It used to be acceptable only for men who had been in he service and then just the one tattoo reflecting that service.

The rise of tattoo sleeves and getting all tatted up everywhere is relatively recent and deeply unattractive. Still, it alerts us to the stupid, trashy, tasteless people we should not hire or fuck so there's that.

Religion is like a tattoo: it looks ridiculous and pitiful to those without one.

The only folks who think your tattoo is really cool are those with similar ones. If you later change your mind about having the tattoo, you feel _really_ stupid. Those with brand-new tattoos just love showing it off to their friends, not recognizing that most of their friends are going to think they're silly (unless their friends already have tattoos).

by Anonymousreply 7September 2, 2021 11:30 PM

It is just another example of people doing stupid stuff because the crowd is doing it, if the crowd was against tattoos 95% of these people wouldn't be getting even one.

I have yet to see a single person that looked better with tattoos than without them.

I have no idea why sensible gay men would want to stain their body.

I have 1 tattoo, it’s my cancer sign on my wrist and I’m going to get Cleopatra’s handwriting on my other wrist.

I think heavy tattooing is a Millennial thing and I think Gen Z is getting less from what I’ve seen. I’ve also noticed tattoo removal becoming more and more prominent.

I think the problem is tattoos were for a special scene. It’s inspired by male gang culture and it was for black and Latino men and your white skinheads and metal heads / punks. And now it’s become so mainstream that it’s bound to fall out of trend and people are starting to regret them.

The problem with us millennials is that we’re forever teenagers. We don’t want to grow up. Maybe I’m wrong and older people here can speak on it but millennials are still as materialism and scene-y as they were when they were teenagers. No one wants to have kids anymore because they want to stay a kid. That’s where the tattoos come in. Still rebelling.

I mean I’m not a prude, I like guys with tattoos but I find some of it to be pretentious and scene-y.

Do you have cancer? It is warning for the medics who find you collapsed on the floor?

by Anonymousreply 12September 3, 2021 6:30 AM

It's more than stupid. It's corroborating evidence of mental illness. A tiny tattoo in an inconspicuous place is nothing and is usually just the result of peer pressure. Multiple tattoos, a form of self-mutilation, goes hand-in-hand with other signs that a person is not well.

Watch for it angst and wailing, it's coming.

by Anonymousreply 27September 3, 2021 2:15 PM

The white girl at R24 is fucking ruined. She ruined herself. She's a fucking psycho freak, and there's no way she's at all happy with her life. Her unhappiness is quite apparent from her "I'm so artistic and ethereal" (another term for it?) behavior. She makes it her "mission" as an "activist" because, subconsciously, she wants to spread her misery around.

Freak.

by Anonymousreply 28September 3, 2021 2:19 PM

I think that she looks quite beautiful. Some people are able to pull the fully tattooed look off. It’s like fashion: you don’t want the tattoos to wear you. Her artwork is cohesive and well-done. I get that tattoos aren’t for everyone, and they do correlate with mental illness, but are you really shaming mental illness on this board?

by Anonymousreply 29September 3, 2021 3:08 PM

R29, mental illness isn't "shameful". Rather, it's patently undesirable. It's like having celiac disease: not voluntary, nothing good about it, super suboptimal, and the expression of the disease isn't anything to laud.

Just because something was previously shamed, but isn't anymore, doesn't mean it's now a good thing or something to be celebrated. Mental illness is still a terrible thing that needs to be addressed, if the sufferer wants to live a life within the band of normalcy.

And yes, tattooing is deemed correlated with mental illness in the scientific community. But you might know better. Maybe you're on the cutting-edge of research and have advanced degrees in medicine and psychiatry?

[quote] A study conducted by the Centre for Forensic Psychiatry, Michigan Department of Community Health shows that those with a desire to get inked are at a greater risk of suffering from antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Not just that, the tattooed ones are more prone to substance abuse, sexual abuse and suicide attempts compared to those with a clean body. Researchers have concluded that tattoos are indicators of mental illness, lack of foresight and promiscuous behaviour.

Patients with ASPD also had a significantly greater number of tattoos, a trend toward having a greater percentage of their total body surface area tattooed, and were more likely to have a history of substance abuse than patients without ASPD. Tattooed subjects, with or without ASPD, were significantly more likely to have histories of substance abuse, sexual abuse and suicide attempts than non-tattooed patients.

[quote] Results: The statistical analysis of acquired results showed a significant correlation between body modifications and psychological and personality disorder and psychopathologies. TAS-20 test results highlighted a significant difference between tattoo and piercing groups and control group (F=29.066; p=0.000). The tattoo group showed results closed to alexithymic values. The SHI test proved a significant difference between groups related to self-harm behaviors too (F=80.416; p=0.000). PGWBI results suggest a link between body modification and psychological goodness (F=19.522; p=0.000): precisely the body modifications affect negatively the psychological goodness. The ANOVA clearly shows a significant correlation between piercing and tattoo groups and psychological distress. As regards the dissociative disorder evaluation, while the DES II test results of all groups are within the healthy people common range; however the ANOVA highlights a significant trend towards dissociative disorder limit for piercing and tattoo groups. The ANOVA statistical evaluation of BSI test results provides evidence of borderline disorders on piercing group samples. The tattoo group lays on the test healthy range but the results show a significant higher mean value on the tattoo group compared with control group. Chi-square test, used to highlight all possible connections between analyzed variables, confirmed a significant correlation only between PGWBI results and number of tattoos and piercing and between gender and body modification type, tattoos prevail on male samples while piercing on female ones.

