MET Gala May Be A Bust This Year

Facebook and Instagram have bought up tons of tables. Many A-Listers are staying away but in their place fuck tons of "influencers...". Has the MET ball peaked?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 580September 19, 2021 8:07 PM

Oh and people aren't thrilled about mask mandate either...

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 1September 2, 2021 11:09 AM

So, as I've never given this thing a thought beyond eye roll, do you get invited to buy a ticket or is it two classes: paid entry and those who get the barely perceptible nod from Anna?

by Anonymousreply 2September 2, 2021 11:12 AM
Among the rumored newcomers is . . . YouTuber Emma Chamberlain, who is 20 and dropped out of high school to vlog about her life for her 10.5 million subscribers, is also reportedly on the guest list.

Jesus fucking Christ, is this what qualifies as celebrity these days? No wonder no one wants to go.

by Anonymousreply 3September 2, 2021 11:15 AM

Agreed with R3; I think the inclusion of the Kardashians ruined the Met Gala. They just drag everything down - ask Lamar & Brucella!

Whatever the Met Gala started out as, it's clearly "over" now

by Anonymousreply 4September 2, 2021 11:25 AM

Met ball has really been a mixed bunch for years now.

Recall one year walking down Fifth avenue spied R. Couri Hay in formal wear dashing up the other way. He'd just gotten off the M79 crosstown bus apparently and was making his way to the "red carpet".

by Anonymousreply 5September 2, 2021 11:27 AM

That's a shame.

by Anonymousreply 6September 2, 2021 11:38 AM

The fun thing is, imagine how Wintour feels. She gazes upon the tawdry spectacle before her and has to think: "But she was so beautiful when she was young."

by Anonymousreply 7September 2, 2021 12:27 PM

It's a metaphor for what's happening in NYC. The truly classy people and events are being taken over by the cheap and tawdry "influencers" and publicity whores.

by Anonymousreply 8September 2, 2021 1:41 PM

The MET gala was ruined once it turned to being celebrities instead of people in the fashion world.

by Anonymousreply 9September 2, 2021 1:46 PM

It was ruined when it started. Just decadent rich people preening and hoping that commoners will fawn over them.

Fuck them

by Anonymousreply 10September 2, 2021 1:50 PM

None of YOU are invited!! Hissssssssss

by Anonymousreply 11September 2, 2021 1:50 PM

Kind of a big- assed Halloween Party for the 1%.

This thing was officially dead after that year in which all the younger celebs took bathroom selfies while smoking. An embarrassment to the museum.

by Anonymousreply 14September 2, 2021 1:59 PM

The goal is to raise money. Like it not, influencers raise money, awareness, and get clicks. It's like when you guys lost your minds about rappers and Kardashians showing up. A rapper or influencer's money is the same color of green as J. Worthington Gottrocks III's money. Some of you need to take a long, hard look at what is considered class and wealth these days and throw out your ancient notions about those things. And quite frankly, DL's notion of what is wealth and class comes from the Preppy Handbook from the 1980s, which was meant as a satire and old movies on TCM.

by Anonymousreply 15September 2, 2021 2:00 PM

The same trashification that led to “influencers” dominating popular culture also led to phrases like “fuck tons.”

by Anonymousreply 16September 2, 2021 2:01 PM
Facebook and Instagram have bought up tons of tables.

One of this year's honorary chairs (along with Wintour and Tom Ford) is the head of Instagram so it makes sense to invite influencers.
This thing was officially dead after that year in which all the younger celebs took bathroom selfies while smoking.

