What careers had the quickest journey straight down the shitter?
Captain and Tennille -- Had a number one hit at the start of 1980; were dropped by their record label at the end of the year. Became a novelty nostalgia act alongside performers who had their heydays two decades prior to them almost instantly.
Sandra Dee -- consistently ranked as one of the biggest box office draws in the early to mid '60s then let go from her contract with Universal and became an unemployable anachronism who would be lucky to get a part on The Rockford Files. She was barely older than Stockard Channing when she was being mocked in Grease.
Janet Jackson -- went from being considered a peer of Madonna's at the start of millenium with a record breaking recording contract to being barely a footnote in music by the middle of the decade, at a time when Madonna, Mariah, and her old backup dancer JLo were still having hits. Even Whitney's disastrous final tour out-grossed her Rock Witchu tour by 300%, to say nothing of the Iowa incident. She nows seems to have all the cultural cache of Paula Abdul.
Who else are we missing? Add you own below.

Most of these people had several years at the top before their careers declined. The best example is probably Vaughn Meader, who came out of nowhere to have one of the biggest records of 1962-63, win Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, tour the nation, and appear all over TV impersonating JFK, only to see his career completely disappear in Dealey Plaza the afternoon of November 22, 1963.
Legend has it that Lenny Bruce went onstage that night at a comedy club and stood silently for several minutes, before finally saying, "Boy, is Vaughn Meader fucked."

Lady Gaga
She was poised to be the biggest popstar of all time and even outdo Madonna, but by the time ARTPOP came out people were already over her weird costumes and gimmicks. She made a jazz album with Tony Bennett and a country sounding album to prove to the world that she really had talent and could sing, but they didn't care much. Without the eccentric behavior and costumes she isn't really all that interesting. Now she cannot get a hit song without help whether it's from Bradley Cooper or Ariana Grande.

Janet had a good career up until the Superbowl. After that it was like the whole world collectively said "Okay, let's not talk about her again, let's not listen to her music anymore, let's forget all about her." All of that over a naked breast for 2 seconds which was accidental no less. And nowadays celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian choose to show their tits and asses on an almost daily basis and get praised for "female empowerment." It is so ridiculous and unfair. The world did Janet so wrong.

Cybill Shepherd is a modest talent who has successfully reinvented herself several times: from a star fashion model to Peter Bogdonovich's muse/leading lady in the early 70s, to the hit TV show MOONLIGHTING in the 80s, and with her own successful sitcom in the 90s. She's appeared in some interesting projects for TV (playing Martha Stewart, for example) and film outside of that.
I'm not a big fan, but nothing about her long, uneven career fits OP's description.

Speaking of Tambor, I was one of the loyal fans who stuck with (and really enjoyed) TRANSPARENT.
But with the exception of Judith Light (who will go on working, for Ryan Murphy and for others), I think everyone associated with that show is (unfailrly) associated with Tambor's sexual abuse and especially with the problematic trans-representation politics. What began as one of the most progressive shows on TV felt like anything but by the time it ended. It's not fondly regarded (if it's remembered at all), which is a shame.
Tambor sounds like a nightmare of hostility and abuse, but he was really good on TRANSPARENT. And Joey (ne Jill) Soloway makes interesting TV but is also a giant mess.

Trevor Bauer, starting pitcher for the Dodgers and highest-paid player in MLB, may be out for some very rough but consensual sexual encounters. He punched her in the face and vagina with his fist and put her in the hospital, then she came back for more. He’s been on "administrative leave" for about eight weeks pending on the DA’s decision whether or not to prosecute him. But the Dodgers may not want him back in either case because the whole affair is so appallingly shocking. Still, they forgave pitcher Julio Urias last year when he was involved in (non-consensual) spousal abuse. So we’ll see, I guess.

But she keeps working - recorded a few children's albums, did TV work, appeared in a GEICO commercial campaign this year singing her hit “Stay” setup as an audition. She's doing OK.
According to People: "Though Lisa Loeb rose to fame as a singer, she's probably just as well known for her eyeglasses." in November 2010, Loeb launched the Lisa Loeb Eyewear Collection. Each type of frame is named after one of her song titles, and while most models are for women, there are models for young girls and men.
Loeb also sells a brand of coffee called her "Wake Up! Brew", a reference to her "Everybody Wake Up" song from her Camp Lisa album. The brand is organic and fair trade, with all profits going to Camp Lisa, and it is only available through the Coffee Fool website.
Loeb dated Dweezil Zappa from 1998 to 2004. She married Roey Hershkovitz in 2009; they met in 2006 during a business meeting for a food TV show. The couple have two children, Lyla Rose and Emet Kuli. Her cousin is New York City-based drag queen Alexis Michelle who was a competitor on the ninth season of reality television series RuPaul's Drag Race.

Paolo Montalban OWNS this thread. Started at the top in 1997, then had his own series for maybe 2 years...then...NOTHING.
Nothing except musical theater that is, the stage equivalent of soaps.
Still looks exactly the same though...24 years later.

