How Does DL Feel About Michael McDonald?

He’s made some of the best songs I’ve ever heard, but it seems like a lot of people don’t care for him.

I prefer Michael McDonald

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 1September 5, 2021 5:52 PM

He is a fundie.

by Anonymousreply 2September 5, 2021 5:54 PM

His voice is like a fork being dragged across a plate.

by Anonymousreply 3September 5, 2021 5:55 PM

Instantly recognizable voice. Weird but memorable songs.

by Anonymousreply 4September 5, 2021 6:06 PM

He ruined the Doobie Brothers.

by Anonymousreply 5September 5, 2021 6:09 PM

He kept The Doobie Brothers relevant.

by Anonymousreply 6September 5, 2021 6:10 PM

No he’s not R2.

by Anonymousreply 7September 5, 2021 6:12 PM

His songs were over played. You couldn't get away from them. For that reason I do still do not want to hear any of his music.

by Anonymousreply 8September 5, 2021 6:13 PM

Hardly R2.

by Anonymousreply 9September 5, 2021 6:18 PM

When were his songs overplayed, R8? In the 70s and 80s?

by Anonymousreply 10September 5, 2021 6:22 PM

any excuse to post this

by Anonymousreply 11September 5, 2021 6:22 PM

R10, when they were popular, Rose, and long afterward. He was the kind of a certain middle of the road kind of song. That's why people like R8 and myself would be happy to never hear him again.

by Anonymousreply 12September 5, 2021 6:24 PM

So you hate him for his success, R12? What the hell kind of music do you like, exactly? No artists who were popular on the radio at some point in time?

by Anonymousreply 13September 5, 2021 6:27 PM

Love his back up vocals with Steely Dan.

And this break up song.

by Anonymousreply 15September 5, 2021 6:28 PM

Love Him!

by Anonymousreply 16September 5, 2021 6:30 PM

R13: It isn't popularity. It's being overplayed which often isn't entirely a reflection of popularity. And certainly not a measure of quality.

by Anonymousreply 17September 5, 2021 6:30 PM

I secretly love him and his voice and have a bunch of his old songs and songs where he sang backup on iTunes. I only play them when no one is around. And, I actually watched the two part episode of “What’s Happening” just because he (and those other guys in his band) were on it. I am a dork.

by Anonymousreply 18September 5, 2021 6:32 PM

I say the same thing about the Beatles who not only were overplayed at the height of their popularity but continued to be overplayed into the 90's. I don't care if I ever hear them again.

by Anonymousreply 19September 5, 2021 6:33 PM

R11 Came here to do the same!

by Anonymousreply 20September 5, 2021 6:50 PM

He’s obviously very talented, and has a distinctive sound which to me is always a most impressive thing. I do prefer the early Doobie brothers though.

by Anonymousreply 21September 5, 2021 6:55 PM

Mediocre Soft Rock isn't my thing.

by Anonymousreply 22September 5, 2021 6:56 PM

Singer Vesta Williams once said Anita Baker sounded like Michael McDonald at a slower speed.

by Anonymousreply 23September 5, 2021 6:57 PM

I love his work. Thanks upthread for I Can Let Go Now.

by Anonymousreply 24September 5, 2021 7:02 PM

I love Michael McDonald. It's rather astonishing how many songs he has been part of, not just with the Doobie Brothers or solo, but duets with Patti, James Ingram, Nicolette Larson, Christopher Cross (some of these he is more of a back-up singer but his voice is so distinct, it feels like a duet).

by Anonymousreply 25September 5, 2021 7:05 PM

Generally not his biggest fan though I do think he is talented. However, “What a Fool Believes” is a work of genius for its aching lyrics of heartbreak, delusion, and yearning set against banal yacht rock stylings. The music serves to heighten the desperation and sadness of the lyrics. We’ve all been that guy in the song at one time or another (unless you don’t have a pulse.)

by Anonymousreply 26September 5, 2021 7:15 PM

SWEET FREEDOM is a classic. Love that huge anthem like chorus

by Anonymousreply 32September 5, 2021 8:28 PM

He has covid now as of last week.

by Anonymousreply 33September 5, 2021 8:31 PM

[quote]I would rather watch "Beautician and the Beast". I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothing against him, but if I hear "Yah Mo B There" one more time, I'm going to "Yah Mo" burn this place to the ground.

by Anonymousreply 35September 5, 2021 8:41 PM

Both things can be true, R9. He is a reborn Christian. How Faith Helped Michael McDonald Let Go of the Past Singer Michael McDonald had made it big—but something was missing.

I wonder how many closeted Michael McDonald fans there are in the world.

by Anonymousreply 38September 6, 2021 12:18 AM

Did you even read that r36? Nothing about being a born again Christian. He wrote about becoming more spiritual after he gave up drugs and during his wife’s battle with cancer. Hardly “being a fundie”

by Anonymousreply 39September 6, 2021 12:30 AM

He and his wife have been friends of ours for years. They’re kind, thoughtful people.

r6, he led them straight into MOR, yacht rock hell. They were a rock band before that. Just like Steve Perry did to Journey. And what Lou Gramm did to Foreigner.

by Anonymousreply 53September 6, 2021 1:09 AM

well he did sing the duet with patti labelle that i love, which is the ONLY SONG of hers I can handle listening to, that being "on my own"...

