Paul Thomas Anderson's Licorice Pizza

God, this looks like something Lens would have produced.

by Anonymousreply 3September 27, 2021 6:24 PM

Well, I don't think you can judge a PTA film by its trailer, but this looks intriguing to me.

by Anonymousreply 4September 27, 2021 6:26 PM

Looks awful. Full of homely people, including Bradley Cooper in a ratty wig.

by Anonymousreply 5September 27, 2021 7:55 PM

A woman judging the viewer in the profile pic is SO going to entice viewers....

by Anonymousreply 6September 27, 2021 8:12 PM

People so staggeringly insecure that they feel judged by a woman in a photo shouldn't be leaving the house, let alone going to a movie.

by Anonymousreply 7September 27, 2021 8:19 PM

The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman's son; James Gandolfini's son was obviously busy.

by Anonymousreply 8September 27, 2021 8:24 PM

I’ll go see it I love Boogie Nights and Magnolia

by Anonymousreply 9September 27, 2021 8:59 PM

PTA really went for weird in the beautifully shot but strange film "Phantom Thread." This one looks boring, weird AND ugly.

by Anonymousreply 10September 27, 2021 9:49 PM

Hoffman's son is bland onscreen. Got his DNA from mom.

by Anonymousreply 11September 28, 2021 12:00 AM

Too many fugs.

by Anonymousreply 12September 28, 2021 12:13 AM

Maybe he can hire William H. Macy's kids when they're done with college.

by Anonymousreply 13September 28, 2021 12:15 AM

I'll see it if it gets good reviews. I found it hard to forgive him for Magnolia.

by Anonymousreply 14September 28, 2021 4:10 AM

I wouldn’t say the girl is ugly. She’s not glammed up at all but she’s interesting looking.

by Anonymousreply 15September 28, 2021 4:15 AM

Is that Adam Driver's sister?

by Anonymousreply 16September 28, 2021 4:18 AM

I don’t know why I was under that impression that MGM doesn’t exist anymore.

That Bowie song is fucking annoying as hell. Ugh.

by Anonymousreply 17September 28, 2021 4:26 AM

Forgot to add: the movie does not look good at all. I love Boogie Nights —owned it on deluxe Laserdisc and now blu ray— but have never been interested in anything else the very handsome PTA has done. (Including his relationship with the dreary and tiresome Fiona Apple, which is utterly irrelevant.)

by Anonymousreply 18September 28, 2021 4:29 AM

[quote] This one looks boring, weird AND ugly.

But enough about you, Fiona.

by Anonymousreply 19September 28, 2021 6:28 AM

Didn't know PTA was so hated here. I like his work. So few people even know how to make anything resembling a proper film nowadays.

by Anonymousreply 20September 28, 2021 6:32 AM

I wonder if this is why Babs was trashing Bradley Cooper recently. She must've seen this.

by Anonymousreply 21September 28, 2021 6:35 AM

I usually love PTA (Boogie Nights is his peak, IMO, and he made it at only 27) but this seems way more drab than anything else he's made.

by Anonymousreply 22September 28, 2021 6:57 AM

R16 It’s one of the Haim sisters. PTA is a friend of their family and directed a few of their music videos.

by Anonymousreply 23September 28, 2021 7:02 AM

Am i the only one who thinks that Bradley Cooper is both ugly and over-rated?! Blech. Maybe at the beginning of his career, he was somewhat hot-ish but now i'm so sick of seeing him everywhere, he's NOT that talented or good looking, and he's Demi Lovato'ed himself to the point where he just needs to GO AWAY for awhile. Just stop. FULL.STOP.

by Anonymousreply 24September 28, 2021 7:11 AM

That woman is as homely as they come and with her nipples and Seymour Hoffman’s son for whatever reason? I feel like the director is so used to acclaim at this point he’ll just put out whatever weird 70s kink or piece of shit he feels like putting out. Forget story.

by Anonymousreply 25September 28, 2021 10:39 AM

Well gosh R18, if it's UTTERLY IRRELEVANT why did you mention it?

by Anonymousreply 26September 28, 2021 10:41 AM

Anyone else getting Hollywood pedophile and child actor exploitation vibes about this, even though it’s wrapped up in teen sexploits comedy? Kind of like they’re acting out sexually because of the abuse? It seems like something he would tackle and in a somewhat subversive way, leading you in with it one way and then breaking your heart in another?

by Anonymousreply 27September 28, 2021 10:50 AM

Nips.

by Anonymousreply 28September 28, 2021 11:38 AM

I loved Boogie Nights (though don't know whether I'll ever watch it again, because for me it's tied to a period of my life I don't care to revisit), but didn't make it through Magnolia, and don't know that I've ever watched another PTA film.

This trailer seems...flat.

by Anonymousreply 29September 28, 2021 12:07 PM

[quote]Didn't know PTA was so hated here. I like his work. So few people even know how to make anything resembling a proper film nowadays.

