Well, I don't think you can judge a PTA film by its trailer, but this looks intriguing to me.

Looks awful. Full of homely people, including Bradley Cooper in a ratty wig.

A woman judging the viewer in the profile pic is SO going to entice viewers....
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 27, 2021 8:12 PM |
People so staggeringly insecure that they feel judged by a woman in a photo shouldn't be leaving the house, let alone going to a movie.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 27, 2021 8:19 PM |
The film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman's son; James Gandolfini's son was obviously busy.

by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 27, 2021 8:59 PM |
PTA really went for weird in the beautifully shot but strange film "Phantom Thread." This one looks boring, weird AND ugly.

That Bowie song is fucking annoying as hell. Ugh.

Forgot to add: the movie does not look good at all. I love Boogie Nights —owned it on deluxe Laserdisc and now blu ray— but have never been interested in anything else the very handsome PTA has done. (Including his relationship with the dreary and tiresome Fiona Apple, which is utterly irrelevant.)

I wonder if this is why Babs was trashing Bradley Cooper recently. She must've seen this.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 28, 2021 6:35 AM |
I usually love PTA (Boogie Nights is his peak, IMO, and he made it at only 27) but this seems way more drab than anything else he's made.

R16 It’s one of the Haim sisters. PTA is a friend of their family and directed a few of their music videos.

Am i the only one who thinks that Bradley Cooper is both ugly and over-rated?! Blech. Maybe at the beginning of his career, he was somewhat hot-ish but now i'm so sick of seeing him everywhere, he's NOT that talented or good looking, and he's Demi Lovato'ed himself to the point where he just needs to GO AWAY for awhile. Just stop. FULL.STOP.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 28, 2021 7:11 AM |
That woman is as homely as they come and with her nipples and Seymour Hoffman’s son for whatever reason? I feel like the director is so used to acclaim at this point he’ll just put out whatever weird 70s kink or piece of shit he feels like putting out. Forget story.

Anyone else getting Hollywood pedophile and child actor exploitation vibes about this, even though it’s wrapped up in teen sexploits comedy? Kind of like they’re acting out sexually because of the abuse? It seems like something he would tackle and in a somewhat subversive way, leading you in with it one way and then breaking your heart in another?

Licorice Pizza was an old LA-area record store.
As for the actors being unattractive, average people have stories too. It’s more realistic that these characters aren’t unrealistically beautiful actors being nerved up with unflattering makeup and glasses or whatever, as is the norm. No actor annoys me more than Bradley Cooper. Can’t stand him.

PTA seems to like LOUD ALPHA MALE HUCKSTERS in his movies. Tom Cruise played one in "Magnolia," Daniel Day Lewis was one on and off in "There Will Be Blood" and Bradley Cooper seems to be playing that role in this one. Brad wants an Oscar. Best Supporting.

Not all lead actors need to be good looking. But they should not be downright ugly. To watch ugly people do things for 2 hours, PTA is simple asking too much of the audience. A little background, the lead actress is in a band called HAM (the i is invisible to me), with her equally ugly sisters. PTA is close friends with their mother. Nepotism is heavily in play.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 28, 2021 4:53 PM |

PTA movies are hit or miss with me. I think both Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood were masterpieces. But The Master was a meandering mess, despite some good performances (Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons). I'm looking forward to this because I love movies that depict 1950s-1970s time periods and movies set in Los Angeles. Hopefully it won't be a disappointment.

R64, that’s hilarious. Also, I love Haim the band but I’m not sure if Alana was the best choice for this. I can see in the trailer that Danielle (the middle sister and lead singer of the band as well as the most attractive and talented) is also in this movie. I imagine the six foot tall eldest sister, Este will probably be in this too. I think Hoffman’s son had a look of nepotism about him before I knew who he was. He really doesn’t look good next to Alana. I’m sure in the sea of shit that’s come out in the past two years at least this movie will be something to talk about. Anderson seems to have a creepy affinity for that certain type of indie singer. He had Johanna Newsom in his film Inherent Vice, which I found creepy. I like her but she’s a lot like Fiona Apple somehow. Seeing that he’s roped Haim into his antics just creeps me out. I just wanna know when Danielle Haim will come out as the obvious lesbian that she is.