Huey Lewis & the News.
Huey's sizemeat is legendary: : The famous groupie Connie Hamzy said on Howard Stern in 2010 that Huey had such a huge cock she could barely fit it in her mouth .
That woman's had a lot of famous dick. . Grand Funk Railroad even mentioned her in their song "We're An American Band" ...sweet, sweet Connie doing her act, she had the whole show and that's a natural fact .

I saw an interview with Florence Henderson, she said she did extremely well post BB as a commercial spokeswoman because she already had America’s trust as a famous TV mom. She was one of the few who got recurring contracts for the same product, usually an ad campaign would move on to another spokesperson or angle. She did her Carol schtick for Wesson Oil forever, then Polydent. She also hosted a cooking show on cable.

Corey Hart seemed destined for bigger things. Could really sing. Was gorgeous. Had some great songs. You'd think he'd have tried films or Broadway like Andy Gibb and other people from the era.

Karen Mossberg in The Big Cube (1969) The credits say 'Introducing' Karin Moss and it's her final film credit. Mossberg plays Lana Turner's step daughter and she and her sleazy boyfriend (George Chakiris) spike Lana's sedatives with LSD! A camp classic. Swedish born Mossberg's accent is reminiscent of Zsa Zsa Gabor.

The careers of teen idols tend to go downhill quickly. David Cassidy was a huge star for a brief time due to the tv series "The Partridge Family." He was THE teen idol for a while, the darling of hoards of screaming teenage girls. But her wanted to taken seriously as a rock star, so he participated in an article about him in Rolling Stone magazine and posed for a photo that revealed to his shocked fan base that he had pubic hair. Big mistake! The article and photo damaged his image, and after leaving the Partridge Family his career went straight down the toilet and never really recovered.
Sometimes I listen to a 70s oldies station and hear songs by the teen idols of the era. They're very funny. Most of them (Donny Osmond, Tony DeFranco) sound like girls. David Cassidy acutally had a decent voice but becoming a teen idol really doomed him.

Jamie Walters. He had a #1 single, from his TV show, The Heights, then a platinum album and a gold album. And starred on 90210. His character, Ray Pruitt, was abusive to Donna Martin (Tori Spelling). The story arc of his character was that Ray was supposed to be redeemed, in future episodes, but instead Walters was dropped and his image was damaged.

Desi Arnaz, Jr. Was a heart throb due to being on his mom's show, Here's Lucy (and being in a teen band). Was in the popular TV movie, Mr. and Mrs. Bo Jo Jones, then had a movie career with Red Sky At Morning, Billy Two Hats, and some movie about Marco Polo. Was also in A Wedding. Continued to work, but basically the big career never happened.

Chris Brown. He had songs that hit #1 or at least the top 10 on the billboards. Couldn’t get away from his music. He showed up Britney Spears the night of her tragic VMA performance and despite his terrible voice, was the next great black hole in pop music.
Then he decided to attack Rihanna. Turning her into America’s sweetheart and destroying his career’s momentum. He maintains a following of primarily black females, but nothing can replace the highlights he was flying and could have reached if he didn’t attack Rihanna.

Jamie Walters! I loved “Hold On”, he wasn’t a great vocalist but he was passionate and he played guitar and looked cute in baggy plaid shirts. I saw him on VH-1 years ago and he was a hunky fireman with a family in Flyoverville.

Collectively, The Kids In The Hall never made it big, after their film Brain Candy went down the shitter. They're reuniting, but they kind of remain non-big. Nor did any of them really make it big individually. I really liked them, though.
Dr Ruth kind of disappeared suddenly after being everywhere (and is still alive). Pete Wentz was kind of big for five minutes (Fall Out Boy still is, but he isn't), and his ex-wife, Ashlee Simpson, also big for five minutes then...boom.

Linda Fiorentino. Was the bright new Hollywood thing, nominated for every award imaginable for her role in "The Last Seduction". A couple of years later she was literally NOWHERE. And it wasn't even a gradual slide into oblivion.

What happened to Linda Fiorentino? She worked steadily for years until The Last Seduction. Then she was in that flop Jade, but bounced back sort of in Men in Black and Dogma. It seems odd she wasn't able to get steady work again.

[quote]Madonna had her last number one in 2000. Other than the Timberlake song she guested on (which is long forgotten) she hasn't fared much better than Janet.
R61 That was only in the U.S. Madonna continued to have #1 hits around the world into the 2010s. For example, "Die Another Day" (2002), "American Life" (2003), "Me Against the Music" (2003), "Hung UP" (2005), "Sorry" (2006), "4 Minutes" (2008)

R143 Nia had already tarnished the original movie less than a year after its premiere, when she attempted to adapt it into a multicamera sitcom with a laugh track retitled MY BIG FAT GREEK LIFE. It was godawful! And it had no John Corbett. It only lasted a handful of episodes. As R143 stated, Nia was Oscar-nominated for writing the screenplay. I wonder if the show sank her chances. She could have very well pulled a Diablo Cody a la JUNO and won -- the film had been a smash hit -- but the TV show premiered in early 2003 in the midst of the voting period.

If you are referring to "4 Minutes," that is a Madonna song, featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. They did co-write and produced it, though.
