Liberals have 1 elected so baring a majority for a party, Trudeau will get first dibs on forming the government
by Anonymous | reply 1 | September 20, 2021 11:13 PM |
Thanks, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 20, 2021 11:13 PM |
How goes the vote in Nunavut?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 20, 2021 11:16 PM |
Libs up in Newfoundland, b'y.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 20, 2021 11:23 PM |
R1 As the incumbient PM, Trudeau always had the first right to try and form a government. He doesn't stop being PM until he submits his resignation to the Governor General.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 20, 2021 11:23 PM |
Steady voting in Toronto when I was there mid afternoon. No significant delays.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 20, 2021 11:26 PM |
Oh boy, the Libs are struggling in Newfoundland. Not good.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 20, 2021 11:39 PM |
[...]
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 20, 2021 11:43 PM |
Does anyone know if the early numbers are going to be the advanced polls? Cons were believed to have done better on those.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 20, 2021 11:45 PM |
Is Trudeau mixed race?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 20, 2021 11:51 PM |
Those will counted tonight, R9. Mail in tomorrow.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 20, 2021 11:52 PM |
Conservative vote way up in Atlantic Canada. Not a good sign.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 21, 2021 12:19 AM |
R12 Yeah this is going to be close BUT remember tonight's results won't include mail in ballots which supposedly favour the liberals.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 21, 2021 12:22 AM |
It's over. Libs should be way, way, way stronger in Atlantic.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 21, 2021 12:26 AM |
Yeah CBC is saying very possibly we won't know the result until tomorrow
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 21, 2021 12:31 AM |
Four Liberal incumbents out already. Not good at all.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 21, 2021 12:32 AM |
But what does it's over mean? I think it could be a reduced minority but I don't see any evidence it's necessarily going to turn out to be a car crash.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 21, 2021 12:33 AM |
Poor weather midget Scott Sims! Quelle nuit!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 21, 2021 12:35 AM |
Liberals down 2 seats in the Atlantic so far...Cons up 4. NDP and Greens so far have lost their seats.......
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 21, 2021 12:36 AM |
The Liberals need like 30 seats in the Atlantic.
Scott Simms
Bernadette Jordon
Lenore Zann
all out already.
The Cons are picking up, all other parties, including the Liberals, are losing seats, R17.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 21, 2021 12:37 AM |
R18 It's very close in that riding .. I suspect Sims will win when the mail ballots are counted.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 21, 2021 12:37 AM |
Green collapse is complete in Atlantic Canada. They're a fringe/protest parking lot now.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 21, 2021 12:38 AM |
Before everyone freaks out....it is somewhat expected that Cons will appear to over perform tonight and then dip when the mail in votes are counted. Cons had a 7 point lead in the advanced polls.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 21, 2021 12:39 AM |
R21. I agree. I just wanted to type weather midget.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 21, 2021 12:39 AM |
CBC is saying turn out way lower than 2019....this could cost the Libs the election............
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 21, 2021 12:39 AM |
What is the basis for the believe the mailings are going to support the liberals?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 21, 2021 12:40 AM |
The Libs are OVER. OMG. I'm freaking out. I slam Trudeau sometimes, but I didn't actually want them to lose. JFC.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 21, 2021 12:40 AM |
R23, there's not a huge amount of mail in. Like 1 million for the whole country. Spread that out over 338 ridings.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 21, 2021 12:41 AM |
The other thing that depresses me this early in the proceedings is the emergence of the People's party as not putting on a bad show. I really had hoped that the vast majority of Canadians would be too embarrassed to ever vote for people like that. Maybe it to is just a protest/parking lot vote but it's still disappointing to me to see that.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 21, 2021 12:41 AM |
this will be decided in Ontario. too many tips to the conservatives and there is trouble coming.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 21, 2021 12:42 AM |
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 21, 2021 12:43 AM |
Could Cons can get a majority?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 21, 2021 12:45 AM |
I don't think so, R32. But wow, the Liberals aren't doing well so far. Yikes.
Hold me, David!

