More to the point, in order to pull off a recall, the GOP needed low turn-out from Democrats, they're not getting it. Around 40 percent of all registered Democrats have already voted--more than the GOP and independents combined. Democrats have a huge registration edge over the GOP, which hasn't won a statewide election in more than 10 years.

But, yes, if Newsom loses, the turn-over is short and, yes, the governor would appoint Feinstein's successor if she died. However, Feinstein, unlike RBG, doesn't have terminal cancer and the winner of the recall election would be up for a vote a year from November.

Which is one of the reasons the recall is such fucking, expensive nonsense--Newsom's up for re-election in a year anyway. The ONLY reason the GOP is doing this recall crap is because they're incapable of fielding a candidate who can win an actual majority of votes. R112, do you have a link to the final numbers? I just realized that the NYT numbers haven't been updated since yesterday (they only show the count at 74% of total votes cast), and for some reason everything else that my search brings up is also from yesterday at the latest.

It'll take a while to count all the votes for a "final" tally -- and it's probably not a priority since it was clear by 8PM (PST) what the outcome was.