Gawd, what a bunch of prisspots. For you, there is Kenneth Branaugh’s Belfast - the troubles set to…Everlasting Love? Sure, Ken. Way to cut a trailer. And, of course, Judi Dench. Right. Just mediocre and unchallenging enough to be fully embraced by DL. While they wait for the fucking Bodyguard remake.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | September 29, 2021 7:16 AM |
The only thing that makes me a bit guarded is I’m getting “Almost Famous” vibes, but set in the movies instead of rock and roll, and while there are small bits of that movie I like, I’m not that big of a fan that so many people of it are and I find it very overrated and not historically accurate. But I do love PTA and trust him more than Cameron Crowe as a director.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | September 29, 2021 8:16 AM |
I’ve seen everything he has done (love Boogie Nights & Hard Eight), and will probably watch this too. But it seems a bit too twee and cutesy and *~*quirky*~* for my liking. From the unnatural deadpan line dialogue, the oversaturated Bowie song, the overdone coming-of-age tropes, and the oh-so-eccentric title. I would complain about the nepotism in the casting, but that’s pretty standard these days.
R74 does this really look ‘challenging’ to you? He is a great director but this looks more like something Greta Gerwig, Diablo Cody, (or some Sundance imitation of them) would make, just with nicer cinematography. What is with this influx of period piece, L.A-set movies lately by every director? I am reminded of the Tarantino one, the Jonah Hill one, TV shows like Hollywood and Feud, etc etc.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 29, 2021 12:03 PM |

Exactly. Pump up old Bowie and anything seems nostalgic and fascinating. Someone should strip out the song and show the trailer without "Life on Mars." It would prove that even a bunch of jump-cuts don't maintain interest for a pair of ovoid-faced pimply fuggos and scenery-chewing old guys.

by Anonymous | reply 97 | September 29, 2021 11:24 PM |
PTA needs to stop with his tendency to overindulge. His movies are too damn long, have bad pacing and a bad focus. The only movie that didn't have this problem was Hard Eight, which was also the only movie he wasn't involved in the editing process. 'Artiste' directors always have this problem because they are precious about what they film and want all of it in the movie, against better judgement.

R103 has room for Christopher Nolan (ha ha), Danny Boyle (most of his films I can barely read about much less watch), David Fincher (check), David Lowery, Derek Cianfrance (The Place Beyond The Pines, really?), Florian Henckel von Donnersmercht (w/ 1 notable, widely embraced mediocre film - I’m surprised you didn’t include Oliver Hirschbiegel or Uli Edel), James Gray (!), Joe Wright (!!), Julián Hernández (?), and the tragic misfires of Xavier Dolan…
…but no Todd Haynes? Chloe Zhao? Or even Andrew Haigh?
Also, as it hasn’t been discussed yet: PTA isn’t just some stylist film director. He’s a terrific and challenging screenwriter, which is a large part of what makes his films so worthy of attention.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | September 30, 2021 8:25 AM |
I never understood the hype about Boogie Nights. Wahlberg s a mediocre actor who couldn't pull off the part. It's always bad when the lead can't carry the movie. And yes, even though the good Christian boy now denies it. It was his own ugly penis in that movie.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 30, 2021 8:31 AM |
Screenwriting is probably PTA's worst talent. He can't tell a story, his stories are a mess and have no focus. He's visually an excellent filmmaker, he creates compelling characters and he gets amazing performance out of his actors, esp when he hires good ones. But as a storyteller he has no talent.

by Anonymous | reply 124 | September 30, 2021 8:57 AM |
The problem is, stupid title aside, this looks like a stupid coming of age film. While I kind of got Punch Drunk Love vibes, it ultimately came across as a twisted Wes Anderson film.

The lead actress has a Manson girl look about her; judging from the trailer - which can be deceiving - it looks like something that hardcore PTS will regale as pure genius, while everyone else thinks it's Dullsville
by Anonymous | reply 126 | September 30, 2021 11:10 AM |
i watched the whole trailer and I have no idea what this movie is about.
by Anonymous | reply 127 | September 30, 2021 1:55 PM |
[quote] but no Todd Haynes? Chloe Zhao? Or even Andrew Haigh?
Perhaps, r121, because they're not very good?
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 30, 2021 2:23 PM |
Wait, they're using the BASS FACE girl in this movie? What the fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 30, 2021 2:30 PM |
R22 That's bullshit. Both Magnolia and There Will Be Blood are better than Boogie Nights.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | September 30, 2021 2:50 PM |
Magnolia is only great if you've never seen a Robert Altman film - there are some fantastic and moving performances (Julianne Moore, seriously), and it's overall a good movie, but not better than Boogie Nights for a story about entertainment in LA.
I really like There Will We Blood, but I can't take DDL seriously in it because of the amount of times my friends and I have done impressions of the (in)famous "I've abandoned my BOY!" scene. The ending is brilliant.

Agreed, 130.