Can we get him to invade the Dakotas instead?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 21, 2021 12:52 AM |
I like Minority Governments.
That said : follow along live here. Québec polls closing... still a couple of hours left voting in BC. Check in very once in awhile to see how the Bloc is doing.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 21, 2021 12:52 AM |
What about Seamus O'Reagan?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 21, 2021 12:53 AM |
R40 Éric Grenier is saying that the mail in ballots will probably only make a difference in less than 15 riding
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 21, 2021 12:53 AM |
Can't R41. Biden kept the border closed. We have to be polite, eh?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 21, 2021 12:54 AM |
So Scott Simms is officially out. Yikes.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 21, 2021 12:55 AM |
R43... CBC has called his riding for him.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 21, 2021 12:55 AM |

R u sure Simms is out?
by Anonymous | reply 49 | September 21, 2021 12:56 AM |
R49 Seems that way....Cons are leading by well over 1000 votes and only 1100 mail in ballots in this riding........
by Anonymous | reply 50 | September 21, 2021 12:58 AM |
Yup.. 17 years down the drain. Good work, Justin.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 21, 2021 12:59 AM |
Wow. If the Newfies are voting Con, then that's something. Shit.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 21, 2021 1:00 AM |
It seems that a significant number of Green voters have moved to the Conservatives in the Atlantic provinces.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 21, 2021 1:01 AM |
Did O’Toole say that he would end CRB or CERB or whatever it is called?
by Anonymous | reply 54 | September 21, 2021 1:07 AM |
So gross. I can't even think of PM O'Toole.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | September 21, 2021 1:08 AM |
I have a really bad feeling about Ontario right now.......
by Anonymous | reply 56 | September 21, 2021 1:12 AM |
Same, R56. I don't think he's going to get a minority. O'Toole spent the last few days in the GTA. Maybe a smart move.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | September 21, 2021 1:13 AM |
R57 Even if Trudeau wins tonight, his political career is effectively over. He had to win a majority to survive this politically.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | September 21, 2021 1:14 AM |
Yup, R59.
The bright side for me is that if the NDP do poorly, the NDP might make Singh step down.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | September 21, 2021 1:16 AM |
I dislike Singh too. He behaves like a clown. He is not a serious person. He is more like a camp counsellor.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 21, 2021 1:17 AM |
Interestingly, the Liberal popular vote in Atlantic Canada is actually up but Conservative vote is more efficient and slightly higher than the polls were showing.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | September 21, 2021 1:19 AM |
O'Toole might be the only leader to survive as a result of this election even if he doesn't win the election...Cons are making seat gains in areas they didn't even really campaign in.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | September 21, 2021 1:21 AM |
CBC still calls 57% chance of a Liberal minority.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | September 21, 2021 1:25 AM |

Lori Idlout, of the NDP, is ahead with 51 percent of the vote (797 votes) in Nunavut aka the true north of the true north strong and free.
A brief profile of Lori from the Nunavut News:

So is the Toole going to resign?
by Anonymous | reply 103 | September 21, 2021 2:49 AM |
R103 I don't he's going to resign tonight but I think there's going to be a battle within the conservative party. The far right of the party is going to gang up and try to regain control.
Trudeau is weakened for sure.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | September 21, 2021 2:52 AM |
For sure, R104. Trudeau needs to go before the next election.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | September 21, 2021 2:53 AM |

This is Singh's second loss. The NDP always claim they're running to form government. He should be given the boot.
I'll bet that more than anyone Singh will be bitching about line ups to vote. He'll try and spin that angle more than the Cons.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | September 21, 2021 3:05 AM |
As in 2019, Cons appear likely to win the popular vote.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | September 21, 2021 3:07 AM |