I agree; that's when it jumped the shark. But there aren't any real celebrities anymore and the "names" that got the most traction in recent years at the Gala were the Kardashians ore singers like Rihanna, Beyonce and Cardi B.

by Anonymousreply 17September 2, 2021 2:19 PM

That Anna lady should stick with the sunglasses and frown. She’s spooky.

by Anonymousreply 18September 2, 2021 2:22 PM

99.99% of the people who attend the Met gala never step foot in the museum the rest of the year.

by Anonymousreply 19September 2, 2021 2:26 PM

It could be interesting if they pulled a Caesar on Anna and all stabbed her and ended her tyranny.

by Anonymousreply 20September 2, 2021 2:28 PM

Peaked when Kim K showed & shot of Ye w shit pants. Also helped along w. that svelte fashion icon Ms. Lens.

Its a Must to Avoid

by Anonymousreply 21September 2, 2021 2:39 PM

Fuck! It won't be a bust as I'm going this year! You plebs can kowtow to me.

by Anonymousreply 22September 2, 2021 2:41 PM

Funny it should be over just in time for her to arrive.

by Anonymousreply 23September 2, 2021 2:44 PM

Well Hollywood is effectively dead at this point anyway. May as well drag in the E-celebs to fill the void.

by Anonymousreply 24September 2, 2021 2:48 PM

R15 is Ed-Weenie if I've ever seen an Ed-Weenie post. He probably created this thread. Congrats, our dear Ed-Weenie!

(And yes, the Met went to the dogs the year the Kardashians and Hadids were papped smoking on the bathroom floor.)

by Anonymousreply 25September 2, 2021 2:50 PM
The co-hosts are all 25 and under: Singer Billie Eilish, actor Timothée Chalamet, tennis champ Naomi Osaka and poet Amanda Gorman, who shot to fame after her performance at Joe Biden’s January inauguration. Wintour, designer Tom Ford and Instagram head Adam Mosseri will serve as honorary chairs.

I'm already bored

by Anonymousreply 26September 2, 2021 2:58 PM

R26: Collectively they have zero talent.

by Anonymousreply 27September 2, 2021 5:12 PM

The stars are expected to arrive after 5:00. Should be quite the parade.

by Anonymousreply 28September 13, 2021 8:57 PM

It's definitely on the way out. I saw one of the leaked table seating arrangements.

It had Gaga and Beyonce...so a great start. Two A plus listers. And then some unknown youtubers.

I can't imagine Gaga and Beyonce really want to hang out with internet trash.

by Anonymousreply 29September 13, 2021 9:42 PM

The ball is flush with effluencers.

by Anonymousreply 30September 13, 2021 10:06 PM

Oh for fuck's sake, they're holding during a pandemic surge when hospitals are being overwhelmed all over the country?

by Anonymousreply 31September 13, 2021 10:07 PM

Amanda Gorman looks stunning.

by Anonymousreply 32September 13, 2021 10:27 PM

T.C. is just in a white suit. He looks nice but I was expecting something a lot more extravagant for the occasion.

by Anonymousreply 34September 13, 2021 10:33 PM

Fashionista Sarah Jessica Parker must be horrified at the guest list.

Fucking Kardashians and their fellow ilk influencers have ruined the world.

by Anonymousreply 35September 13, 2021 10:36 PM

Ratboy and a bunch of tiktok influencer nobodies. RIP Met Ball.

by Anonymousreply 36September 13, 2021 10:38 PM

That's not true, R11. I went years ago, and I also go to the MET every time I am in NYC, which hasn't been in a few years now.

by Anonymousreply 37September 13, 2021 10:40 PM

Who are these people? I don't recognize any of them 😭

by Anonymousreply 38September 13, 2021 10:40 PM

The year before last, we were walking on Madison and 84th and ran into a teenage neighbor and her little friends. She gushingly reported that they had seen James Charles!

by Anonymousreply 39September 13, 2021 10:42 PM

Billie Eilish glams it up.

by Anonymousreply 40September 13, 2021 10:43 PM

Gaga’s going to be there? It is definitely over. She’s try hard trash. Beyoncé has more talent in her finger than that song writing credit stealing, honking voiced fugly drug addled cunt.

by Anonymousreply 41September 13, 2021 10:45 PM

R33 A suit by Colombian-born French designer Haider Ackermann. The theme of the Gala this year is America. And I know no-one dresses to theme, but he is a co-host, so he could've made an effort.

