Barney Stinson on HIMYM. The actor playing him was also too plain to attract women.

Walter Matheau was ridiculously poor casting for the film where Ingrid Bergman was in love with him and Goldie Hawn was suicidal over him leaving her ( I'm having a momentary blank on the films title and am too lazy to google).

The film was Cactus Flower

I disagree in part but I can see what you mean. Goldie was playing the part of a girl attracted to an older man who was rich, stable and well off, things she was not.
On the other hand both Goldie Hawn and Ingrid Bergman is way out of there. If the older woman had been more realistic, I think it would be better.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 18, 2021 12:06 AM |
Klinger was the crossdresser on MASH, Hawkeye was the obedient manservant :)

Uhh who would Beleive Jack Tripper as a laides man? The premise of the show worked because it was Ritter pinged to high heaven.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 18, 2021 12:08 AM |
R9, Ritter always pinged to me on that show. I was surprised that when he died he left a family behind.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 18, 2021 12:56 AM |
Didn't Larry just wait for the ladies to get super liquored up at the Regal Beagle?
I always figured the ladies in that dive would consider any man a "Ladies Man" when he's not a midget, has all his teeth and hair and it's Last Call for the night.

Inspector Morse was a bitter elderly alcoholic yet always had a lady who inevitably wound up dead.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 18, 2021 1:04 AM |
R12 Maybe that's why he was so bitter!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 18, 2021 1:11 AM |
r9 and r10 There was a book called " You'll Never Make Love in this Town Again." It was a bunch of recollections of LA hookers describing encounters with actors and other celebrities. There was a chapter about John Ritter and what a great client he was.

Inspector Morse was a bitter elderly alcoholic yet always had a lady who inevitably wound up dead.
I could see Morse's appeal. He was smart, classy, not unattractive, soulful, and wounded. John Thaw was only 60 when he died, but yes, Morse always seemed older than that.

John Ritter was "cute" in a way but was always a little too chubby. And he was IN NO WAY attractive enough to have every single woman on the show throwing themselves at him.
But you MIGHT believe him a lady's man whilst Larry was just awful.

by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 18, 2021 8:07 PM |
Dennis Leary on "Rescue Me".
Several ridiculously hot men on that show, yet fuggo Dennis was the one who had every woman supposedly throwing themselves at him, ready to kill themselves and each other over him, and seemingly unable to resist spontaneously ripping off their clothes and jumping on his always-hard dick at the mere sight of him.

Jimmy Stewart. He was not average, he was below ugly.
And the idea of Grace Kelly chasing after him. He wasn't even Donna Reed good-looking enough.

Tony Soprano was always scoring gorgeous women without even trying. Come on, are we supposed to believe that? Yeah maybe he was charismatic, but James Gandolfini was not exactly an Adonis.

To be fair, that sort of mirrors Rex Harrison (aka Ugly as Sin) and his relationships with women (he was married six times), in particular blonde starlet Carole Landis (who committed suicide when Harrison wouldn't divorce his wife and marry her.) All of his wives were fairly attractive, and his fourth also killed herself after Harrison divorced her.

I never follow baseball, but I had a thing for Alex Rodriguez in the late '90s, when he was in his twenties and on the Seattle Mariners. My brother is a sports nut and I sometimes would watch with him if I found a player attractive. A-Rod was baby-faced but masculine, with green eyes, luscious lips, and a nice butt. For some reason, he became really hideous (in looks and behavior) after he moved to NYC to play for the Yankees. Go figure!

I don't think Frasier was considered a ladies man. He was rich, successful and cultured but managed to fuck up and sabotage most of the times he tried to get laid. That said, straight women can get past looks for the aforementioned qualities and he wasn't hideous. Frasier was actually presented as bumbling in the love department.

Some of these are ridiculous. Matt LeBlanc is stunningly handsome. So is Mikhail Baryshnikov, plus he has a ballet dancer's superass.
But even so, gay men always make the mistake that being a ladies' man has to do solely with being handsome. It does not: straight women are mostly not as obsessed with looks as gay men are. They are more turned on by confidence and charisma.

It didn't help that he was often referred to as being 'gorgeous' by Diane and the other women he bedded. It's one thing to be attracted to his personality, but the show tried to sell Sam Malone as a studly jock, too.

Larry was never really supposed to be taken seriously as a ladies man; he was the funny sleazy sidekick who would joke about spilling wine to get women out of their clothes. In today’s terms he’d be a date rapist.