My mussy is wet for Trudeau at the voting station today
by Anonymous | reply 117 | September 21, 2021 4:00 AM |
This election at this time seemed so pointless.
And I feel bad for the Elections Canada staff. It's like they were given 50,000 more tasks to do this election - on top of the pandemic.
by Anonymous | reply 118 | September 21, 2021 4:01 AM |
r117 Is the precum heavily flowing?!
by Anonymous | reply 119 | September 21, 2021 4:03 AM |
I wonder what the voter turnout will be in the end. I heard so many stories of line-ups in Toronto, plus the general apathy of voters, plus the pandemic, I am sure it will be a poor turnout.
I don't like O'Toole but he was out there campaigning, he was visible.
Trudeau and especially Singh just phoned it in. Singh's ads were basically him criticizing Trudeau. He had no platform, no slogan, no message. Very disappointing as I veer towards NDP.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | September 21, 2021 4:13 AM |
If you’re a conservative you’re a fuckng idiot. And likely an incel sociopath.
by Anonymous | reply 121 | September 21, 2021 4:16 AM |
R120 CBC was speculating that it was very low voter turnout.
by Anonymous | reply 122 | September 21, 2021 4:20 AM |
Why do Canadians call voting districts risings? A remnant of their subservience to Britain?
by Anonymous | reply 123 | September 21, 2021 4:28 AM |
Sorry, meant ridings
by Anonymous | reply 124 | September 21, 2021 4:28 AM |
I don't understand O'Toole's message, "we're not your fathers/grandfathers Conservative party." That's right. My grandfather was a Joe Clark fan. Joe Clark wasn't a right-wing loser like today's cons.

Will Trudeau present hole to keep his leadership?

Holy fuck, he's terrible, R126. I can't stand him.
by Anonymous | reply 128 | September 21, 2021 4:38 AM |
R123 Because Canada is a parliamentary democracy (a system that predates America) and parliamentary democracies call them ridings. And Canada has not been subservient to Britain since since 1931.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | September 21, 2021 4:40 AM |
Basically what this was was a plea to keep him as leader because there will be an election sooner rather than later in a minority.

Flat, cliched, brief speech. He'll last a year and then announce. This was all for nothing. He's arguably weakened the party for next time. And that cloying, hammy diction.

R111 The Conservatives won something like 34% of the popular vote and the Liberals about 33% or thereabouts.
16 % voted for the NDP which is further to the Left than the Liberals.
The Bloc Québécois coming in at 8% define themselves as Centre -Left -again to the left of the Federal Liberals.
Add the 6% who vote Green and one can see about 60% of the Canadian voters are reluctant to vote for the Cons.
Maxime Bernier the Former Conservative minister who led the FAR right People's Party of Canada was defeated in his own riding of Beauce, Québec. The PPC garnered almost 2%.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | September 21, 2021 5:35 AM |
Great news! Trudeau is still the PM. Well done Canada for electing a progressive. All Scandinavian countries are now run by social democrats. Add Canada electing a Liberal and Germany most likely electing a social democrat in a week. Things are looking good.

R144 I suspect when the mail in ballots are counted tomorrow, the Liberals will have narrowly won the popular vote.

by Anonymous | reply 156 | September 21, 2021 5:53 AM |
Not so sure. When the results come in with virtually nothing changed it says to me people were just not in the mood for this. He's got one more kick at the can. His problem will be they'll be a new liberal leader by then.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 21, 2021 5:53 AM |
The polls were pretty accurate this time. I thought the BQ would drop a few seats, but, as it turned out, this election was 2019's identical twin.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | September 21, 2021 5:57 AM |
So... most countries in Europe now have social democrat leaders.... Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Spain, Portugal, hopefully Germany soon. And Canada will continue with a Liberal leader. WTF is the UK doing? Why can't Labour win there? It's odd.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | September 21, 2021 6:39 AM |
R159, Labour is an inept and corrupt party which means it can’t even use the spoils of its corruption to achieve or even contend for electoral victory in any coherent manner. If the nation as a whole had proper inclination and senses it would select the boring Liberal Democrats.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | September 21, 2021 6:55 AM |
Even I, an American, saw this coming for months.
Most polls had CPC up by only 1-2%. That was never gonna be enough to unseat Trudeau.
Trudeau & Singh are like frenemies. NDP would rather die than work with conservatives.
UKIP...I mean...PPC also pulled voters away from the cons. LOL

Yes, that Irishman at R165 was supposed to representing Rotherham until he was sacked for rorting the system and claiming false expenses.
He turned a blind eye to all the rapes because he wanted to support the rapists and "not wanting to rock the multicultural community boat".

Macshane is one of the most corrupt men in Britain.
Trudeau called an expensive and unnecessary election in the middle of a pandemic because of his inflated ego, sure he would get a majority.
He's short of one again, the Conservatives didn't do nearly as badly as assumed, on 122 seats, and Trudeau will still have to fight for his agenda.
He should have paid attention to what happened to Theresa May.

