Some people pronounce this "eK-seTera" instead of "eT-seDera".

Oh, dear!

by Anonymousreply 1September 10, 2021 7:09 PM

Go axe somebody who cares.

by Anonymousreply 2September 10, 2021 7:11 PM

et-SET-era

by Anonymousreply 3September 10, 2021 7:11 PM

And yer you, too, are pronouncing it wrong.

by Anonymousreply 4September 10, 2021 7:15 PM

R3 is right. Two t sounds. If you say it with a d sound your head needs to be shot off.

by Anonymousreply 5September 10, 2021 7:21 PM

[quote] Two t sounds. If you say it with a d sound your head needs to be shot off.

Google dictionary says first is "T" and second is "D". (Google "et cetera" and dictionary shows up on first page)

The people who say "eksetera" are the same people who say "ekspecially" and "ekspresso".

And ASTERICK and AXE (for "ask.")

by Anonymousreply 13September 10, 2021 8:55 PM

Merriam-Webster has the correct pronunciation.

I use "et al," so this conversation is irrelevant to me.

by Anonymousreply 15September 10, 2021 8:57 PM

R14 that sounds more like an American pronunciation. But let's not get into the water vs water debate..

by Anonymousreply 16September 10, 2021 8:58 PM

et. al. is usually for people, not things.

by Anonymousreply 17September 10, 2021 8:59 PM

Que Sera Sera

by Anonymousreply 18September 10, 2021 9:01 PM

Not the same, R15.

by Anonymousreply 19September 10, 2021 9:51 PM

Anyone who would say EKcetera would say "let me ax you something". In other words a dumb mook.

by Anonymousreply 20September 10, 2021 9:54 PM

Oh for fuck's sake. What a fascinating poll!

And by the way, while we are being pedantic and oh-dearish, "et al." has only one period, not two.

by Anonymousreply 21September 10, 2021 9:56 PM

What about Peter Cetera (formerly of Chicago)?

If you're a hillbilly cannibal and talking about someone named Albert, it has no periods.

Only one is correct.

R24---was that a joke? Who is the hillbilly? Ignorant cunt.

Latin says that you pronounce the "t" twice and there is no "d".

by Anonymousreply 28September 11, 2021 8:39 AM

Wrong combination OP.

It’s “et cætera”

Pronunciation Et-Setera in every day normal language.

In the “restituted pronunciation” ( used since 1959) it would be:

“Et- Ka-hey-tera”

by Anonymousreply 29September 11, 2021 11:53 AM

r27 is humor-impaired. Think about it, sweetie.

by Anonymousreply 30September 11, 2021 6:13 PM

And spare a thought for those who spell it "ect."

by Anonymousreply 31September 11, 2021 6:58 PM

[quote]And spare a thought for those who spell it "ect."

Never! For it is written that such wickedness shall not be forgiven; neither in this age, nor in the age to come. And the same goeth for those who spell tongue. "tounge".