I agree. I certainly haven't loved all of his films -- though I very much liked Boogie Nights and Magnolia -- but all of them include some really interesting stuff, I think. Even Inherent Vice! I'm looking forward to this film.

by Anonymousreply 30September 28, 2021 12:18 PM

[quote]Licorice Pizza

Sounds even worse than Hawaiian pizza.

by Anonymousreply 31September 28, 2021 12:23 PM

The only PTA movie I enjoyed was There Will Be Blood, due to its historical sweep. All the others have been pure, unadulterated crap.

by Anonymousreply 32September 28, 2021 1:20 PM

Licorice Pizza was an old LA-area record store.

As for the actors being unattractive, average people have stories too. It’s more realistic that these characters aren’t unrealistically beautiful actors being nerved up with unflattering makeup and glasses or whatever, as is the norm. No actor annoys me more than Bradley Cooper. Can’t stand him.

by Anonymousreply 33September 28, 2021 1:21 PM

Nerved=nerded

by Anonymousreply 34September 28, 2021 1:23 PM

R27, go find a movie called "Mysterious Skin."

by Anonymousreply 35September 28, 2021 2:22 PM

She looks like tennis player Belinda Bencic.

by Anonymousreply 36September 28, 2021 2:24 PM

R35 I know it, read it first and saw it and probably can’t watch it again for that bathroom beating scene. What does that have to do with Hollywood child actor pedophiles?

by Anonymousreply 37September 28, 2021 2:26 PM

I’m just glad it’s not another Marvel movie or stupid romance starring a bunch of bland generically pretty people.

by Anonymousreply 38September 28, 2021 2:29 PM

The lead actor and actress are both hard to look at.

by Anonymousreply 39September 28, 2021 2:32 PM

I still don’t get how Paul Thomas Anderson went from Fiona Apple to Maya Rudolph. After SNL Maya has been in bad movies and let her looks go.

by Anonymousreply 40September 28, 2021 2:34 PM

Is the girl another Qualey?

by Anonymousreply 41September 28, 2021 2:34 PM

At first glance, I thought that was one of those homely Haim broads. Turns out it is. Yuck.

by Anonymousreply 42September 28, 2021 2:35 PM

[quote] Well gosh [R18], if it's UTTERLY IRRELEVANT why did you mention it?

Because R10 mentioned her.

by Anonymousreply 43September 28, 2021 4:18 PM

[quote] I’m just glad it’s not another Marvel movie or stupid romance starring a bunch of bland generically pretty people.

This is a good point, but this film will not make money in China the way those digital video abominations will, so nothing will change.

by Anonymousreply 44September 28, 2021 4:20 PM

I like licorice, I like pizza. Licorice Pizza?

by Anonymousreply 45September 28, 2021 4:20 PM

This looks awful. I'm not sure I can take three hours of that Haim broad's hideous face. Or Bradley Cooper's.

by Anonymousreply 46September 28, 2021 4:27 PM

Am I the only one who thinks that Bradley Cooper is both gorgeous and underrated?! Yum. Certainly at the beginning of his career, and even now, he is HOT but now I'm so sick of people trashing him everywhere, he's SO talented and good looking, and he's Evan Peters'ed himself to the point where he just needs to attach himself to more great projects. Just do it. FULL. SPEED. AHEAD.

by Anonymousreply 47September 28, 2021 4:30 PM

PTA seems to like LOUD ALPHA MALE HUCKSTERS in his movies. Tom Cruise played one in "Magnolia," Daniel Day Lewis was one on and off in "There Will Be Blood" and Bradley Cooper seems to be playing that role in this one. Brad wants an Oscar. Best Supporting.

by Anonymousreply 48September 28, 2021 4:36 PM

Wait, this movie is THREE HOURS LONG?

by Anonymousreply 49September 28, 2021 4:41 PM

Aren't all of his movies?

by Anonymousreply 50September 28, 2021 4:47 PM

Not all lead actors need to be good looking. But they should not be downright ugly. To watch ugly people do things for 2 hours, PTA is simple asking too much of the audience. A little background, the lead actress is in a band called HAM (the i is invisible to me), with her equally ugly sisters. PTA is close friends with their mother. Nepotism is heavily in play.

by Anonymousreply 51September 28, 2021 4:53 PM

r51 simply not simple. And 3 hours, not 2.

by Anonymousreply 52September 28, 2021 4:54 PM

Whern she asks him if he wants to see her boobs and then unzips her dress, I expected him to shoot back- Ok, where are they?

by Anonymousreply 53September 28, 2021 4:55 PM

Based on the trailer, I loved the photography.

I enjoyed the trailer and realized that it was because of the perfect song choice.

Without that song, the film actually looks like a meandering and boring mess...

