When she ran for congress, Uncle Jed stuck a shiv in her political back.
To her dismay, her Hillbillies co-star Buddy Ebsen contacted the Bud Shuster campaign and volunteered to make a radio campaign ad in which he called Kulp "too liberal".[24] Kulp said of Ebsen, "He's not the kindly old Jed Clampett that you saw on the show ... It's none of his business and he should have stayed out of it." She said Ebsen and she "didn't get along because I found him difficult to work with. But I never would have done something like this to him." Garnering 59,449 votes—just 33.6% of the ballots cast in the election—to Shuster's 117,203 votes and 66.4%, she lost.[25] After this, according to her close friends and family, Ebsen was regarded as "persona non grata" to Kulp and she made it clear to people not to bring him up in conversation around her with the exception of interviews related to her time on Hillbillies. In his later years, especially after Kulp's death, Ebsen privately expressed remorse for doing the ad and they only reconciled shortly before Kulp's death.[26]

Joe Carstairs, Fastest Woman on the Water
[quote]Throughout her life, Marion “Joe” Carstairs challenged assumptions and expectations of her proper place in society. An out-and-proud lesbian in a time when British women were still seen as extensions of their husbands’ property, the Standard Oil heir took advantage of her immense wealth and privilege and traveled the world, dated some of the world’s most beautiful and famous women, and, for a brief time in her illustrious life, became the world’s top female speedboat racer. Throwing herself wholeheartedly into the sport, Carstairs spent significant resources on attempting to build a motorboat capable of winning her the Harmsworth Trophy, the highest prize in motorboat racing at the time, and bringing her the respect of her competitors and detractors alike. Fastest Woman on the Water would explore Carstairs’s larger-than-life persona and the symbol of athletic validation that thrice eluded her.

Legendary rocker Joan Jett!
From Wikipedia: In a 2018 interview with the New York Times, when asked about how an LGBT film festival did not want to show her documentary because she was not "out", Jett said: "They don't want the movie there because I don't declare? [Holding up her necklace of a labrys] What the [expletive] is that? Two labryses, or axes, crossing each other, inside of two women's symbols crossing each other. It's not been off since I got it. And I wear this one every day. [She turns around, lifts her shirt and reveals a tattoo with similar female symbols on her lower back.] I don't know how much more you can declare."[97]

by Anonymous | reply 171 | September 26, 2021 6:16 AM |
Angela Lansbury is definitely not a lez. In fact, the only blemish on her otherwise-excellent LGBTQ+++++ record is that misguided quote from 2013 about women turning to lesbianism because there weren't enough men around -or something like that. It was a statement she later apologized for, confessing her own ignorance. Her first husband was gay, and she genuinely didn't know. She had a long and happy second marriage (with children). I know neither of those prove anything, of course -But just because she is a gay icon doesn't make her gay either.
There are plenty of wonderful, elder vagitarians out there -the group doesn't need her to shine. :)

One of the greatest and most legendary Elder Lezzies is responsible for some of the greatest and most subversive children’s literature of all time. Ursula Nordstrom ruled the world of children’s publishing for close to five decades at Harper Brothers and single handily discovered and promoted some of the greatest Lesbian and Gay children’s writers and illustrators of all time, culminating in Maurice Sendak whose portrait of her is here. Almost Elder Lezzies Margaret Wise Brown (Goodnight Moon, Runaway Bunny) and Louise Fitzhugh (Harriet the Spy and sequels) would have attained that status if they both hadn’t died young. She discovered Shel Silverstein in the pages of Playboy magazine from his irreverent cartoons. She said she wanted to make “good books for bad children.” And had one of the biggest bitch fights in the history of lesbians that lasted decades with the head of the NY Public Library’s children’s services with Anne Carrol Moore, who was a wicked, wicked cunt!