[quote]Liberals have a minority BUT have enough seats together with NDP to get the votes needed on a case by case basis. I don't see the problem here as the two agree on most issues.
Pros
- They worked reasonably well before (which was part of the reason everybody with a brain though the election was so self-serving) and are usually closer in view than apart - The NDP is broke. It spend $25M on the campaign and mortgaged the office it owns downtown Ottawa. That's a big war chest to rebuild in a quick time frame and the usual life of a minority is eighteen months. - Trudeau (or the next leader) cannot threaten a new election. This one sent a message. The Liberal government needs to be brought down by the House (to blame the others) or go four years. That will make the Liberals nervous. You don't want it to go too well. Every party wants a majority. - The Conservatives may get involved in an ugly leadership campaign a year from now, when the mandated leadership review is held. If O'Toole goes, it all starts over. Makes it possible for Parliament to just hum along.
Cons
- the NDP campaigned hard left on tax the rich. Canada's rich aren't America's rich. There's always the risk concessions to the NDP on tax go too far... and Liberal base is wide and moderate. They may find it hard to find agreement on some issues. But as the Liberals can't threaten a new election, the other parties better have a damn good reason to send us back to the polls too soon. - The Liberal whispering campaign against Trudeau will begin, weakening him further. The ambitious will be sharpening their knives or choosing their horses. The NDP can just sit back and enjoy the show. - political impulses. The bad judgment that made the Liberals ask for a majority flows through every party. Impatience, frustration, power hunger, ego... these things tend not to sit patiently when it's so easy to bring down a government. Trudeau shouldn't have called this one, obviously, but he did. No other politician is immune to illogic either. - If the Conservatives do get a new leader he or she may be particularly vulnerable to the desire to go to the polls.
I think the Liberal strategy will be to choose two or three major pieces of legislation they can tweak with the NDP and move them forward slowly, buying time until there is a leadership contest within the Liberals. There is no basis to believe Trudeau can put lightning in a bottle where his popularity is concerned. Minority government is tricky... it can't work too well or it's hard to argue you need a majority, without a major policy platform robust like Chretien's first Red Book. Bring on the vote too soon and you're saddled with 'Canadians are going to the polls again...' The pundits all agree one of Trudeau's major failings was his inability to make a convincing argument for this call at this time. If O'Toole hadn't screwed up on the vaccine file and guns, things might have been very different when you look at what Atlantic Canada did.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | September 21, 2021 3:17 PM |

R216, I'd bet that was strategic voting. Provincially, downtown is pretty heavily NDP and City Council is loaded with them. CBC pointed out last night the urban centres of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver are Liberal strongholds. I can't remember the last time my riding wasn't Liberal federally. I didn't vote because I didn't want to appear to support JT, who I think isn't up to the top job, but I knew my MP wasn't anywhere near risk.

In O'Toole's speech last night he was banging on about how open and inclusive the CPC is and everyone is welcome. There have not been any challenges in parliament to prove just how open the CPC is. Equal marriage is a long done deal. Abortion will never be revisited. Immigration is what has built Canada. O'Toole can talk about how inclusive the CPC is but when one of their candidates knocks on my door and she says, "I tolerate your lifestyle" that tells me all I need to know about their inclusiveness.

Yes. He said the CPC can't be a party of the past but can learn from it. He's trying very hard to erase the fact that the CPC was born from a Reform party take over of the PC Party and it's only existence was to remove any equality Canadians once had.

A woman I've known for decades told me she voted for the CPC candidate. She says she's tired of the gov't telling her what to do and we no longer have any freedom. Apparently if she doesn't want a vaccine she shouldn't have to get one and she should be able to travel where she wants when she wants. According to her we live in China not Canada. When I pointed out that if she lived in China she wouldn't have a choice of who to vote for and would not be able to complain about the gov't she stared at me with a blank look.

