Tasteful friends - I think I've found my dream house

Its not cheap at $2.3 million but its worth it. Absolutely amazing interior. Perhaps not for everybody though

Site I found it on is oldhouses.com but for some reason I cant post it from there, pity as it has some real gems

Are site-specific performances of Arsenic and Old Lace being planned?

by Anonymousreply 1September 7, 2021 6:26 PM

Trigger warning:

Your rods and cones will explode.

by Anonymousreply 2September 7, 2021 6:26 PM

My, that's an awful lot of wallpaper. But I can see why you love it, v8. I'd love to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

by Anonymousreply 3September 7, 2021 6:27 PM

Not for everybody, indeed. I am not sure where to even begin. It looks like they were trying to ensure that no square centimeter was left uncovered.

by Anonymousreply 4September 7, 2021 6:28 PM

Very fussy interior & a hideously dated kitchen.

Do,you really like it?

The outside dining area is gorgeous, though.

by Anonymousreply 5September 7, 2021 6:29 PM

R5 I like fussy and ornate - so yes I do really like it.

The kitchen isnt ideal but I'm not a major cook so I could quite happily live with it

by Anonymousreply 6September 7, 2021 6:31 PM

It needs to be remodeled with gasoline and a match.

by Anonymousreply 7September 7, 2021 6:32 PM

linky stinky

by Anonymousreply 8September 7, 2021 6:32 PM

R8 seems to be working for everyone else?

Try this one, seems to have the same pics

Thank for posting a new link. It was worth it! What a storybook house. I couldn't live in it, not during thee day time. Possibly the photos flatten the space too much and it's less chaotic in person. It would be very cosy at night, and not too brightly lit.

by Anonymousreply 10September 7, 2021 8:35 PM

Thanks R10!

Here's another place I love, much more affordably priced, and slightly less busy inside. Dont know what the location is like though. It has a separate garage/ outbuilding as well, and I really rather like the kitchen in this one - its compact but has everything I'd need, and fits the character of the house. Built in 1907 but still has that lovely Victorian aesthetic

No no no no no no…….

by Anonymousreply 12September 8, 2021 2:14 PM

I love it so much that my toes curled as I went through the pictures. Do you need a roommate?

by Anonymousreply 13September 8, 2021 2:19 PM

The icing on that cake is giving me a diabetes sugar rush.

by Anonymousreply 14September 8, 2021 2:22 PM

R13 well if me and my partner ever do move Stateside we'll keep that in mind!

Beautiful old Victorian houses are not as easy to find down under, we still have them but their relative scarcity commands steep prices

by Anonymousreply 15September 8, 2021 2:37 PM

I liked Victorians until about the 150th Victorian I saw posted on Tasteful Friends, and then I realized I didn't like Victorians at all. This one is nice and I like the kitchen (I think I'm the only DLer who likes old kitchens with their original layouts and plain cabinets) but overall it feels claustrophobic. And just in general, I wouldn't want a house on the National Register.

by Anonymousreply 16September 8, 2021 2:39 PM

OMG!! that looks like a victorian doll whore house.

by Anonymousreply 17September 8, 2021 2:41 PM

You could call it your Beach House.

by Anonymousreply 18September 8, 2021 2:57 PM

Gorgeous house.

RE the interior: I love that it's not greige, and I deeply admire the decorator's commitment to the authentic aesthetic of the period. That said, it's just too much for me. A museum rather than a home.

by Anonymousreply 19September 8, 2021 6:54 PM

Escondido? Just-- no.

by Anonymousreply 20September 8, 2021 7:10 PM

The little house in PA is cute but no, it is really LITTLE, like midget person appropriate. The furniture isn't even oversized and it looks enormous in every room.

by Anonymousreply 21September 8, 2021 7:12 PM

[quote] What a storybook house.

Storybook in Escondido? Crime story.

by Anonymousreply 22September 8, 2021 7:23 PM

That's a lot of house and a lot of upkeep. Lots of water needed to keep up that landscaping, especially the grass, and water is expensive in San Diego County. I used to live in San Diego. Property tax is roughly 1% of the sale price, unless your house is historic in some way and qualifies for a "Mills Act" tax credit, which could save you a lot on the property tax bill, but you are supposed to apply those savings towards maintenance of the house, so it doesn't really save you that much in your pocket. Escondido is very conservative and suburban; you'll find yourself driving 30 minutes to San Diego for any "gay culture." But, you could do worse, at least it's not Texas or Alabama.

by Anonymousreply 23September 8, 2021 7:44 PM

A house like this just sold for $600k in my hick town in MA. I know it’s not CA…

by Anonymousreply 24September 8, 2021 7:47 PM

I live right over the hill OP

by Anonymousreply 25September 8, 2021 11:10 PM

R19 I actually like that its a bit museum like, I dont want any contemporary touches, and any mod cons I do have I'd want to be well hidden. I'd take the kitchen back to 1896 as far as possible too

R32 the place in Escondido is pretty big , probably larger than I'd ideally go for by myself. It does qualify for the Mills Act tax credit according to the listing, and the maintenance money is money I'd be wanting to spend anyway, so thats a plus. Why have such a beautiful old property and not keep the maintenance up?

