Richard was considered handsome when he met Tom while in his late 30's. He still had the intense eyes and questionable haircut, but he was also stylish and successful (worked at WWD and had connections).

Here's one picture where the age difference doesn't look so pronounced. Not sure how far back this was, but obviously his illness made the age difference look a lot more than 13 years (plus Ford aged very well).