Who knows! I will check it out as I love films that take place in southern CA.

by Anonymousreply 54September 28, 2021 4:56 PM

r50 Punch Drunk Love was 90 minutes.

PSH Jr. is cuter than his dad. And actually seems like a warmer, more likeable presence as well. PSH was brilliant but always vaguely offputting.

by Anonymousreply 55September 28, 2021 4:57 PM

I can just hear the hushed audience next year as Jack Nicholson announces, "And the Oscar goes to....Licorice Pizza...what the fuck"?

by Anonymousreply 56September 28, 2021 4:59 PM

r56 Apparently the title was almost "Soggy Bottom".

by Anonymousreply 57September 28, 2021 5:03 PM

Punch Drunk Love felt like three hours. It was a horrible movie. Adam Sandler can't act for shit.

by Anonymousreply 58September 28, 2021 5:31 PM

It’s not like she’s supermodel Tess Holiday

by Anonymousreply 59September 28, 2021 5:56 PM

I really dislike Tom cruise but I liked him in Magnolia

by Anonymousreply 60September 28, 2021 5:59 PM

Wait, isn’t Bradley Cooper playing John Peters?

by Anonymousreply 61September 28, 2021 9:54 PM

I spotted Maya Rudolph with a tight little perm in there, looking ugly as hell.

I imagine pta fucks around on her.

by Anonymousreply 62September 28, 2021 10:42 PM

PTA movies are hit or miss with me. I think both Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood were masterpieces. But The Master was a meandering mess, despite some good performances (Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons). I'm looking forward to this because I love movies that depict 1950s-1970s time periods and movies set in Los Angeles. Hopefully it won't be a disappointment.

by Anonymousreply 63September 28, 2021 11:10 PM

Is Fiona Apple self harming over this?

by Anonymousreply 64September 29, 2021 1:38 AM

Am I the only person who finds the idea of Licorice Pizza nauseating? I know it's an LA reference, but--believe it or not--not everyone lives in LA and...it's nauseating.

by Anonymousreply 65September 29, 2021 1:53 AM

It's slang for a record album. Calm the fuck down, Mary.

by Anonymousreply 66September 29, 2021 2:03 AM

I retesting I always thought the band Haim were named after legendary junkie Corey Haim.

by Anonymousreply 67September 29, 2021 2:35 AM

Was their wardrobe budget so tight that they couldn’t afford to get her a padded bra?

by Anonymousreply 68September 29, 2021 2:49 AM

Do any of you even have some concept of 70s fashion and style? Especially for middle class LA suburbia? You would think with all of the eldergays on here there wouldn't be so many comments about how plain everyone looks.

by Anonymousreply 69September 29, 2021 6:16 AM

We didn't say plain, R69. We said UGLY.

by Anonymousreply 70September 29, 2021 6:30 AM

But everyone was ugly in the 70s. Especially suburban teenagers.

by Anonymousreply 71September 29, 2021 6:33 AM

No bra was pretty typical for the 70s, duh.

by Anonymousreply 72September 29, 2021 6:40 AM

R64, that’s hilarious. Also, I love Haim the band but I’m not sure if Alana was the best choice for this. I can see in the trailer that Danielle (the middle sister and lead singer of the band as well as the most attractive and talented) is also in this movie. I imagine the six foot tall eldest sister, Este will probably be in this too. I think Hoffman’s son had a look of nepotism about him before I knew who he was. He really doesn’t look good next to Alana. I’m sure in the sea of shit that’s come out in the past two years at least this movie will be something to talk about. Anderson seems to have a creepy affinity for that certain type of indie singer. He had Johanna Newsom in his film Inherent Vice, which I found creepy. I like her but she’s a lot like Fiona Apple somehow. Seeing that he’s roped Haim into his antics just creeps me out. I just wanna know when Danielle Haim will come out as the obvious lesbian that she is.

by Anonymousreply 73September 29, 2021 7:05 AM

Gawd, what a bunch of prisspots. For you, there is Kenneth Branaugh’s Belfast - the troubles set to…Everlasting Love? Sure, Ken. Way to cut a trailer. And, of course, Judi Dench. Right. Just mediocre and unchallenging enough to be fully embraced by DL. While they wait for the fucking Bodyguard remake.

by Anonymousreply 74September 29, 2021 7:16 AM

The only thing that makes me a bit guarded is I’m getting “Almost Famous” vibes, but set in the movies instead of rock and roll, and while there are small bits of that movie I like, I’m not that big of a fan that so many people of it are and I find it very overrated and not historically accurate. But I do love PTA and trust him more than Cameron Crowe as a director.

by Anonymousreply 75September 29, 2021 8:16 AM

I’ve seen everything he has done (love Boogie Nights & Hard Eight), and will probably watch this too. But it seems a bit too twee and cutesy and *~*quirky*~* for my liking. From the unnatural deadpan line dialogue, the oversaturated Bowie song, the overdone coming-of-age tropes, and the oh-so-eccentric title. I would complain about the nepotism in the casting, but that’s pretty standard these days.