I hate what he did to the Doobie Brothers. They were great during their "China Grove" and "Long Train Runnin" days, and their cover of "Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me)" is my favorite cover song ever. Then McDonald, with his clunky marble-mouth bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 57September 6, 2021 1:26 AM

r57 McDonald was the best thing that ever happened to the Doobie Brothers. He gave them soul.

by Anonymousreply 58September 6, 2021 1:29 AM

Hot as fuck in his heyday. Would have loved to see some shirtless pics.

by Anonymousreply 59September 6, 2021 1:34 AM

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60September 6, 2021 1:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 61September 6, 2021 1:40 AM

He would've looked SO much better clean-shaven and with short hair. The long hair and beard really hid his beauty. That shaggy, bearded 70s look did men no favors.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62September 6, 2021 2:16 AM

Disagree that he would have looked better clean-shaven and with short hair.

by Anonymousreply 63September 6, 2021 3:44 AM

Saw him in a small concert hall. Free tickets, low expectations. I was blown away by his voice. His wife was on stage, singing background. He was good / funny with the crowd, chatting between songs.

He was super handsome in his heyday.

I liked the Doobie Brothers before and after him. Agree it was a totally different sound. Reminds me of how much Fleetwood Mac changed with Lindsay Buckingham & Stevie Nicks got added to the group.

by Anonymousreply 64September 6, 2021 3:48 AM

r63 he looked like a Sasquatch. His features were totally obscured. Long hair and beards don't do anything for men they look better with short hair and clean-shaven.

by Anonymousreply 65September 6, 2021 3:49 AM

Handsome as hell back in the day. I loved a lot of his music, solo and with the Doobies. What a Fool Believes captures that upbeat yet melancholy sound that hits me in the feels with so many 70s songs.

I do agree he was overplayed/overexposed.

by Anonymousreply 66September 6, 2021 3:53 AM

Did you read it, R39? Do you know what Guideposts is? He had a reborn Christian experience. He changed his religious identity from Catholicism to Protestant fundamentalism. I stand by original statement.

Guideposts is a spiritual non-profit organization that encourages wellness through inspirational content creation. Founded in 1945 by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, Raymond Thornburg, and Peale's wife, Ruth Stafford Peale[1] with just one inaugural magazine, Guideposts has since grown to publish annual devotionals, books about faith, Christian fiction novels, five spiritual magazines, prayer content, as well as a content-rich website for daily inspiration.[2] Guideposts has outreach programs to encourage wellness and help lifts the spirits of those in need – including military personnel, military families, support groups, hospitalized children, etc

Guideposts is nonsectarian and welcomes Protestant, Catholic, Jewish writers, and more. A separate youth edition, published for several years, has been discontinued.

by Anonymousreply 69September 6, 2021 2:26 PM

Lol@R69. All of whom are Protestants from the Reformed tradition. Reformed=Fundamentalist. Thanks for making my point!

by Anonymousreply 70September 6, 2021 3:15 PM

Hmm, r60 that boy was mighty fahne! I would have run bare foot through that chest. Mmm hmm.

by Anonymousreply 71September 6, 2021 3:27 PM

What the fuck is your point R70? He’s not a fundie and you are citing a 16 year old article where he says nothing about being a born again Christian or a fundie. Go put on your Jan crouch wig and finger your cavernous hole.

by Anonymousreply 72September 6, 2021 5:21 PM

When a narcissist is proven wrong they resort to name calling. Quelle surprise.

by Anonymousreply 73September 6, 2021 5:37 PM

The only one proven wrong was you clitdick. Quit derailing this thread psycho.

by Anonymousreply 74September 6, 2021 8:20 PM

R70, Guideposts is not for fundamentalists. It was used by my American synod Lutheran church, which is the opposite of Christian fundamentalism.

by Anonymousreply 75September 6, 2021 9:32 PM

You’re missing the point, R75. No one said that. It was started by Protestants, for Protestants. Not all Protestants are fundamentalists. And Lutheranism is not the opposite of fundamentalism just because you say so.

by Anonymousreply 76September 6, 2021 11:36 PM

He was part of so many of the best sketches in MadTV and one of their most iconic actors with the most iconic characters.

by Anonymousreply 82September 11, 2021 1:04 AM

He's total Frau catnip. A few years ago I saw a concert he was part of with Donald Fagen, Boz Scaggs and Mr. McDonald. While waiting for my friend to join me I somehow got into a conversation with the late 50ish woman with frosted hair sitting a seat or so over. I was just making idle chit chat with her about the artists and their music and she cut me off and let me know in no uncertain terms that she was only there for Michael, she'd been deeply in love with him for 40 years and she didn't give a flying fuck about anyone else. She was actually huffy to me!

by Anonymousreply 83September 11, 2021 1:24 AM
