Today I offer up Marilyn McCoo's 1983 album "Solid Gold" on RCA Records. This was obviously a tie-in project to compliment her role on the popular syndicated TV show SOLID GOLD. Here Marilyn sings a fleshed-out version of the TV show's theme song and sings cover versions of popular songs of the day including; "Every Breath You Take", "I'll Tumble 4 Ya", "Let's Dance/The Safety Dance" and probably the best of the bunch "Always On My Mind". She is a great singer and is convincing as she puts her stamp on these tracks.
Holy SHIT.

She had great pipes and that's an OK rendition, but I think she showcases her voice far better here:

She did have powerful pipes but a very untrained voice. If she'd had a good vocal coach, those would have sounded much better.

Marilyn McCoo is beautiful with a lovely voice that was not distinctive enough to have sustained a solo career. She parlayed her talents into showcases that worked for her -- TV Host and variety show singer.

She and Billy have appeared on The 700 Club…more than once too.

McCoo was the daughter of two prominent southern California medical doctors. She was expected by her parents to continue the professional tradition by becoming a doctor, herself, and caught he'll when she went into show business....

One of my college roommates (in the '70s) was the son of a prominent African-American physician in LA. I remember him saying that his parents went to the McCoo-Davis nuptials.

Thank you, R8. I do come usually when requested by my fans. Although you must be the hovering 'kill all white fags" creature in that nursing home who takes ownership of all African American or black-adjacent threads who still can't figure out what "troll" means here, because you're mentally deficient.
Everyone knows I love Marilyn and think she has a great voice wasted on pablum, over-the-line whitish pop and too-smooth elevator music.
And I should hope that I forgave her a long time ago for her fucking back-stabbing attempt to renew her career when I TOLD her I was nee-gotiating.
Love you, my little McCooCoo.

She sang lead on the 5th Dimension’s LOVE HANGOVER.

Thank you, Miss Warwick, for your words of wisdom and import.

So beautiful, and a really nice voice. When I first discovered her I wondered why she didn't have more success in the vein of a Diana Ross or even a Diahann Carroll. Not saying she should have been on that level, but at least closer to it than she got (I think she's more forgotten than she should be).
While I like those 5th Dimension songs, for someone who has been in the industry so long, her catalogue is just TOO inoffensive and milquetoast, not just in terms of subject matter but musically as well. And not even in a memorable way like, say, Carpenters or Olivia Newton John. Then again, I know she's a born again Christian (and I believe a republican?), so maybe her material over the years being so middle-of-the-road suits her conservative values.

I fucking LIVED for Solid Gold when I was a kid. It was around when I was starting to get into music and buy my own records. I remember watching one week when Blondie was on. My mom walked into the room, took one look at Debbie Harry and said, “She’s high as a kite!!!” I loved Dionne, but Marilyn was pretty good, too.
WHET lead dancer Darcelle???

At least get her name right, R18.
And learn to use Google.

Darcel’s body was sick. Stunning to look at. And she is freaking seventy years old and looks amazing.

Two words and a suffix -- Billy Davis, Jr. She only wanted to be partnered with him as a recording artist. The "Solid Gold" LP was intended to help cement her as the show host. Otherwise she had no interest in being a solo recording artist. It's just as well because she couldn't have competed in an arena that already had Dionne and Ross -- and later Whitney. Occasionally, Clive Davis would mention McCoo to Whitney as a model for her stage presentation, and of course, Whitney scoffed because she never saw herself as a vanilla MOR pop singer (even though some of her audience did). Still, McCoo originally recorded two of Whitney's big hits -- "Saving All My Love For You" and "I Believe In You and Me."
McCoo and Davis have been married for more than 50 years because of their devotion. They still perform and record today. Apparently they did something right. They are very nice people who are lovely to their gay fans.

Her voice is very pretty. I just found out she originally recorded "Saving All My Love For You." It's crazy how many of Whitney's hits were actual cover songs (I get this an old tradition but cover versions often eclipse the original and I wonder how the original singers if alive feel about it). Anyway, just like with Dolly's original "I Will Always Love You", I definitely prefer Marilyn's elegant and classy rendition to Whitney's more soulful rendition. Marilyn is more effortlessly sexy and intimate, Whitney is trying too hard with it.

Marilyn, who is a good friend of mine most of the time, has a perfectly serviceable voice. Smooth, controlled.
Perfect for lawn-service commercials or one of those re-cordings that tell you you're going to be on hold for an hour before you're disconnected.
She's lucky to have had such good opportunities with "Fifth Dimension," which was alllllll about selling candy corn and balloons. Wasn't it?
Maybe if she hadn't spent so many years deadening the pain with Jesus and those pills she'd have broken through.