Is Escondido bad for crime? I'm not American so I dont know these things

by Anonymousreply 26September 9, 2021 3:21 PM

No, I don't think of Escondido as a crime ridden area. But I've never lived in Escondido, only San Diego. I've visited a few times; I have a friend who lives there, and it seemed pleasant and suburban to me, though maybe pretty bland. Probably a lot of churchgoers. Some people refer to it as "Escondildo." There is a good taco shop in Escondido, Lourdes Mexican Restaurant, famous for their chicken soup, which is excellent.

by Anonymousreply 27September 9, 2021 3:50 PM

Escondido is hotter than a sauna in summer.

Y'all are big fans of the Sims, huh

I love it and would move in with you. Old houses with separate rooms and little nooks.

I hate open concept homes, so this is perfect.

by Anonymousreply 30February 10, 2022 10:21 PM

I like the Escondido house but as mentioned before, the upkeep! Cripes!

by Anonymousreply 31February 10, 2022 10:31 PM

J'adore!

Houses that appear overly busy (or messy) in photos tend to be just fine in person, IME.

by Anonymousreply 32February 10, 2022 10:40 PM

If only it were more fussy!

by Anonymousreply 33February 10, 2022 10:43 PM

You picked a winner, OP. The interior is especially lovely.

by Anonymousreply 34February 10, 2022 10:49 PM

My stars, it's simply gorgeous!

by Anonymousreply 35February 10, 2022 10:52 PM

Thanks, yes, its a particularly beautiful house, not sure what the location is like, but from what I've seen on here the most stunning locations tend to end up with the ugliest houses on them

by Anonymousreply 36February 10, 2022 10:52 PM

I'd fuck bitches in this bordello.

by Anonymousreply 37February 10, 2022 10:55 PM

you would need to hire a live in housekeeper with all that crap

by Anonymousreply 38February 10, 2022 10:57 PM

These houses are grandma killers

by Anonymousreply 39February 10, 2022 11:03 PM

The interiors are fabulous, but the the kitchen is not extreme enough. Too modern.

by Anonymousreply 40February 11, 2022 4:53 AM

20 years ago Id have plotzed to live there. I still love a Victorian, but my eyes need visual rest now. it is gorgeous, over the top, beautifully done and just too much.

by Anonymousreply 41February 11, 2022 5:00 AM

R40 the kitchen is a reasonable compromise as far as I'm concerned, although I'd be happy to take it further back in time visually, it could do with more ornamentation

by Anonymousreply 42February 11, 2022 10:05 AM

Does it have a good view on class struggle on a bright day?

by Anonymousreply 43February 11, 2022 10:07 AM

These all remind me of my favorite house...

by Anonymousreply 44February 11, 2022 10:23 AM

You Aussies and the faux Victorian esthetic...

by Anonymousreply 45February 11, 2022 10:41 AM

It's beautiful and clearly meticulously maintained. Personally I would rip out all those outlandishly fussy w2w carpets and tone down a lot of the wallpaper, but otherwise it's perfection. As far as the kitchen is concerned it doesn't look outdated to me at all. It has all the mod cons and the old fashioned painted cabinetry seems very appropriate for that house. And it's apparently all kitted out with, what looks like, enough solar panels to possibly run the whole house, so the electricity bills must be tiny or none in that place.

by Anonymousreply 46February 11, 2022 10:42 AM

R44 I like that house too, is there a real estate listing for it? Cant find it on Zillow

by Anonymousreply 47February 11, 2022 10:48 AM

Remove all the wallpaper and the horrid ceiling and its purrrfect !

by Anonymousreply 48February 11, 2022 2:08 PM

If Mary Todd married a banker

by Anonymousreply 49February 11, 2022 2:10 PM

I always confuse Encinitas and Escondido. Still, even for Escondido, this a pretty good deal. Personally I wouldn’t want a Victorian in CA - but it’s nice.

by Anonymousreply 50February 11, 2022 4:46 PM

Escondildo, as it's known locally, is a shithole.

And home of the Lawrence Welk Resort.

Nuf' said.

by Anonymousreply 51February 11, 2022 5:41 PM

Not to burst your bubble, OP, but the washer and dryer don't match.

Pass.

by Anonymousreply 52February 11, 2022 6:08 PM

All that's missing on the outside is a big clock on the roof and a small train to go around it.

by Anonymousreply 53February 11, 2022 6:21 PM

What. A. Dump.

Definitely a no.

by Anonymousreply 54February 11, 2022 6:32 PM

Mr v8fairy you are a hoot. I suggest you and Ms Nicolas look for a Federation home in Sydney. Cremorne has plenty of charmers and much cheaper (just).

by Anonymousreply 55February 11, 2022 6:46 PM

But.... it's in Escondido OP. ES-CON-DI-DO!!!!

by Anonymousreply 56February 11, 2022 6:51 PM

I'm not American, so whats the story on Escondido (or Escondildo as R51 calls it)? What makes it a shithole?

Wikipaedia seems to imply its middling as far as crime etc go, not great, not terrible, and it has a nice lake and some nearby mountains. Hot and dry in the summer, warm and wet in the winter

R55 yes a Federation home in Cremorne would be fantastic.... and fantastically expensive, more so than this

Brisbane is considerably cheaper though, although for really nice ornate homes with the fussy decor I like its pretty slim pickings. This one is closest, price estimated at $3.1 million, it'd be double that in Cremorne
