotlighting the hotel's price instead of its connection to Princess Diana.

The latter also framed Harry and Markle's trip as a kids-free getaway, even though William and Middleton did not bring Prince George with them on their 2014 trip.

The New York visit isn't the first instance in which the British press has criticized Markle for the same things Middleton does, such as breaking royal protocol with shoes or requesting that people not take photos of her.

Most recently, people criticized the British tabloids for their sexist reactions to Markle and Harry's Time 100 cover.

Representatives for the Daily Mail, the Daily Express, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and Prince William and Kate Middleton did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

People really need to stop the comparisons between Kate and Meghan. It's like comparing Buckingham Palace and the La Brea Tar Pits.

It's obvious that the UK tabloids hate Meghan.

Good thing she got the fuck out of there.

[quote] A Royal Biographer Says Will and Kate Didn't Treat Harry and Meghan *Great* Before the Royal Feud Started

When it comes to the feud between the royals formerly known as the Fab Four (Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle), people generally fall into one of two camps—those who are beyond sick of hearing about the whole situation to the point that they get cluster headaches at the mere mention of the word "feud" and those who, while also sick of hearing about it on one level, can't seem to shake a weird fascination with it, either.

If you're in the first group, please feel free to leave now because what follows is definitely royal feud-related. If you're in the second group, take a deep breath and keep scrolling.

The latest bit of expert insight into the breakdown of William and Harry's relationship comes courtesy of Andrew Morton, author of multiple royal books, most famously the Princess Diana biography, Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words.

Morton also penned a Meghan biography, Meghan: A Hollywood Princess, which was originally published in 2018 and is now getting an update in the form of six new chapters. In those new chapters, Morton digs into the origins of William and Harry's infamous feud and the impact it's had on Meghan, as well.

According to excepts published by The Mirror, Morton makes it clear that, in spite of reports to the contrary (including accounts Harry and Meghan shared themselves during their interview with Oprah Winfrey earlier this year), it's his understanding that the Palace made Meghan's wellbeing a priority.

"Far from abandoning Meghan, the Palace had a team which spent ‘hundreds of hours monitoring social media accounts' and ‘violent threats were reported to the police," he wrote.

Morton did, however, report that Will and Kate's attitudes toward Meghan and Harry were a big factor in the brothers' feud and, by extension, the Sussexes' eventual decision to step away from royal life.

"The Duchess of Cambridge’s coolness towards Meghan, and William’s alleged bullying contributed to a devastating 'Cain and Abel' fallout between the brothers," Morton wrote. "Harry was the 'prime mover' in souring relations between the Sussexes and the Royal Family, but it was Meghan who ‘took the hit.'"

This isn't the first time claims have surfaced about William allegedly bullying Harry and Meghan. In January 2020, shortly after Harry and Meghan announced their decision to step back from royal duties, the Sunday Times reported that the Sussexes had been "pushed away from the royal family by the 'bullying' attitude of his brother the Duke of Cambridge" and quoted a source who said the couple decided on their royal exit after two years of "constantly being told their place."

The royal family immediately shut down the rumors, with Harry and William even going so far as to issue a rare joint statement decrying them.

"Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the Duke of Cambridge," they said in the joint statement. "For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful."

It's not clear from the excerpts who Morton's sources are for the new chapters or if there's any new evidence or information that warrants revisiting the bullying claims, but that's what's new in the world of Overanalyzing the Royal Feud. Consider your daily royal gossip update complete.

They're not alone, though, are they, R2?

by Anonymousreply 4September 28, 2021 1:29 AM

I see that they’ve backtracked from “Lilibet” and are now calling their daughter “Lili.”

Harry and Meghan are nobodies here. They quit. Neither has worked for almost two years. Why would anyone report on them or listen to them? They have no credentials.

by Anonymousreply 7September 28, 2021 3:17 AM

R7 saying doesn't make it true!

And yes the DM especially has been nothing but constant negative stories about the Sussexes since even before the lawsuit. I usually try to avoid the trash rag but went there for a specific article a few days ago someone had linked and then went to the home page, and top story is Harry and Meghan, as nastily written as possible, followed by at least twelve other stories from the last week, all overtly negative.

They're relentless and shameless and I'd wager that a good part of the Meghan hatred in the UK flows directly from that source. And I'll bet you anything that the Palace still leaks stories about them in order to protect Wills and Kate, which is part of the reason H&M said "see ya!" and stopped informing the palace of anything.

by Anonymousreply 8September 28, 2021 3:34 AM

My God, you're incredibly deluded r8. Anyone with an ounce of perception could see right through her from the start.

by Anonymousreply 9September 28, 2021 4:16 AM

Is it really bullying if William became incensed at strong reports of MM's abusiveness to Palace employees?

by Anonymousreply 10September 28, 2021 9:51 AM

R9 You're obsessed and should get some therapy. It's not healthy.

R10 oh, please.

I see the Markle haters have taken over the thread. Enjoy your echo chamber, losers.

by Anonymousreply 11September 28, 2021 3:02 PM

Don’t worry. News 4 New York (WNBC) called their trip “a Royal visit”.

So someone bought it. Or, rather, it was bought.

by Anonymousreply 12September 28, 2021 4:45 PM

Because, duh, William and Kate ARE actual working royals whose job it is to do those things, whilst Meghan and Harry are trying to LOOK line they are real working royals, but aren't.

That's the difference, Pet, dear.

The Cambridges are the real thing, and the Sussexes are just second-hand wannabes, but with ugly clothes, bad hair, and a pathetic eunuch instead of an alpha male.
