I think he dieted r39. He was slim again for a long, long time so his weight loss wasn't the result of illness. He must have really let himself go to get as fat as he did and was probably eating complete crap. Once you cut the crap out of your diet, it's not that difficult to lose weight.

His image was cultivated to be that of an impeccably groomed sophisticated scruffy guy in his early 40s. He is now two decades beyond that and trying to keep looking that way. It's bound to get awkward at some point with or without disfiguring surgeries.

I actually had a similar encounter with John Kerry on Capitol Hill.

He was scheduled to speak at an event. He was late. We waited a long time but the senator slated to speak next had been waiting past their time and was angry because she was behind schedule, so she went on. Kerry arrived and was livid that someone was speaking during his slot. I told him that she would only be speaking for a minute or two and then we would be next. He looked at one of his orbiting aides and said "Who is THIS?" They apologized to him and repeated to him what I said as if my words had had no meaning. It gave me a really bizarre feeling.