Oh and that seating plan was a fake.

by Anonymousreply 42September 13, 2021 10:45 PM

Billie Eyelash's 15 minutes is up. Once she ditched the mumus there was nothing unique about her left.

And opaque black tights.

She looked like a crazy lady.

To the people who've asked - in 2019 anyway, a ticket was $35,000. Companies will buy a table and then give tickets away to their favourite celebs. But of course, the more desperate will pay themselves. But even then Anna has to approve everyone. Apparently 2019 made $13 million for the Met.

WOW. Alicia Keys looks beautiful. As beautiful as she did 20 years ago. A woman. Her dress is perfect and very harmonious with the Jewels and hair. She looks sporty and elegant. She should still play Lena Horne.

JLo looks like a literal pimp. Keke Palmer did the 70s throwback look just right. Including going heavy on the makeup. With that Ms Ross flat chest and sequined high water booty dress. 😍

JHud looks glamorous and beautiful too. Not high fashion, but regal and gorgeous.

Kaia Gerber has a beautiful dress and Lil Nas X and Bieber both look sexy and fashion as fuck.

There are people who are treating it like Halloween but others are doing homages, which to me has a different intent. Yara Shahidi is honoring Josephine Baker, Gemma Chan is honoring Anna May Wong, is honoring Marilyn Monroe.
this is a fundraising event. the co chairs get people to open their wallets

The co-chairs seemingly have nothing to do and are just figureheads. The money from the tickets -almost all bought by designers/fashion houses - go towards the institute. And according to a story a few years back the Costume Institute is paying out more than what they bring in.

by Anonymousreply 250September 14, 2021 12:54 AM

'DL's notion of what is wealth and class comes from the Preppy Handbook from the 1980s.'

The Met gala was once attended by New York's wealthy influential movers and shakers who cared about the city and were often mentioned in the city's papers. These people had a class and style(no matter how they may have behaved behind the scenes) which was pretty much gone by the 90s when they became extinct. The Preppy Handbook made fun of them. That doesn't mean they didn't exist.

Anna Wintour because of being born too late got stuck with the celebrity trash that can get the most publicity in the NY Post. It doesn't mean she really wants them there. It's all she's got.

Sean looks like he won a contest to hang with celebrities and be at awards shows for the weekend.

Seems so bland and basic. How did he ever get a record deal? He is a terrible, tinny singer who whines and cloys his way through a performance.

Offstage, he has the charisma of a statue. On stage, he looks like he misses his mom and wants to go back home. In interviews, he seems uncool and unremarkable.

Then there is the showmance relationship that we are supposed to buy with this pop starlet and yet he keeps the assistant boyfriend within pecking distance at all times.

I just don’t get the whole thing. He seems like he wants to tear out of his skin and be anywhere else doing anything else than what he is doing right now.

I went to the MET Ball in the 80s when I was in my 20s. The days of the ancient X-Rays, and Wall Street barracudas. Back then "young friends" went after dinner. I wore a midnight blue Saks Fifth Avenue Tuxedo from the 60s and army patent leather shoes both times I went. 39L and it was loose. I was skinny, like the X-Rays! It was not a good party and these new crowds of "nobodies and trash" according to some of you looks like a lot more fun, and the crazy outfits can be inventive and fashion forward. People have a rosy memory of the last gasp of High Society like it was so classy but meh. Lots of the men were pigs. Many of the women were deeply superficial and not fun. Often to have fun they would go downtown after uptown balls. Now the nightclub crowd is at the ball.

Anna 'Nuclear Winter' Wintour has essentially ruined US VOGUE.

VOGUE was an important cutting edge fashion magazine, not anymore. How about putting actual fashion models on her magazine covers, not D-List celebrities and lame-ass 'influencers'.