Looks like PTA is filming on digital now, the colors look absolute shit, like a David Fincher movie. Yes and the trailer looks stupid. Inherent Vice was a complete mess, but at least the trailer looked good. He couldn't even cut a good trailer for this movie.
I remember listening to some podcast of an interview PTA did with Robert Downey Jr's father, who's a filmmaker too. And both of them sounded like low life trailer park trash.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | September 30, 2021 10:54 PM |

Downey Sr. lived his entire life in New York City. Also, you're an idiot.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | September 30, 2021 10:59 PM |
I gave up on PTA after "Vanilla Sky". He is incapable of telling a coherent story any longer.

r135 Yeah, same here.

I've been watching the Fassbinder German trilogy. Brilliant, feels so timely.
But his editor was so important. And then I find out that Scorsese grabbed her!
The editor is the key I think. She/he shapes the auteur's mad vision for a mainstream audience to digest.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | October 2, 2021 5:37 PM |
Nope. I'm an idiot- it was the cinematographer Michel Ballhaus! But he made the films beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | October 2, 2021 5:38 PM |
But you are right, r137; Quentin Tarantino's films have become more ponderous and cumbersome since the death of his longtime editor.

[quote] I never understood the hype about Boogie Nights. Wahlberg s a mediocre actor who couldn't pull off the part. It's always bad when the lead can't carry the movie. And yes, even though the good Christian boy now denies it. It was his own ugly penis in that movie.
My god, that’s a lot of stupid and wrong in one post.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | October 3, 2021 6:11 AM |
I already wasn’t going to see this movie, but if PTA is shooting on digital now, then he truly is dead to me.

Bass Face is the chick’s older sister. For some reason the youngest Haim sister is the anointed actreese of the bunch.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | October 3, 2021 6:14 AM |

…so I looked it up, and no, PTA shot this on 35mm not digital.
So it has that going for it. Thank god

Alana was perfectly fine in this as was Hoffman's son. It was nice to see the whole Haim band in the movie too. There were some great music choices and the story had something to say. I felt like there was a lot of relevancy in exploring the mindset of a 20 something girl in LA who, by keeping her options open for all things, ends up not doing anything at all. That's exactly how kids are these days with aspirations to be anything and everything without commitment or passion.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | December 11, 2021 5:08 AM |
Paul Thomas Anderson was a little kid in the 70s. I guess he just wishes he spend his teen in years in the 70s instead of the 80s.

by Anonymous | reply 178 | December 20, 2021 8:24 AM |
R176 “ vainglorious”? Aren’t all artists, and especially filmmakers, “vainglorious” to some degree by nature? PTA makes big, expensive, very good movies with a studio that he wants large numbers people to watch that reflect himself and his vision, you dolt. And if you really think he’s overly vain, I can’t remember a single instance where I’ve seen him on a major talk show yakking it up and playing charades with Jimmy Fallon or whatever. I’m not sure what you expect of him.

It was a total piece of shit. Two hours of "nostalgia" about when rich teenaged boys could just do anything with no consequences, and female characters exist to fawn over or wait for men. Brad Cooper is awful (mostly the writing for him) but at least something happens during his 7 minutes on screen.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | December 29, 2021 5:35 PM |

It's available now on Amazon Prime, going to check it out this weekend
by Anonymous | reply 193 | August 20, 2022 10:51 PM |
Watched it a few months ago. It's not bad but parts of it make no sense, primarily the way Hoffman's character keeps opening all these businesses. It doesn't seem likely that even his acting career (which doesn't look like all that much) could fund his series of endeavors.
Haim holds the film together and is the main reason to watch it. Hoffman is engaging in the beginning but his character isn't as well written and becomes less interesting as the film progresses.
The movie has sequences that look as if they're going somewhere and then the characters are dropped. Cooper is funny at first with his Jon Peters impression (and it's probably accurate) but the film doesn't do much with him.

by Anonymous | reply 197 | August 21, 2022 1:08 AM |
Maya looked fat and dumpy in that movie. A slap in the face since her husband was rumored to be fucking the Haim girl.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | August 21, 2022 2:38 AM |
r197 Same thing with Inherent Vice, her only other appearence in his movies. Both 30 second cameos where she was made to look very unflattering while he drooled over the leading lady (in IV, it was Katherine Waterston, whom he was also rumored to have fucked).
And after everything Fiona Apple revealed, what does Maya get out of staying with him? Being with a "genius" I guess, but do people still view him that way? He got Oscar nominations for this but it was an extremely weak year and by the time the Oscars came around, it seemed like hardly anybody even liked this movie.
She can do better than a sleazebag like PTA.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | August 21, 2022 3:08 AM |
R197 R199 Hopefully Fiona Apple's song "Newspaper" will get through to her. It's a pretty bold move to write a song like that addressed to your ex's new wife, but Fiona has never been timid

I was really looking forward to this & was very disappointed. Everyone raved about Alana’s performance, which I found to be rather natural & untrained, like they just plucked her off the street.
They did really nail the aspects of the period.