R74 does this really look ‘challenging’ to you? He is a great director but this looks more like something Greta Gerwig, Diablo Cody, (or some Sundance imitation of them) would make, just with nicer cinematography. What is with this influx of period piece, L.A-set movies lately by every director? I am reminded of the Tarantino one, the Jonah Hill one, TV shows like Hollywood and Feud, etc etc.

by Anonymousreply 76September 29, 2021 12:03 PM

R76, there are people on this thread who claim they couldn't get through Magnolia. So yes, apparently a PTA film represents some kind of challenge to the film goers collected here.

by Anonymousreply 77September 29, 2021 3:05 PM

People are making a lot of assumptions based on a two-minute trailer.

by Anonymousreply 78September 29, 2021 3:06 PM

Well he’s an enigmatic film maker and very layered, so it’s ripe for interpretation, one never quite knows what one will get with a PTA film.

by Anonymousreply 79September 29, 2021 3:57 PM

[quote] one never quite knows what one will get with a PTA film.

Sleep is usually pretty guaranteed.

by Anonymousreply 80September 29, 2021 4:00 PM

Really surprised to see one of the Haim girls starring in this. She doesn’t seem bad in the trailers, I guess. Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s son seems… very bland. This shit feels too cutesy for an Anderson film. It’s feels like some kind of quirky indie movie starring Zoey Deschanel.

by Anonymousreply 81September 29, 2021 4:04 PM

If PTA is so horrible/boring/talentless, who does this board consider good current filmmakers?

by Anonymousreply 82September 29, 2021 4:23 PM

What is this Haim people speak of?

by Anonymousreply 83September 29, 2021 5:27 PM

Why are all the kids white? He's gonna get crucified for that, especially because Maya Rudolph's the mother of his kids.

by Anonymousreply 84September 29, 2021 5:57 PM

I thought only white people counted in the 1970s?

by Anonymousreply 85September 29, 2021 6:10 PM

Wow straight boy lust and artistic awakening. Pta is an artist for the ages.

by Anonymousreply 86September 29, 2021 7:04 PM

The Phantom Thread was one of the most boring movies with the most ridiculous plot line I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 87September 29, 2021 7:12 PM

r83 This is HAiM. They make boring, forgettable music and look like they belong to a cult that worships Alice the Goon from Popeye.

by Anonymousreply 88September 29, 2021 7:22 PM

r88 Alice the Goon, for reference.

[quote] I enjoyed the trailer and realized that it was because of the perfect song choice. Without that song, the film actually looks like a meandering and boring mess...

Exactly. Pump up old Bowie and anything seems nostalgic and fascinating. Someone should strip out the song and show the trailer without "Life on Mars." It would prove that even a bunch of jump-cuts don't maintain interest for a pair of ovoid-faced pimply fuggos and scenery-chewing old guys.

by Anonymousreply 90September 29, 2021 8:36 PM

I think his films are GOOD, but they leave me so emotionally wrung out. Like a state of despair.

The photo at OP made the word “uglycore” pop into my head.

by Anonymousreply 91September 29, 2021 8:45 PM

r86 Then answer my question. If he's so horrible, then name people making films today who are much better than him.

by Anonymousreply 92September 29, 2021 9:12 PM

Go duh yourself R72.

by Anonymousreply 93September 29, 2021 10:54 PM

R86 I can’t answer your question. I am more well versed in directors of the 70s-90s. And I have never been impressed with PTA. That’s all I’ve got.

by Anonymousreply 94September 29, 2021 10:58 PM

Of course I’m going to see it, but it also looks like a Richard Linklater knock-off. I guess when PTA starts featuring his wife in his fits you know he’s losing steam.

by Anonymousreply 95September 29, 2021 11:04 PM

R14, fuck off. Magnolia is perfection.

by Anonymousreply 96September 29, 2021 11:23 PM

r94 So you've got nothing. Why watch his movies?

by Anonymousreply 97September 29, 2021 11:24 PM

PTA needs to stop with his tendency to overindulge. His movies are too damn long, have bad pacing and a bad focus. The only movie that didn't have this problem was Hard Eight, which was also the only movie he wasn't involved in the editing process. 'Artiste' directors always have this problem because they are precious about what they film and want all of it in the movie, against better judgement.

by Anonymousreply 98September 29, 2021 11:28 PM

Oh shut up, R97. I'm not anyone you're asking the question of, but your smug bullshit is more irritating than anything PTA has ever done.

by Anonymousreply 99September 29, 2021 11:33 PM

Get of my jock R97.

No way will I see this one, because I’ve seen a bunch of his other overrated works of pretension. So yeah that’s all I’ve got.

