Going to listen to her belt out the chorus of Miss You Bow Wow

Per Wikipedia:
On 26 August 2020, Harding stated that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer that had advanced to "other parts" of her body.[42] In March 2021, she said that the disease was terminal and that she "won't see another Christmas"

Excerpts of Sarah's autobiography were published earlier this year and she talked about how surgeons had been able to remove skin from her back from around her tattoo to repair the damage caused by the mastectomy. She said she couldn't look at herself in the mirror after the operation.
On the same day another newspaper interviewed Eddie Izzard and they spoke of "boob envy" and how they loved their boobs.
She was open and honest about her drug and alcohol dependency and was always so optimistic despite all the setbacks.
Her appearance on Coronation Street remains a classic.

Sarah helped make the group what it was.

The public voted for the members of the group.
Cheryl, Nadine, Kimberley and Nicola were voted on as members and it came down to Sarah or Javine.

It was pretty brutal to put them through this, but then reality tv was brutal in the early 2000s.
Javine had a decent career. A couple of singles and an affair with Alesha Dixon's husband.

R21 I know. But I remember people saying Cheryl was only voted in because everyone found her beautiful. But she couldn’t actually sing.

So sad. I travelled to London in 2013 to see the Girls Aloud "Ten" reunion show. Sarah seemed unsure of herself but I admired her because you could see her trying so hard. It was a great show.

She/they sound like every other "girl singing pop" group/so. The same electronic music, the same limited vocal range and vapid lyrics. Sad for her (obviously), but let's recognize the obvious.

You don't know what you're talking about r26. Girls Aloud and Xenomania came up with some brilliant songs like Biology, Call the Shots, Sexy No No No, and Untouchable.
They were NOT typical girl group songs.

Currently listening to Wake Me Up and trying to work out which other girl group it sounds like with its vapid lyrics.
🎵 Was it just the margaritas or are you lookin' at me? Without a fuss you're getting us ever so slightly messed up 🎵
🎵 Dance if you want till the dirty is done 'cause we're stars at the dead of the night but if you're looking for romance, there's a chance reflecting the sun then I'm gonna put up a fight. They could be dreadful in live performances but the live arrangement of "The Promise" is the best, and that was mainly down to Sarah (and Nadine).

Did she have the breast cancer gene?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 5, 2021 8:23 PM |
I think she did say it was her choice to put off going to the doctor due to covid. But the media and NHS were pushing the whole hysteria around people staying home and only going to the doctor if they had serious health issues. Obviously with a lot of serious health issues you need to go to the doctor to learn that’s what they are though.

I haven't read her book, but if you compare her performances during the Out of Control Tour from 2009 to the Ten Tour from 2013, the difference is quite obvious. She is confident and assured during OOC but unsure and unsteady during Ten. Something happened within those four years, maybe drug use or ramping up of mental health issues. It also didn't help that the girls were having issues backstage. During their break from 2009 to 2012, Cheryl, Kimberly and Nicola (branded "Chimola" by fans) became close while Nadine did her thing and Sarah did hers. When they regrouped for Ten in 2012, there seemed to be two cliques, Chimola and Sarah and Nadine. I saw three performances on the tour and Sarah didn't look happy.
Here's a clip of that ginger cunt Nicola running to Cheryl and running past poor Nadine and Sarah at 2:56.

I never even heard of this group until I heard of it here. How do they decide where to market musical groups? If they were so big over there why shouldn't they make it in America? Many many others have in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | September 6, 2021 12:55 AM |
British music is often a grab bag of styles. American Radio is so rigid, they'd never accept the Frankenstein pop of Girls Aloud.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | September 6, 2021 1:00 AM |
It's like Kylie Minogue. Her brand of pop is more popular in the UK and Australia, but much more difficult to break in America (although Kylie has had the occasional hit). It's probably too much money and too much travel to try to court American fans.
It's the same with Little Mix. They're huge in the UK but have not had a genuine American hit.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | September 6, 2021 1:04 AM |
Robbie Williams I remember couldn't crack the US because it wasn't something that appealed to Americans.

British pop often has a type of humor that is not found in American pop. Rappers can joke, pop singers rarely do.

The dynamics of the band were a strange one. Cheryl, Kimberley and Nicola became friends very quickly, they were close to Sarah, but she became increasingly unreliable from her drinking and drug use, turning up late, turning up drunk, or not turning up at all.
Nadine - the group's Lea Michele - spent most of her non band time in LA and saw the group as a job, distancing herself from the other girls. Nadine had been promised by Louis Walsh that she would be the breakout star and a solo career would take off when the group inevitably crashed and burned. But Louis Walsh was sacked by the girls and replaced by Bananarama's manager Hilary Shaw and the group went from strength to strength with Xenomania.
From what I remember there were lots of stories about Sarah potentially leaving the group in 2005/2006ish, after the Chemistry album. Chemistry is a great album but is so Nadine heavy I can understand why other members would have raised issues. Tangled Up changed direction and vocals were shared out far more. Sarah features far more prominently and the album benefits massively from it.