So, here’s my Nancy Culp story. In Pennsylvania, not far outside of Gettysburg there is a summer stock theater in a state forest called Totempole Playhouse that was owned and operated by well known homosexual William Putch and his wife Jean Stapleton, yes Edith Bunker was married to a gay man, and they had children. In 1984, the year after he died, Jean was carrying on with the season and as a young gayling theater nerd my parents took me to see “You Can’t Take it with You,” which they had both starred in during a high school production. Ms. Culp was in the audience that night and it was electric as she was leading up to the election and her name was everywhere again, although the theatre wasn’t technically in the voting district. At the intermission she was swarmed with admirers and then afterwards outside the theater in the woods a huge crowd gathered and she graciously chatted and shook hands with everyone and even I got to meet her and tell her how much my family loved The Beverly Hillbillies. It was very heady, as south central Pennsylvania didn’t have many known TV stars from Hollywood!

can't mention Ethel Waters and not point out....
Carson McCullers
McCullers fell in love with a number of women and pursued them sexually with great determination, but seems not to have succeeded in finding mutual attraction. Her most documented and extended love obsession was with Annemarie Schwarzenbach, of whom she once wrote "She had a face that I knew would haunt me for the rest of my life." In her autobiography, McCullers reports that the two shared one kiss. McCullers' passion, however, was not reciprocated, and the two remained friends with McCullers dedicating her next novel, Reflections in a Golden Eye, to her.[14][15] Sarah Schulman writes:
There is the infamous obsession with Katherine Anne Porter and a much-implied ongoing “friendship” with Gypsy Rose Lee. But if Carson ever actually had sex with a woman, even Tennessee [Williams] didn't hear of it. According to McCullers's brilliant biographer, Virginia Spencer Carr, Carson did brag to her male cousin that she'd had sex with Gypsy once. But if that was the case, she never mentioned it to any of her gay friends. In the absence of reciprocated lesbian love and the inability to consummate lesbian sex, McCullers still wore a lesbian persona in literature and in life. She clearly wrote against the grain of heterosexual convention, wore men's clothes, was outrageously aggressive in her consistently failed search for sex and love with another woman, and formed primary friendships with other gay people.[14

I just finished reading Colm Toibin’s novel about Thomas Mann called The Magician. He managed to basically repress his homosexuality, but it popped up in three of his six children. Erika Mann comes directly out of Cabaret and in fact ran very subversive cabarets in Germany and Switzerland. She asked Isherwood to marry her so she could get out of Germany and have British citizenship, he declined, but past her onto Auden who did and they remained married for life, though never lived together. She lead a fascinating life.

A wonderful Irene Ryan story!
My mother used to be the P.A. for Nancy Kulp back in the day when good ol Nance had the dough for a P.A. (post Parent Trap). Anyway, Nance had just gone through a very rigorous audition process in order to get the role of Ms. Jane Hathaway, on what would become the landmark televison series "The Beverly Hillbilly's". She was assigned a dressing room with an actress she had never heard of named one Ms. Irene Ryan. Well, Nance and Irene got along famously from the get go, though, apparantly, Nance was apprehensive about letting Irene know about her diggin the ladies, seeing as how Irene was 86 at the time, Nance suspected she might not take to kindly to having a lady co-star who liked to shave other gals Hams.
Well, how funny was it when after a long day of shooting, Irene packed up the castor oil and bag of hair that she always had with her and left the lot for the day. Nance thought that she had free reign of the trailer for the rest of the evening and invited a delightful Nubian extra named Puma into her trailer for some dinner and some hot finger fucking !!! Well no sooner had our girl Nance gotten up to her shoulder in Puma's girl than Irene walked in, Nance told my mom that she was caught "black handed" by dear granny herself. Well, Nance was ashamed and had it not been for her damned collatta ring gett ing caught on some of Puma's internal lady skin she would have had her arm out of her in an instant. Irene just looked at the tw o of them in their "compromising position" and chuckled. You could have knocked Nance over with a feather. Apparantly, she was bright red so Irene soothed her fears and told her not to worry, she was totally cool with the fact that Nance liked to bump waffles and then proceeded to lift up her skirt and show her the tiniest pair of balls that Nance had ever seen (granted, Nance probably didn't see too many balls in her day, but still). Irene then explained that while she was all lady, she happened to have be en born with a pair of vestigal testicals right underneath her clitoris.
Ever since then Irene and Nance remained busom pals til Irene's death in 1974 and Nance never revealed her secret, except to a few close personal friends. Now that is friendship!!
