Days Before the 20th Anniversary, 2 more Victims of the 9/11 Attacks are Identified

40 percent remain unidentified doesn't mean that their families aren't certain that they died in the WTC, of course.

They should probably shut this operation down. There are better things to spend tax dollars on.

Oh My Gawd.
What if we have to wait this long for the definitive results on the hiker family? DL will have a collective nervous breakdown.
Wonder what that 20th Anniversary Thread will look like.

Don't worry, there will be more dead hikers to grab DL's imagination.

Sounds like someone is pushing for some results after years of inertia.

Surprised that 40% of remains remain unidentified. Does it mean there's not enough of the remains to make an identification? Or that these people didn't have families and friends come forward to identify the remains or provide matching DNA?

R6, the remains were deemed unidentifiable but new technology may change that.
[quote]While experts have said that some of the remains have been rendered unidentifiable by the damage they're incurred, the new technology has helped identify samples that could not previously be analyzed.

One of the identified victim's daughter was just on Anderson Cooper. She has not once visited Ground Zero in 20 years and will go for the first time to read her mother's name on Saturday. It seems like she is looking forward to honoring her mother publicly for the first time.

R8: a mixture of both. Some victims were totally incinerated and some families either provided DNA samples that didn’t have enough DNA in them or chose not to provide any at all.
I can understand why as a family member you might support them keeping up this work if you’ve never had 100% conclusive proof/confirmation your loved one was in there. Gets rid of that even 0.00001% of your mind that might think ‘maybe they got a knock to the head and have been living as a homeless hobo in Central Park for 20 years’.

I can totally understand not wanting to be notified either, especially if you've found closure. Its amazing that families have had both options. This victim's daughter just seemed happy to memorialize her mother after so many years.

I just read this..Yes, we all know the story of the falling man. But this article names him and talks about how many others there were that day. Heartbreaking article. Not for everyone.