I live in Winnipeg and I think that the Conservatives under a pragmatic-seeming socially liberal leader like O’Toole should do better in Winnipeg’s suburban belt ridings than they did, especially since everyone is angry at Trudeau for calling this election.
But the pandemic has really soured Winnipeggers against the governing provincial Conservative party led until recently by Brian Pallister, who sailed into re-election with a big majority in 2019 and whose name is now mud, and more troublingly really highlighted the shocking cultural differences between us and much of rural southern Manitoba, which really has shown itself to be a hotbed of far-right lunacy and the most vaccine-resistant part of the country.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | September 21, 2021 4:38 PM |
This is something I believe and that surfaced in a lot of the post game commentary: The Liberals are vulnerable to the accusation of arrogance (that speaks for itself) and the Conservatives, since Harper and the unification of the two strains of Conservatism) are vulnerable to issues of trust. O'Toole flip flopped, which isn't the worse sin, but he also completely failed on a tough, sensible stance on COVID and vaccines (he wouldn't even make his candidates be vaccinated) and then he went off on that tangent about guns that really hurt. And there you are, back at can we trust them? I think in the end the Conservatives will settle for being opposition forever... they can't seem to get comfortable with the centre.

There is one constant: 60% of Canadian voters continued to vote Liberal or even further Left.
Conservatives are all pissy about the cost and the lack of change.
CPC's problem is with the way Canadians voted and wouldn't have given two shits about the $$$ if the outcome was they way they had hoped.
Conservatives are desperate to distract from their FAILURE to come up with policies that would appeal to voters enough to give them a chance at governing.
So voters bit their tongues and stuck with Trudeau and the Liberals.
Bottom line: How great is it that an election can be called and just over 35 days later its all over- the results are in - paper ballots, all those pencils and all.

When people discuss gay, the word typically refers and encompasses exclusively to "gay men". Lesbians and gays are viewed as two different groups of people.
And I'm pretty sure a number of gay men, even of today's generation, wouldn't be much thrilled to be mingled with lesbians.

1/2 Canadians woke up Tuesday to the news that a divisive and disruptive federal election campaign had produced little more than a sense of déjà vu.
The overall results are so similar to those of the 2019 election that it requires a magnifying glass to see the difference. As of Tuesday afternoon, with some votes still outstanding, no party had gained or lost more than two seats, and no seat-holding party other than the free-falling Greens saw a shift in their popular vote of more than two percentage points.
What’s also familiar about the result is that it has given Canada yet another minority government. Since 1962, 10 out of 20 federal elections have produced minorities; since 2004, the count is five out of seven.
Welcome to the age of the minority government. With the NDP, Greens and Liberals stealing votes from each other, the People’s Party stealing from the Conservatives and the Bloc Québécois having stolen from everybody, it is more difficult than ever for any single party to win the magical 170 seats that confers a Parliamentary majority.
And yet the parties – especially the Liberals and Conservatives, the only two that under various evolving names and guises have ever formed government – continue to covet and strive for majority power, as if a minority were just an empty participation prize.
Stephen Harper twice concocted reasons to dissolve Parliaments in which he led a minority Conservative government, in 2008 and 2011, in his pursuit of the majority he finally won. Justin Trudeau did the same in triggering this election, when he thought he saw an opening to upgrade his minority to a majority.
He miscalculated, but it’s easy to understand why he went for it. There is almost no government in the democratic world that is more powerful, and less subject to the usual opposition checks, than a Canadian parliamentary majority.
A party holding more than half the seats in the House of Commons can control almost every aspect of Parliament, from the committees to the proceedings of the House. Government bills face little meaningful opposition on their journey from conception to royal assent. Add to that the power to name senators and Supreme Court judges, and being the prime minister of a majority government in Canada provides a level of (albeit temporary) omnipotence that can leave a PM feeling like Louis XIV.
But as much as prime ministers past, present and future would like you to believe otherwise, the truth is that the absence of a majority doesn’t mean things can’t get done.
Mr. Trudeau was hardly hamstrung by his previous government’s minority status. He was able to pass a budget, bring in hundreds of billions of dollars of COVID-19 relief, launch a program to provide low-cost child care for Canadians, and enshrine into law a commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
by Anonymous | reply 251 | September 22, 2021 11:58 AM |
The things Mr. Trudeau failed to do while he was in power during the pandemic, such as enforcing proper border controls, introducing a federal vaccine mandate or speedily creating a common federal vaccine passport, were not the result of his government’s minority status. He had the power; his government simply chose not to use it.
And yet he sold the need for a snap election on the grounds that Parliament had become too divisive to continue. Canadians weren’t buying it. By the time of his (sort of) victory speech in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, even Mr. Trudeau had entirely dropped that pretense.
The makeup of the new Parliament will be almost exactly the same as the old Parliament, in terms of the mix of seats, which means with a little effort the Liberals can govern, and produce and pass legislation.
There were interesting ideas introduced during the campaign that ended Monday: the Liberal climate change plan; the NDP’s pharmacare and dental care plans; the Conservatives’ tax credit for low-income workers. The government could find parliamentary support for any and all of them.
Co-operation is possible, if the will is there. Lester Pearson’s two Liberal minority governments from 1963 to 1968 made modern Canada, bringing in a new flag, the Canada Pension Plan and national medicare.
Mr. Trudeau should this time show more respect for the capacity of minority governments to advance the interests of Canadians, instead of waiting around for the moment to try to advance his own.