Looking at the Met Gala's guest list over the past few years, AW needs to re-name the magazine VAGUE. That perfectly describes where AW has taken this once extremely influential fashion magazine.

AW needs to retire, I'm sick of her rat face and her ridiculous Dutch Boy Paint hairstyle.

by Anonymousreply 373September 14, 2021 1:48 PM

Someone upthread asked about the cost of the tickets. Tickets are $35,000 each. It's assumed NONE of the guests ever pay to enter the Gala. Not sure who would be stupid enough to pay that much.

Anna Wintour welds such power, even if a company pays for a full table, IIRC, a table is around $200,000. Wintour must then APPROVE every guest at each table, all guests must pass her scrutiny. What a joke. Especially seeing the reality show trash she's invited.

Oh come on now. That woman is trying to keep a dying industry alive. She is putting people on the covers who are going to sell magazines to the very few people who still buy magazines.

by Anonymousreply 377September 14, 2021 2:23 PM

I'm not an Anna Wintour stan. I happen to not harbour the vitriol that others do for her (maybe it's because I've never met her and daresay I don't think I'd want to). That said, I can never understand why she put Kim K. on the cover of American Vogue. My (limited) understanding of being a fashion model is that you really work to get your portfolio into spiffing order, then whore yourself around to agencies.

Getting a cover shot on Vogue is often the first of the rungs on the ladder to the top. Even if it's the zenith of your career, it's something that not everybody can achieve. Then along comes a z-list reality telly star, and shitomotherfuckingdear, the value of being a Vogue cover model turns into day old toilet paper left on the floor of the bathroom.

Why, Anna, WHY?

by Anonymousreply 378September 14, 2021 2:35 PM

Because Kim K on a cover will sell more magazines than a model. We are well past the days of Cindy, Naomi and all the others. It's a different world now.

by Anonymousreply 379September 14, 2021 2:41 PM

r378 THANK YOU. Having Kim K on the cover was the end of American Vogue, it reeked of desperation on AW's part. Ick.
Oh come on now. That woman is trying to keep a dying industry alive. She is putting people on the covers who are going to sell magazines to the very few people who still buy magazines.

Your posts shows me how clueless you are. Fashion is not dying. As long as there are rich people, fashion and over priced clothes will never die. I work in advertising, in both the music and fashion industries, I've worked in these fields for years, rich people, especially the nouveau riche, spend money on such useless crap.

Stupid people buy items based on the celebrities who hawk them, others simply buy what they like. If an ad or commercial appeals to people they purchase items. As far as music, as long as a band is established and still produces good music, their fans will continue buying their music. Die hard longtime fans don't need gimmicks in order to suck them into buying their fave's music.

The rich people, especially those who are stupid enough to pay thousands for a piece of rag, will keep fashion alive and are still doing so. They don't need Vogue or Anna Wintour. Lots of rich people have no taste, they are impressed by a label. I bet if you put a Prada label on something from Target, a nouveau riche shopper wouldn't know the difference! .

I watch YouTube videos of a couple who buy abandoned storage lockers, there most recent acquisition was a locker they bought for just ONE dollar. In that locker, there were thousands of dollars worth of high end brands: Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, all authenticated as being real, all still tagged. Who needs ten blouses of the same style in different colors? Even the kids items were high-end. Talk about conspicuous consumption!

Viewers were curious why the locker was abandoned, especially as selling just a few of the high-end items would have surely covered a few months of the lockers back rent.
Kit Harington and Ross Leslie.

I suppose that typo is apt since she always looks more masculine than he does.

That yellow dress must have been taped onto the vey ends of her drooping small boobs. Do these people not look ion the mirror before they leave home?

So my question is: if someone is on location and then attends the Met Gala, do they have to get Covid tested before they can return to set? I read they had to wear masks inside but do the pictures bear that out? I hope this wasn't a Delta super spreader. Why would you take this risk?

