I’m very no-nonsense and never heard anything but praise until the last year. I’ve had a problem employee I’ve been wanting to fire but the new HR people insist are (absurdly) blocking me. I was told that this employee complained that I was “condescending” to her. I find that ridiculous.
Are you management? What is your management style?

You sound like a cunt to me, OP. I hate to side with HR, but it's true. No human being actually gets "nothing but praise." Everyone faces some criticism or shortcomings, and if you honestly only hear praise, it's because you're tone-deaf to criticism.
I'm in management, and while I stick to the rules, I'm not a slave to them. Different people require different approaches, and you have to be a little flexible if you want them to get the job done consistently without rage-quitting every month. Not every situation can be "no-nonsense," and not every conflict requires formal intervention or coaching or termination. Sometimes, you have to let little things go.

I put too much trust in my team, but they do an excellent job. Sure there are mess ups and problems, but it is only life. Even if I get mad, they would never see me lose my temper or raise my voice to them.
I teach my team that a job is the means to provide for your family, enjoy life, and make an impact.

I was management for over 3 decades before retiring. My management style was to hire people I was confident were qualified for the job. I made sure they were prepared to do the job they were hired for and then I left them alone so they could do just that. Everyone had the ability to make decisions on their own up to certain levels. I was very good at hiring the right people and rarely had to get involved with staff members regarding their job performance, other than conducting performance reviews. I always told them there was nothing wrong with working hard, but I expected them to work smart first, and work hard when hard work was required.

R4 has the secret. Good management starts with making good hires. If you build the right operation with the right people, you won't have to do much "managing" at all, and you can be free to focus on bigger-picture stuff.

Passive aggressive is my mgt style. My employees hate me. I don’t care. They’re all a bunch of bitches!

Firing people made my butthole tingle.

R1, you are completely wrong. I received nothing but praise from the people who mattered. Period. Maybe you only managed upper echelon people, who hardly require being managed. But lower-level people need a firm hand. They are, to put it delicately, of limited intelligence and prone to distraction. You have to stay on top of them every minute.

R8 You sound like the meanest manager ever to wear a Waffle House apron!
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 8, 2021 8:35 PM |
Why would anyone think you’re condescending when you describe them as stupid, distracted babies?

OP fell asleep watching Are You Being Served? and now imagines himself to have power over someone, anyone.

Hi. I’m r6. Do you like my management style?
Bitch!

OP What kind of fryer oil do you use?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 8, 2021 8:53 PM |
Yes, hiring the right people makes a HUGE difference. Self starters will get the job done without much management.

Nothing makes me slow down like being micro-managed. I like things up my ass, but not at work.