Now what exactly does it take to satisfy you, babe?

by Anonymousreply 100September 29, 2021 11:40 PM

He’s a good filmmaker but he is indulgent and I don’t find his obsessions all that interesting.

This seems like something cooked up to keep all his friends working during the pandemic.

by Anonymousreply 101September 29, 2021 11:47 PM

r99 Fuck off if you have nothing to contribute.

r100 If you're incapable of naming any current filmmakers, then I think you're just a fucking moron.

by Anonymousreply 102September 29, 2021 11:58 PM

Filmmakers who I think are better:

Alejandro González Iñárritu

Alfonso Cuarón

Ang Lee

Bong Joon-ho

Christopher Nolan

Danny Boyle

David Fincher

David Lowery

Denis Villeneuve

Derek Cianfrance

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

François Ozon

Guillermo del Toro

James Gray

Joe Wright

Julián Hernández

Michael Haneke

Michel Gondry

Mike Leigh

Paul Verhoeven

Pedro Almodóvar

Quentin Tarantino

Xavier Dolan

Yorgos Lanthimos

by Anonymousreply 103September 30, 2021 12:15 AM

I'd love to see a cut of this trailer directed by del Toro r103. He's a true genius, and one of the few male directors in Hollywood who doesn't seem to be a creep.

by Anonymousreply 104September 30, 2021 12:17 AM

r103 There. Was that so difficult? I don't agree with many of those, but I appreciate the answer instead of smart-alec backtalk.

by Anonymousreply 105September 30, 2021 12:19 AM

I love you for saying “smart alec [sp] backtalk”

by Anonymousreply 106September 30, 2021 12:26 AM

[quote] [R99] Fuck off if you have nothing to contribute.

Eat shit, prisspot.

by Anonymousreply 107September 30, 2021 1:07 AM

That's a long list of only marginally talented people R103.

by Anonymousreply 108September 30, 2021 1:35 AM

R102 what is with your big yeast infection?

by Anonymousreply 109September 30, 2021 2:00 AM

This thread has everything you expect from a classic DL thread leading with hating on actors for not being gorgeous enough for the high standards of your average DL poster (most of whom are fat, old, gay men living fussily in dreary suburban condos) and plummeting all the way down to some moron making disparaging remarks about Bowie's "Life on Mars".

by Anonymousreply 110September 30, 2021 2:30 AM

R110 is the moron. And the asshole.

by Anonymousreply 111September 30, 2021 2:32 AM

LOL...gee, R111, did I touch one of your old, gay, fat, David Bowie hating nerves?

by Anonymousreply 112September 30, 2021 2:38 AM

This is so bad it actually looks like a SNL parody.

by Anonymousreply 113September 30, 2021 2:43 AM

And yet, r108, all still more talented than Paul Thomas Anderson.

by Anonymousreply 114September 30, 2021 2:44 AM

r113The last laugh over what? She's still a nutjob who makes boring, shitty music.

by Anonymousreply 115September 30, 2021 3:08 AM

I bet PTA hasn't stopped laughing after finding out that Fiona fucked Louis C.K. That's a level of gross sleaziness you never come back from. The fact that she's looked at as some sort of feminist icon is fucking hilarious. She lives with some fat, old dyke who licks her ass and tweets about her all day. She looks old and worn out and resembles Steve Buscemi now.

by Anonymousreply 116September 30, 2021 3:15 AM

PTA fanboyz can kiss my ass.

by Anonymousreply 117September 30, 2021 6:52 AM

r117 What "fanboyz"? Most people here are trashing this.

But enlighten us.

by Anonymousreply 118September 30, 2021 7:05 AM

R103, that list could be a lot shorter.

by Anonymousreply 119September 30, 2021 8:03 AM

I didn’t even realise it was Life On Mars. I like PTA. However, even though I love Emily Watson, I don’t ever want to see Punch Drunk Love again. And someday I’ll finish the 2nd half of Inherent Vice.

by Anonymousreply 120September 30, 2021 8:04 AM

R103 has room for Christopher Nolan (ha ha), Danny Boyle (most of his films I can barely read about much less watch), David Fincher (check), David Lowery, Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond The Pines, really?), Florian Henckel von Donnersmercht (w/ 1 notable, widely embraced mediocre film - I’m surprised you didn’t include Oliver Hirschbiegel or Uli Edel), James Gray (!), Joe Wright (!!), Julián Hernández (?), and the tragic misfires of Xavier Dolan…

…but no Todd Haynes? Chloe Zhao? Or even Andrew Haigh?