[quote] Conclusion: The study successfully achieved the proposed objectives, proving statistically a correlation between body modifications and different forms and/or traits of psychological and personality disorders (i.e. borderline personality disorder).

The mentally ill have no place evangelizing bodily modifications. Particularly odious is doing it in a foreign country with a very different culture, where the evangelizer presumes she's more enlightened.

[quote] Compared to women without tattoos, women with tattoos showed significantly lower self-esteem and displayed stronger relationships between three constructs: ideal body, ideal self and tattooed woman status. No significant differences in body image were detected between the two groups. Women with tattoos were characterized by an association between body image and self-esteem, while women without tattoos did not display such a correlation. Thus, it appears that links between self-esteem, ideal body, ideal self and constructs of "woman with tattoos" may play a role in tattooing behavior in young women.

The fact that so many DLers obsess over mental illness and it’s supposed markers, indicates to me that many of you are probably mentally ill. It is as if you are pointing the finger at other people as a means to separate yourselves and say, ‘See? This is the way people with mental problems behave!’, trying to convince others you are a picture of sanity. Obsessing over other people and attacking them for choices that do not impact you is just bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 43September 3, 2021 6:52 PM

Where is the "excessive" line drawn?

by Anonymousreply 48September 3, 2021 7:03 PM

Good golly [r30], etc. I didn’t say that mental illness is laudable. You sure went on an odd rampage about it, though. After being raped, I got a few tattoos. My sister did the same. It’s a bit simplistic to lump tattooed people into a general category of “mentally ill.” A tattooed person can go to therapy, take prescribed medications, and live a healthy, emotionally-wise life. Their tattoos won’t indicate active mental illness; in the sense that doctors and laypeople need to be wary.

by Anonymousreply 49September 3, 2021 7:13 PM

R14 Koine Greek. In 2014 they found a papyrus wrapped around a mummy and discovered it was a tax exemption document for one of Mark Antony’s friends to live tax free in Alexandria. Historians believe the sign off to the document was Cleopatra’s. She signed “Ginesthoi” as her tag signature which means “Make It So”. Most Ptolemies used tags to sign off on documents which is why they’re pretty sure it’s hers. Most photos of it are very hard to read but I’ve gotten the highest quality one and worked it out in photoshop so it’s legible. It looks like it says “JINROY” at first but enhancing the photo and etc, it’s clearly not. She wrote it in cursive which makes it harder to see the words too but I’ve got it!

I’m a big Cleopatra fan, I love the idea of having 2,000+ year old writing as a tattoo, and the meaning “Make It So” is just a positive and motivating meaning to me. It’s a cool conversation piece too.

r12 when I worked it retail and told a girl it was my cancer sign she actually thought I had survived cancer and the 69 was my patient number or something lol.

R47 You're right and it drives me nuts, because I still fall for it. I've been talking to this guy a bit, we get along great so far, but he has the tattoo sleeves, tats on his back, tat over heart that looks all fucked up, and a few tats on his legs, and says he wants more! Ugh!!! I have none and don't ever want any.

He has the whole rugged masc thing going on but this obsession with tats is so bizarre. And although, I kinda feel like I'm falling for him, the tat thing makes me take a step back and question what the fuck is wrong with him. Just in some conversations we had, I know he has some deep insecurities even though he still looks good, he's fit and athletic.

I want to be able to look past it but it does make wonder what I'm getting into.

I suspect it's a sign of some kind of mental illness or condition to be as triggered and worked up as some of you are about other people having tattoos. OCD? I have no tattoos, but I could not care less whether other people have them. Many of them look really good. Some don't. But I don't get why you need to prove it's a sign of mental illness, or whatever. Didn't some native Americans and Canadians have tattoos? And Polynesians? Were they all mentally ill? What's wrong with you people? I think you need to ask yourselves.

It’s really just groupthink for teens or 20somethings. Social media has put a rocket on it.

Most of them are from comfortable families but want to be seen as wrong-side-of-the-tracks bad asses so they get inked up like carnies.

The funniest thing about it is how many of them are vegans and super health conscious, but they don’t stop to think about all those ultra-toxic heavy metals they are injecting into their system — heavy metals don’t ever leave.

by Anonymousreply 75September 4, 2021 7:17 PM

It is ugly, and we have to look at it. Also, it's not difficult to imagine someone with tattoos as having criminal intentions. If someone would do that to himself, who knows what he might do to someone else? I would worry about whether he was going to stab me 100 times, as we read about today in another thread.

by Anonymousreply 85September 5, 2021 1:01 AM

Tattoos look ridiculous and pitiful to those without one. The only folks who think *your* tattoo is really cool are those with similar ones. If you later change your mind about having the tattoo, you feel *really* stupid. Those with brand-new tattoos just *love* showing it off to their friends, not recognizing that most of their friends are going to think they're silly (unless their friends *already* have tattoos).

In this respect, having a tattoo is very similar to belonging to a religion.
