Phil Collins Suffering from Health Problems, can 'Barely Hold’ Drum Sticks
(CNN) Phil Collins says he is no longer able to play the drums due to health issues.
The musician, who is 70, appeared on BBC Breakfast with his Genesis band members to promote the group's reunion tour, and Collins said his son, Nic Collins, will be drumming with the band going forward.
As for not drumming, Collins said, "I'd love to but you know, I mean, I can barely hold a stick with this hand. So there are certain physical things that get in the way."
He admitted that he'd love to be up there playing with his son, saying, "I'm kind of physically challenged a bit which is very frustrating because I'd love to be playing up there with my son." Instead, he will will sing with the band.
When this upcoming tour, delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic, ends, Collins isn't sure if he'll be touring any longer.
"We're all men of our age, and I think to some extent, I think it probably is putting it to bed," he said. "I think yeah, I think just generally for me, I don't know if I want to go out on the road anymore."
Collins had had a series of fractures over the years and in 2015 underwent back surgery which left him with nerve damage. In 2017 he fell, which resulted in him using a cane to assist with walking.

Great. He'll go on tour, catch Covid, which if it doesn't kill him will rip holes in his lungs so he won't be able to sing OR drum.

That’s not news. He explained health reasons many years ago. Maybe it’s just PR to explain why his son is there.

His songs were a major part of my life growing up. He was one of my favourite singers. I’m glad he’ll still be singing at least.

R2 I would have put his stick through all the gears. I love Phil. Some artists get too popular and too ubiquitous for their own good, and then we hate them for it. I think he’s come out in top. The music holds and the artistry and talent was unique for its time.

Phil has been like this for years. I don’t know why it’s being reported as if it’s news. He already did a two year solo tour sitting in a chair. His problems started when he dislocated some vertebrae on the last Genesis reunion tour in 2007.

70 is a bit young to be that immobilized. Can you imagine Jane Fonda in that condition? And she’s got, what, 15 years on Phil Collins?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 21, 2021 3:55 PM

I agree, R27. Is this a genetic condition or did he live hard as a young man? He seems at least 10 years ahead of where he should be, aging-wise.

This like many other old acts is just another last-minute money grab before they go. I would not pay money to see these geriatric men sitting in a chair on stage. Grace Slick had it right and refused to tour with Jefferson Starship after a certain age.

He could barely hold a tune when he was well. But that's just my opinion. He always seemed to be one rock star who wasn't in love with himself, and jetting off to the poorest nations on earth in private planes to tell us how woke he was.

R1, the ex-wife isn't living with him at all. She kicked him out of his house. The divorce wreaked havoc on him, and that's why he needs to tour again. Do old men really think those much-younger women love them for their personality and looks?
I am a fan of his music, and I don't understand why so many people treat him as a joke. I like some of the songs that I never heard on the radio, like the instrumental, "The Brazilian".

In (northern) summer 1991, Michael Hutchence (as part of INXS) was selling out Wembley Stadium and Madison Square Garden. By December, Smells Like Teen Spirit was released and grunge ruled. MH didn't get to be Elvis for very long himself. August 1992 a traumatic brain injury pretty much completely changed him. No more hit songs, no more big concerts, no more happy times apart from his daughter being born. Do INXS get much airplay outside Australia?

Nic is very attractive and an excellent drummer. These photos are a few years old.
The other son Phil had with the crazed plastic surgery addict is a blond with blue eyes.
The thread here about the gold digger 'lady man' is hilarious. The ex-wife looks like Chrissy Teigen on crack who applied her makeup with a trowel.

Nick Collins is gorgeous and sexy and an excellent drummer. Must be weird to be only 21 years old and have to learn the entire freaking Genesis catalogue, though. I can’t think of a band less likely to resonate with people that age. I bet there’s not a single person under 40 at any of these shows.

True r58. Genesis and Phil Collins have not translated at all to younger generations. Hell, I was a kid in the 80s and my own generation thought they were pretty lame. It was our parents' Boomer generation who were really into them. And god were those songs played NON-STOP back then. You couldn't get away from them. In fact you still hear a lot of Phil Collins' solo stuff today.

That's not true that Genesis and Phil Collins have no youth appeal. Collins became a byword for uncool in the 1990s but his image has been rehabbed over time.

Along those lines R65 ,I knew a lovely Canadian lady in her early 50s who was wooed by a rich older guy in his early 70s. He had a lovely house in Fernandina Bch,and one in St. Pete ,as well as plenty of money in the bank. Long story short, she married him though she really had reservations ,and within a year he had signed everything over to his kids and admitted he had been diagnosed with Parkinsons before he had met her. She was BITTER. His kids hated her too ,so her life was a nightmare. She even had to go back to work as he had very little left in the bank. When she called me and told me all about it I said "Honey, fuck that ! Divorce his ass and let his fucking kids handle it!" but she was too nice for her own good I guess cause shes still there.

Phil was still fairly youthful looking and physically healthy when he married the gold digging lady man, Orianne Cevey, in 1999.
Phil and Orianne before she mangled her face and body with various horrific plastic surgeries. Orianne now looks like a transexual and NOT a very convincing one!
As for Phil's payout to Lady Man, how can anyone wipe out $45+ MILLION in a few years?! 🤯🤯 Sheer insanity.

Those two kids on YouTube are at least open minded about older rock and pop music. At least they make an effort to listen and don't immediately dismiss it.
I hope they are also aware that a lot of rock music has been sampled by Rap and Hip-Hop performers.