Also, as it hasn’t been discussed yet: PTA isn’t just some stylist film director. He’s a terrific and challenging screenwriter, which is a large part of what makes his films so worthy of attention.

by Anonymousreply 121September 30, 2021 8:25 AM

I never understood the hype about Boogie Nights. Wahlberg s a mediocre actor who couldn't pull off the part. It's always bad when the lead can't carry the movie. And yes, even though the good Christian boy now denies it. It was his own ugly penis in that movie.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 122September 30, 2021 8:31 AM

Screenwriting is probably PTA's worst talent. He can't tell a story, his stories are a mess and have no focus. He's visually an excellent filmmaker, he creates compelling characters and he gets amazing performance out of his actors, esp when he hires good ones. But as a storyteller he has no talent.

by Anonymousreply 123September 30, 2021 8:41 AM

Haim are the Willis sisters with banjos or whatever the fuck they play

by Anonymousreply 124September 30, 2021 8:57 AM

The problem is, stupid title aside, this looks like a stupid coming of age film. While I kind of got Punch Drunk Love vibes, it ultimately came across as a twisted Wes Anderson film.

by Anonymousreply 125September 30, 2021 9:42 AM

The lead actress has a Manson girl look about her; judging from the trailer - which can be deceiving - it looks like something that hardcore PTS will regale as pure genius, while everyone else thinks it's Dullsville

by Anonymousreply 126September 30, 2021 11:10 AM

i watched the whole trailer and I have no idea what this movie is about.

by Anonymousreply 127September 30, 2021 1:55 PM

[quote] but no Todd Haynes? Chloe Zhao? Or even Andrew Haigh?

Perhaps, r121, because they're not very good?

by Anonymousreply 128September 30, 2021 2:23 PM

Wait, they're using the BASS FACE girl in this movie? What the fuck.

by Anonymousreply 129September 30, 2021 2:30 PM

R22 That's bullshit. Both Magnolia and There Will Be Blood are better than Boogie Nights.

by Anonymousreply 130September 30, 2021 2:50 PM

Magnolia is only great if you've never seen a Robert Altman film - there are some fantastic and moving performances (Julianne Moore, seriously), and it's overall a good movie, but not better than Boogie Nights for a story about entertainment in LA.

I really like There Will We Blood, but I can't take DDL seriously in it because of the amount of times my friends and I have done impressions of the (in)famous "I've abandoned my BOY!" scene. The ending is brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 131September 30, 2021 2:56 PM

Agreed, 130.

by Anonymousreply 132September 30, 2021 2:56 PM

Looks like PTA is filming on digital now, the colors look absolute shit, like a David Fincher movie. Yes and the trailer looks stupid. Inherent Vice was a complete mess, but at least the trailer looked good. He couldn't even cut a good trailer for this movie.

I remember listening to some podcast of an interview PTA did with Robert Downey Jr's father, who's a filmmaker too. And both of them sounded like low life trailer park trash.

by Anonymousreply 133September 30, 2021 10:54 PM

[quote] both of them sounded like low life trailer park trash.

Downey Sr. lived his entire life in New York City. Also, you're an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 134September 30, 2021 10:59 PM

I gave up on PTA after "Vanilla Sky". He is incapable of telling a coherent story any longer.

by Anonymousreply 135October 2, 2021 4:35 PM

r135 Yeah, same here.

by Anonymousreply 136October 2, 2021 4:52 PM

I've been watching the Fassbinder German trilogy. Brilliant, feels so timely.

But his editor was so important. And then I find out that Scorsese grabbed her!

The editor is the key I think. She/he shapes the auteur's mad vision for a mainstream audience to digest.

by Anonymousreply 137October 2, 2021 5:37 PM

Nope. I'm an idiot- it was the cinematographer Michel Ballhaus! But he made the films beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 138October 2, 2021 5:38 PM

But you are right, r137; Quentin Tarantino's films have become more ponderous and cumbersome since the death of his longtime editor.

by Anonymousreply 139October 3, 2021 5:41 AM

First watermelon sugar, now licorice pizza, what’s next lavender omelets?

by Anonymousreply 140October 3, 2021 5:49 AM

[quote] I never understood the hype about Boogie Nights. Wahlberg s a mediocre actor who couldn't pull off the part. It's always bad when the lead can't carry the movie. And yes, even though the good Christian boy now denies it. It was his own ugly penis in that movie.

My god, that’s a lot of stupid and wrong in one post.

by Anonymousreply 141October 3, 2021 6:11 AM

I already wasn’t going to see this movie, but if PTA is shooting on digital now, then he truly is dead to me.

by Anonymousreply 142October 3, 2021 6:11 AM

Bass Face is the chick’s older sister. For some reason the youngest Haim sister is the anointed actreese of the bunch.

by Anonymousreply 143October 3, 2021 6:14 AM

I’ll give it a chance. If it’s bad I don’t have to like it.

by Anonymousreply 144October 3, 2021 6:34 AM

The Haim sister looks fine upon a 2nd viewing of the trailer.

by Anonymousreply 145October 3, 2021 12:58 PM

Well the Haim gal is getting reviews to die for.

by Anonymousreply 146November 16, 2021 10:10 AM

Was there a musical inspiration for this, perhaps period music?