To put things in perspective, just go back to the 2011 Election. The Liberals had been reduced to 3rd Place. They had lost multiple elections under failed leaders like Paul Martin, Stéphane Dion and Michael Ignatiefff. Then came Justin Trudeau. He brought them from 3rd Place to 1st in 2015. And then brought the Liberals two more wins in 2019 & 2021. The last Liberal leader to win 3 elections in a row is Jéan Chrétien. The 2019 & 2021 elections may only have been Minorities, compared to the Majority in 2015, but Trudeau has put the Liberals back in the center of power for the first time since the Chrétien years.

Hebert in the Star: "For his part, Justin Trudeau is widely seen by Liberal insiders and observers alike as having entered the legacy stage of his tenure. That’s usually a time when leaving one’s mark on the country comes to matter more than electoral machinations. That’s not so much because he failed to secure a majority on Monday as because he is now a third-term prime minister.
Up to a point, all politicians are at the mercy of the unexpected. Trudeau’s tenure to date — featuring as it has the Trump presidency and the pandemic — certainly lived up to that adage
But in the normal course of events, few expect him to lead the party into a risky fourth campaign. It won’t happen tomorrow, but many believe he will decide to leave the stage at some point down the road in his third term."
Though with that ego I wouldn't be surprised if he did try for a fourth go. He didn't have the sense to avoid this expensive, pointless go round... you worry sense won't visit him in time to prevent a fourth.

Stephen Harper won three in a row, as well, didn't he? A majority and two minorities. As I recall, Chretien delivered three consecutive majorities.
Just to put things further in perspective.

R250 how can you expect anyone to take anything you post seriously when you use childish name calling? You sound like every unhinged right winger I have to deal with on a daily basis who can't point to one thing Trudeau has done to negatively impact their lives, but they're convinced he's a terrible PM. What have you accomplished with your life, besides posting on Datalounge?
by Anonymous | reply 258 | September 22, 2021 1:45 PM |
Oh, now, R258, I expect people to discern the point underneath the occasional self-indulgence. I'm sorry the hairdo didn't work out for you but am delighted it got under your skin or up your nose of wherever the irritant of reality landed in your system, because that was part of the fun too.
Incidentally, how do you expect anyone to take anything you post seriously when you rely on broad stroke assessments and assumptions of being right wing against everybody who doesn't agree with you?
He's a pretty mediocrity. Try a strong antacid.

Putting R260 on ignore shows how obsessed he is with Trudeau. He was all over the other two election treads as well.
He's like that fat ugly closet case who harasses the guy he desperately wants to fuck. It's sad.

R245 it seems like hubris at this point? I’m not really sure. I know a number of people in her riding who had really high hopes for her as she’s a smart, accomplished, multilingual black woman, but she doesn’t seem to be any good at political gladhanding and reading the room, so to speak? The people I knew who liked her a lot at first did not vote for her this time.
by Anonymous | reply 267 | September 22, 2021 8:32 PM |
Whatever her personal qualities - and she seemed incredibly agile and articulate in the debate - nobody even knows what the Green Party is in Canada. It's a tough job for anybody. I don't see how you make it fly.