So glad I could do their PR when Emma was involved!
by Anonymous | reply 65 | September 6, 2021 8:21 AM |
Although I live in Canada, r64 I never got to experience the Girls Aloud phenomenon in the same way as the UK but I enjoyed their music from afar. I agree, Chemistry is way too Nadine-heavy. I love Nadine but I do like that the vocals were more evenly distributed on the later albums. I think Sarah had a beautiful tone, and she really stood out on The Loving Kind (one of my faves), Miss You Bow Wow, and The Promise (the "Walking Primrose" line).
Sarah did seem very troubled on The Ten Tour. Say what you will about Cheryl and Nadine, they were fantastic on the Ten Tour, they worked that stage.
I love Nadine but, yes, she seemed to think she was going to be a big solo star. However, I think she's been humbled in the last decade and she seemed very appreciative of the fans on The Ten Tour.

Nadine's passive aggressive style in interviews is almost endearing. She's always asked about the other girls in interviews, in particular Cheryl, but it's always the case that they haven't been in touch with her, not the other way around. I can't remember which event it was when Nadine couldn't attend because she lost her passport but the other 4 had a great time without her.
Nadine is the Kim Cattrall of Girls Aloud - anything she ever does again will always come back to the question "so when did you last speak to Cheryl/SJP".
This is a nice write up of Sarah.

Is Nadine a popular name in the UK? Is it Nay-deen or nuh-DEEN?

Nadine is Irish. It's Nuh-deen, no weight on either syllable. It's not a common name, no.

by Anonymous | reply 76 | September 6, 2021 3:02 PM |
I watched the video for Sound of the Underground linked @ R17 - first time I've seen it in years. What struck me was that Nadine is the only one who seems like an actual pop star. She's a natural in front of the camera. Nicola seems like she's wandered in off the street and isn't sure what she's doing there. The other three look like girls playing at being pop stars.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | September 8, 2021 4:26 PM |
It's what she deserves for what she did to our beloved Nancy Kerrigan.
Never forget 1994!!!
by Anonymous | reply 78 | September 8, 2021 4:39 PM |
Nadine didn't seem like a natural next to Cheryl, who always knew how to flirt with the camera. I think Nadine was only 17. She was a little graceless in terms of movement, though not as bad as Sarah.
It's interesting how in their Popstars The Rivals performances it's already clear who the public likes most. The loudest cheers were given to Cheryl, Kimberley and Sarah as they took to the stage in their individual performances. Nadine and Nicola were much better singers but they were less confident physically. I think it's very telling that Nadine dropped a lot weight even though she was never fat. The public identified with those they saw as prettier, sexier etc.

I couldn’t stand Nadine or Cheryl. They each came over to LA (separately) like typical Brits thinking they were going to become big stars and they both flopped, especially Cheryl with The X-Factor in America where nobody could understand her mumble mouth.

Nadine bought a bar for her family. Funnily enough, it was Brian Higgins who brought her out to LA in the first place.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | September 8, 2021 11:02 PM |
Here's the moment Sarah became the last girl to make the band. Not sure anyone could predicted what a phenomenon these girls would become. The winners of the previous series of Popstars, Hear'Say, had already crashed and burned by this point. Girls Aloud were extremely lucky to be paired with a songwriting team as strong as Xenomania.
Kind of funny to hear Davina talk about how close Kimberley and Nadine were at that point, given how much their relationship later soured.

Cheryl and Nadine really competed for star power on the Ten Tour. They both worked that stage. Kimberly was boring, Nicola yodelled and Sarah, bless her, struggled but tried very hard.

Had Girls Aloud songs on random play this afternoon and Count The Days came on. What a lovely song, much better than their cover of See The Day.
Nicola's "I'll be waiting" moments make the song but Sarah's middle 8 is so lovely and heartfelt.
🎵 When I think my world could fall apart and I'm damn near broken in my heart and my world is falling down, in my mind I will keep you safe from harm 'til you're lying in my arms. Until then I'll wait somehow. 🎵

by Anonymous | reply 91 | September 9, 2021 6:02 PM |
See The Day isn't bad, it's just feels like a Westlife copy and paste job. There was a version I got from one of the file sharing websites that was Nadine solo for the entire song. Poor Kimberley didn't even get a word on the single version.
Whole Lotta History is great, Count The Days is lovely, Hear Me Out (Sarah's song) is very good,
by Anonymous | reply 92 | September 9, 2021 6:08 PM |
Kimberly didn't originally get a line on "Sound of the Underground." That version was even played on the radio before someone realized or kicked up a fuss.

I actually liked her first single, Fight For This Love, but she really is talentless vocally and everything else she’s done has been horrific. It says a lot about the general music buying British public that at one point I think she had the most #1 singles for a British female singer. Till Jess Glynn. Which says even more.

by Anonymous | reply 108 | September 10, 2021 4:26 AM |
R108: they pretty much only had any success in the UK and Ireland as that’s where the TV show they were put together on aired. They had something like 20 Top 10 singles in a row over a decade in the UK so lazy journalists/their record company PR people sometimes call them ‘the most successful British girl group ever’. Even just in the UK the Spice Girls would have sold 10x at least more singles and albums in their 4 years of releasing music though.