by Anonymousreply 147November 16, 2021 10:28 AM

And in DL’s parallel universe (which is the real world) Licorice Pizza is at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

by Anonymousreply 148November 16, 2021 10:29 AM

I can’t help but read the title and then in my head instantly hear musically the phrase “Watermelon Sugar”

by Anonymousreply 149November 16, 2021 10:37 AM

Who are you assholes bitching about "fugly" actors in a PTA movie? They're NOT supposed to be hot. This ain't a Tom Ford film, you FUCKING philistines.

by Anonymousreply 150November 16, 2021 11:23 AM

R135 , what are you blathering about? Vanilla Sky is a Cameron Crowe movie, and also terrible.

by Anonymousreply 151November 16, 2021 6:55 PM

I just walked past a marquee that advertised an upcoming screening of this in 70mm. I scratched my head, because I had read this comment here:

[quote] Looks like PTA is filming on digital now, the colors look absolute shit, like a David Fincher movie.

…so I looked it up, and no, PTA shot this on 35mm not digital.

So it has that going for it. Thank god

by Anonymousreply 152November 18, 2021 10:45 PM

I like that she's the leading lady. It's like the era of Sandy Dennis and Karen Black all over again.

by Anonymousreply 153November 18, 2021 10:47 PM

Sandy Dennis and Karen Black were appealing.

by Anonymousreply 154November 18, 2021 10:57 PM

They were also odd looking.

by Anonymousreply 155November 18, 2021 10:58 PM

Maya Rudolph is no one’s idea of a beauty but damn, imagine being cheated on with THAT.

by Anonymousreply 156November 18, 2021 11:27 PM

[quote]Punch Drunk Love felt like three hours. It was a horrible movie. Adam Sandler can't act for shit.

I caught Punch Drunk Love on PlutoTV the other night (it aired right after There Will Be Blood); I lasted 15 minutes. Pretentious as hell.

by Anonymousreply 157November 19, 2021 9:29 PM

Is this movie good?

by Anonymousreply 158December 10, 2021 11:59 PM

I will never pay money to see a movie called Licorice Pizza.

by Anonymousreply 159December 11, 2021 12:20 AM

god that Haim video was annoying as fuck.

by Anonymousreply 160December 11, 2021 1:30 AM

Alana was perfectly fine in this as was Hoffman's son. It was nice to see the whole Haim band in the movie too. There were some great music choices and the story had something to say. I felt like there was a lot of relevancy in exploring the mindset of a 20 something girl in LA who, by keeping her options open for all things, ends up not doing anything at all. That's exactly how kids are these days with aspirations to be anything and everything without commitment or passion.

by Anonymousreply 161December 11, 2021 5:08 AM

Paul Thomas Anderson was a little kid in the 70s. I guess he just wishes he spend his teen in years in the 70s instead of the 80s.

by Anonymousreply 162December 14, 2021 2:20 AM

By the way, this film is embarrassing and the critics should be ashamed of themselves for pushing more mediocre white guy nostalgia.

by Anonymousreply 163December 14, 2021 2:22 AM

UGLY NEPOTISM.

by Anonymousreply 164December 14, 2021 2:30 AM

Can't wait to see it.

by Anonymousreply 165December 14, 2021 11:23 AM

Ugly people movie

by Anonymousreply 166December 14, 2021 11:28 AM

I'm ugly too. So I'm excited to see the movie. All of his movies are good

by Anonymousreply 167December 14, 2021 9:22 PM

Yeah, the two leads are ugly and Licorice Pizza is the most off-putting title ever. No thanks.

by Anonymousreply 168December 14, 2021 10:25 PM

Threads like this are always a helpful reminder that there are plenty of gays with very basic taste in film, music etc., and that many of them congregate here on DL.

by Anonymousreply 169December 14, 2021 10:31 PM

Apparently this film is really racist and problematic.

by Anonymousreply 170December 14, 2021 10:38 PM

It is. PTA films are mixed for me. But I am hoping this is good. And to me it looks good. But I didn't see inherent vice and hated the master and the phantom thread. Not a fan of there will be blood either. Loved magnolia and booth nights

by Anonymousreply 171December 14, 2021 11:00 PM

R170, care to elaborate?

by Anonymousreply 172December 15, 2021 12:04 AM

R169 What are some of your favorite movies and music bands, the wise one?

by Anonymousreply 173December 15, 2021 8:22 AM

[quote]As for the actors being unattractive, average people have stories too. It’s more realistic that these characters aren’t unrealistically beautiful actors being nerved up with unflattering makeup and glasses or whatever, as is the norm.

