Woman tied to dog dragged to death by San Francisco train
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A woman who had a dog tethered to her waist with a leash was dragged to death by a train in San Francisco, transit officials said Tuesday.
The woman had boarded a Bay Area Rapid Transit train at Powell Station with her dog and as the doors were about to close she stepped out but the dog stayed on the train. As the train took off, she was dragged, pulled onto the tracks and killed Monday, BART officials said in a statement. The dog was not injured.
The woman appeared to be waving at someone moments before the train started moving, officials said.
“This is a tragic loss of life, and we are following all safety protocols,” said BART Spokesperson Alicia Trost.
BART Police have reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses. BART’s chief safety officer is working with the National Transportation Safety Board, which is assisting in the investigation.
Mike Sim, told KGO-TV, he saw the woman being dragged and spoke to a man who was hysterical on the platform and who told him the woman killed was his girlfriend.
“It was pretty grotesque because all the way down the platform ... there was a bloodstain, about an inch and half wide, all the way down," he said.

Who tethers a leash to their waist? That's asking for trouble - even a flight of stairs could cause serious injury.

I think he planned it all along.
He probably hated her, and that's why he stayed on the train.
That dog knew what he was doing.

I wanted to say what R5 said. Thank Dog the dog is ok. It’s an awful death, but the woman should have known better than to toe the leash around her waist, and I’m glad her decision didn’t injure the dog.

If I WERE stupid enough to tether the dog to my waist, the FIRST thing I'd do when standing up, before entering or exiting, would be to reel the dog in tightly on one wrist, so that this doesn't happen.
Also: I didn't realize dogs were permitted on the B.A.R.T.

I have a leash for my dog that I wear cross-body. I sometimes have trouble with dropping the leash, and I live in a downtown neighborhood and my dog is small. Having the leash over my shoulder and around my torso keeps him from taking off when I drop the leash. When I take him on the light rail he is in his carrier, and when he is walking I hold the leash to keep him at heel - especially when crossing the street.
If he was too big for a carrier on the light rail I would be absolutely certain that I had him pulled up close on the leash when getting on and off the train. A train platform is a dangerous place for a dog, even outside of this circumstance.

There’s a sweet elderly guy who walks his dog in my neighborhood with the leash tethered around his waist. It’s a tiny dog, like a Shih Tzu. He has limited mobility in his arms and shoulders, and it’s much easier for him.
Seriously, this is probably terrible for the dog, it must know on some level it’s owner is dead. Dogs are such devoted creatures.

I’ve dogsat for my parents before and their dog definitely knows when they’re not around. I spoil him and he still lives his life and finds enjoyment but he’s always kind of bummed out when his parents aren’t around. I watched him for two weeks once and he never stopped missing them. He’ll kind of just sit down and mope sometimes and every time he heard a noise he’d go check the door. The dog will be sad but it will be able to get on with its life. It will be okay.
