There's a reason Christine Ebersole, Sutton Foster, and so many others are Broadway stars, but they can only land bit parts in movies. Theater acting and film acting are two different things. Hell, Meryl Streep, Kate Winslet, and so many others don't have Tonys for the same reason.

By all accounts, Ben is playing to the cheap seats in DEH, and what worked on Broadway comes across as overly-theatric onscreen. Meanwhile, the only person getting anything close to raves is Julianne Moore, who turns in a more subtle performance.