Fine. It's realistic. But no one wants to PAY to look at fugs. We can do that for free on the street.

by Anonymousreply 174December 15, 2021 11:03 AM

R174 You sound so lame. And probably have a shitty taste.

by Anonymousreply 175December 16, 2021 7:51 AM

PTA is a vainglorious turd.

by Anonymousreply 176December 17, 2021 2:14 AM

I liked this movie. It’s definitely the most authentic film experience I’ve seen all year.

by Anonymousreply 177December 17, 2021 1:45 PM

People should stop the random outrage and focus on the double standard. It's more effective.

by Anonymousreply 178December 20, 2021 8:24 AM

R176 “ vainglorious”? Aren’t all artists, and especially filmmakers, “vainglorious” to some degree by nature? PTA makes big, expensive, very good movies with a studio that he wants large numbers people to watch that reflect himself and his vision, you dolt. And if you really think he’s overly vain, I can’t remember a single instance where I’ve seen him on a major talk show yakking it up and playing charades with Jimmy Fallon or whatever. I’m not sure what you expect of him.

by Anonymousreply 179December 20, 2021 7:04 PM

R16 Fiona Apple just won 2 Grammys and is still as beautiful as ever.

R182 Boogie Nights and Magnolia had nothing interesting to say?

by Anonymousreply 183December 29, 2021 1:10 PM

by Anonymousreply 184December 29, 2021 1:24 PM

by Anonymousreply 185December 29, 2021 3:13 PM

[quote] Boogie Nights and Magnolia had nothing interesting to say?

Yes, "Look how much I can rip off Robert Altman!"

by Anonymousreply 186December 29, 2021 3:15 PM

All I know is that fucking commercial with them repeating "Streisand," makes me hate this movie .

by Anonymousreply 187December 29, 2021 3:45 PM

You couldn't pay me to see this thing.

by Anonymousreply 188December 29, 2021 4:09 PM

It was a total piece of shit. Two hours of "nostalgia" about when rich teenaged boys could just do anything with no consequences, and female characters exist to fawn over or wait for men. Brad Cooper is awful (mostly the writing for him) but at least something happens during his 7 minutes on screen.

by Anonymousreply 189December 29, 2021 5:35 PM

Ah, finally, someone who has actually seen the movie. So Reddit posters are raving about Alana Haim's performance. Did you think it was that great?

by Anonymousreply 190December 29, 2021 6:35 PM

So is it officially out?

by Anonymousreply 191December 29, 2021 6:38 PM

He certainly seems to have captured the ugly look of the 70s extremely well. As dreary as I remember. I went through them once. I don't need to endure them again.

by Anonymousreply 192December 29, 2021 6:43 PM

It's available now on Amazon Prime, going to check it out this weekend

by Anonymousreply 193August 20, 2022 10:51 PM

Watched it a few months ago. It's not bad but parts of it make no sense, primarily the way Hoffman's character keeps opening all these businesses. It doesn't seem likely that even his acting career (which doesn't look like all that much) could fund his series of endeavors.

Haim holds the film together and is the main reason to watch it. Hoffman is engaging in the beginning but his character isn't as well written and becomes less interesting as the film progresses.

The movie has sequences that look as if they're going somewhere and then the characters are dropped. Cooper is funny at first with his Jon Peters impression (and it's probably accurate) but the film doesn't do much with him.

by Anonymousreply 194August 20, 2022 11:22 PM

The Haim girl does look like a 70's throwback

by Anonymousreply 195August 20, 2022 11:24 PM

Cooper has a weight problem like his father

by Anonymousreply 196August 20, 2022 11:29 PM

Why does Maya Rudolph stay with PTA? It's not like he's ever done anything for her career. He writes a big showcase for a Haim chick, but nothing for her?

by Anonymousreply 197August 21, 2022 1:08 AM

Maya looked fat and dumpy in that movie. A slap in the face since her husband was rumored to be fucking the Haim girl.

by Anonymousreply 198August 21, 2022 2:38 AM

r197 Same thing with Inherent Vice, her only other appearence in his movies. Both 30 second cameos where she was made to look very unflattering while he drooled over the leading lady (in IV, it was Katherine Waterston, whom he was also rumored to have fucked).

And after everything Fiona Apple revealed, what does Maya get out of staying with him? Being with a "genius" I guess, but do people still view him that way? He got Oscar nominations for this but it was an extremely weak year and by the time the Oscars came around, it seemed like hardly anybody even liked this movie.

She can do better than a sleazebag like PTA.

by Anonymousreply 199August 21, 2022 3:08 AM

R197 R199 Hopefully Fiona Apple's song "Newspaper" will get through to her. It's a pretty bold move to write a song like that addressed to your ex's new wife, but Fiona has never been timid

by Anonymousreply 200August 21, 2022 3:27 AM

I was really looking forward to this & was very disappointed. Everyone raved about Alana’s performance, which I found to be rather natural & untrained, like they just plucked her off the street.

They did really nail the aspects of the period.

by Anonymousreply 201August 21, 2022 7:26 AM