The Liberals are now confirmed to have won a 2nd seat in Alberta, this one in Edmonton Centre.
Randy Boissonnault is openly-gay and is a Rhodes Scholar.
He previously held the seat between 2015-2019.

From the Globe this morning: And for the second election in a row, the winning Liberals obtained fewer votes than the party they defeated. With 32.5 per cent of the vote at time of writing, the Liberals have the weakest mandate of any government in our history, breaking the record set … in 2019. Coupled with near-record low turnout – at 60 per cent, second only to 2008′s dismal result – the governing party can claim the support of fewer than one in five eligible voters.
by Anonymous | reply 274 | September 23, 2021 12:47 PM |
The Mop & Pail is still banging on about popular vote. Even O'Toole has given up on that bit of idiocy. Popular votes don't form governments, number of seats do.
[quote]he governing party can claim the support of fewer than one in five eligible voters
And the CPC can claim that support as well.

Seat count has been update with 159 going to Trudeau - if he gets 160, he would only be 10 seats short of a majority

R277 & R278, the extra seat that the Liberals picked up is in Quebec. It's the riding of Brome-Missisquoi which the Bloc was narrowly leading in after Election Night but which went Liberal yesterday when the final mail ballots were counted.
It moves the Liberals ahead of the BQ in Quebec.

by Anonymous | reply 283 | September 25, 2021 6:56 AM |
I don't know why people think the two Michael were just hapless Canadians, randomly kidnapped by China. The one is super sketchy and had all kinds of ties to North Korea.

[quote] If the 2 Michaels had been released last week, it might have helped Trudeau win a Majority.
And Conservatives & Trudeau Haters would claim Trudeau tried to "rig" the election by having them released last week - and that would follow Trudeau for years
So better that they be released AFTER the election - cleaner that way

Annamie Paul is stepping down as Green Party leader
by Anonymous | reply 294 | September 28, 2021 9:56 AM |
She was a bad choice, I think. She is intelligent and articulate and principled, obviously. She shone in the debate. But if even a quarter of the back story is true about how she acted as leader of the party she was not right for the job. My career has forced me to interact with a lot of activists and advocates. They spend so much time in echo chambers they soon forget the most important thing: even if their cause or POV is right, they probably still have to convince people to come along with them. And these days, in this environment, that doesn't happen a lot because if you don't agree you're just some adjective for stupid or immoral. You don't get people to join you by looking down your nose at them. I don't know if this applied to Paul, publicly or privately, but I wouldn't be surprised. And it doesn't work. If you want to lead a modern day revolution (after a fashion) you have to communicate like a Roosevelt or an MLK or a Reagan or a Bill Clinton or a Tony Blair or a Barak Obama. The job of the Green Party in Canada is to make itself understood as a viable entity. All anybody knew about Paul was the drama.
by Anonymous | reply 295 | September 28, 2021 1:02 PM |
I like how others are suggesting that Trudeau send Paul to Glasgow after she called him a fake feminist and went after Freeland.

I voted Liberal, and I think Chahal should step down immediately for a by-election with a new Liberal candidate. But that won't happen.
by Anonymous | reply 300 | September 29, 2021 3:54 AM |
Same here, R300. He needs to go. Elections Canada is investigating. For the good of the party, he needs to go. Trudeau can't tolerate this, it'll just be another scandal hanging over their heads.
by Anonymous | reply 301 | September 29, 2021 3:56 AM |
What pisses me off about the hard core Liberals on Twitter is that they always defend this kind of shit, just as how they were defending that Kevin Voung. It's so fucking weak and Trump like and bad for the party. Of course, most of the Liberals on Twitter aren't really Liberals, they're just Trudeau stans and don't give a shit about the party beyond him.

by Anonymous | reply 304 | September 29, 2021 7:16 AM |
I'm surprised Chahal would do something so stupid as to remove his opponent's campaign literature from mailboxes. He ran a successful campaign in Alberta as a Liberal, which is hard to do. He would have been guaranteed a cabinet position. And he throws it all away?
by Anonymous | reply 305 | September 29, 2021 10:08 AM |
If Trudeau does the right thing and pulls Chahal the Liberals could still win in a by election.