If what someone is wearing is bigger than they are, it's not fashion. At least in the olden days, wealthy women and stars knew they were stupid and were only revered for their looks. They learned not to talk much to reporters and simply look divine. The only look I saw that impressed me was Kaia Gerber. The dress, the simplicity of her hair, wristwatch -- all brilliant. Only a beautiful person can pull that off. It made me think her parents are hoping to marry her off to minor European royalty-- something a nouveau riche couple would dream of.

The Valentino group of Carey Mulligan, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Mock and Normani were boring. As was the Stella McCartney group of Julia Garner and Kamala Harris' stepdaughter Ella.

The best dressed person repping Balenciaga was Rihanna. Plus, she was the only one in that group who somewhat adhered to the theme as she reminded me of a flapper.

R426 of course you were, and I got it. I have no real interest in any of these people. I find them all boring and unattractive, for the most part. What does interest me is a look which stands out because it isn't outrageous. No confident, beautiful woman or man wants to look outrageous. They want to look at ease. That chick in the M. Monroe getup was pathetic. She couldn't walk or talk and she looked frumpy. Like a beast, the media must be fed, and it's not picky what the morsels are.

I work in advertising, in both the music and fashion industries, I've worked in these fields for years, rich people, especially the nouveau riche, spend money on such useless crap.

Where did I say fashion is dying? I said print magazines are dying. Which, if you work in advertising, you already know this since it is not a big secret since millions of articles and think pieces have already been written about this very topic and Anna Wintour's challenge to keep Vogue relevant. The role that fashion magazines used to play is now all online. The types of people who Anna Wintour and the like would have turned their noses up at 5, 10. 15 years ago are now the ones driving the conversation about what fashion is.

I don’t think J Lo looked that bad the problem was she was dressed for an editorial. It could have been very Americana with JLo on a prairie on some hay in that outfit with some horses. You can see the inspiration there. Up close she was gorgeous.

I think it would have photographed beautifully at dusk but it clashed with that office carpet they had at the met. That carpet clashed with a lot of looks, not sure if anybody pointed that out.

I don’t know what JLo does but she is absolutely flawless. Her face and body are both perfect. I think she had her hips shaved down or she wears them well but her body is outrageous. Her music is kind of iffy but she made some good movies and showed some potential for some real roles but her type of movie isn’t really made anymore. Too bad.

Not sure what to expect from her going forward but hate to see her get bashed up and down the last 24 hours.

It’s easy to forget that JLo was a breath of fresh air when she first came out (although that moniker came later). She was almost underground at first, and for a short while, the gays had her mostly to themselves.

She was much more a ‘dance chart single’ artist but clawed her way to the top. Not an easy feat but she did it.

by Anonymousreply 455September 15, 2021 2:07 AM

I believe Jennifer Lopez has never smoked a cigarette or been hammered in her life. She's also never been too thin. Which, to misquote Hansel, has completely changed my perspective on shit. I want to look like her when I'm 50. Pleasure be damned.

I agree. Up close, her look was incredible and very spot on. I thought the theme was Americana but in reading the full description it's a celebration of American fashion and the feelings it invokes. That said, I still thought the best looks captured "Americana" so I liked Leon Bridges and Pharrell Williams wearing cowboy wear.

I’ve never watched the live stream before; just flipped through the photos on Twitter and elsewhere the next day. Obviously there’s a difference between seeing an outfit in motion vs a still photo. Some photograph better when they are posed (Iman) and some look better when they are moving (Tracee Ellis Ross).

Granted the live hosts have a difficult job but are they really necessary? All I’m interested in is, who is it, who’s the guy she’s with, who designed the gown. The non-stop squealing, shrieking, and gushing got on my last nerve. Also I don’t understand how it works, which celebrity talks to which host? Is there some kind of ranking, like ET is at the top so they get first pick?
That woman is trying to keep a dying industry alive. She is putting people on the covers who are going to sell magazines to the very few people who still buy magazines.

Dying industry? Fashion or fashion magazines or BOTH?

Intelligent stylish people, the ones who saw mags like Vogue, Bazaar and ELLE as their fashion bibles, likely don't care what some 20 year old 'influencers' have to say about fashion. I know I could give a shit about influencers and reality show assholes, the empty uninteresting people Anna Wintour now seems to be embracing with open arms. Doesn't she care about her dedicated readers and others who can afford designer clothes?

"The types of people who Anna Wintour and the like would have turned their noses up at 5, 10. 15 years ago are now the ones driving the conversation about what fashion is." This certainly isn't 100% true, on a very superficial level, yes, but never across the board, surely not among the intelligent well educated rich women who are into fashion and are not into looking like clowns and fashion victims. Even the younger women who come from old money, they laugh at most of this nonsense.

For example, do you think Estee Lauder's heiress granddaughters would take fashion advice from a 20 year old influencer who can barely articulate herself and likely doesn't know much about the history of fashion, influential fashion photographers and fashion designers. Even in today's fashion mags, the clothes look like costumes, not elegant wearable clothes people can actually wear. It's all theater. Theater of the absurd. What's the deal with sneakers and shoes which make people feet look like horse hooves? Why is ugly fashion always pushed on people? To prove that most people are gullible?

Influencers are mostly clueless people who push brands because they get everything for free, Who would listen to such people? These influencers know so little about the history of fashion or much of anything else. It's obvious, all they want is fame, with little or no talent to back it up. Much in the same way Drumpf has destroyed the US status around the world, Anna Wintour has made Vogue a complete laughingstock. With each passing year, she digs herself into a deeper hole.

If people allow certain positive institutions to vanish simply because a new breed of people want to destroy them with their silly advice and opinions, one would hope, intelligent people could easily see beyond all the fake artifice, ugly overpriced clothing and bullshit. I laughed out loud in recent NY Times fashion magazine they produce every few months, a male model was in cheesy looking shirt which cost $10,000, seriously?

by Anonymousreply 475September 15, 2021 2:49 PM

Over the years I've worked with truly elegant and stylish people, people from all socio-economic backgrounds, most of these people had their own innate style. That's the most important factor about fashion and style, it's usually innate.

These people had, and have, something so many of these Met Gala freaks lack, true class and innate style! Just because someone is famous, doesn't mean they automatically have true style.

These people I've worked with over the years, had, and have, the ability to make even cheap clothes look fashionable, that is what true style is about. To technically make a silk purse out of a sow's ear! To take a basic white shirt and make it look stylish.

Most of the freaks Anna Wintour has invited to the Met Gala over the past few years don't have innate style, slapping a $100,000 costume on these people doesn't change that glaring fact.

That said, I think Rhianna aways stands out, I'm not even a fan of her music, but she always manages to look good in whatever she wears to these events. The only failure was the horrible gladiator boots with the Comme des Garcons gown, Rei Kawakubo certainly wouldn't choose gladiator boots to be worn with any of her clothing! Otherwise, Rhianna hasn't failed yet at this event. Even the 'omelet' gown was great.

Fashion magazines. Fashion isn't dying, not by a long shot, however it is going through a major cultural change.
For example, do you think Estee Lauder's heiress granddaughters would take fashion advice from a 20 year old influencer who can barely articulate herself and likely doesn't know much about the history of fashion, influential fashion photographers and fashion designers.

And here is my issue with a lot of people on DL in threads like these, and I'm guilty of it too. You're stuck in a world that no longer exists - if it ever did. What do Estee Lauder's granddaughters have to do with anything? And it's that kind of better than you attitude, that has driven the fashion conversation straight to social media people and influencers. And it's why the mainstream fashion industry is falling all over itself to be diverse and inclusive to try and catch up with what's really happening in the real world.

And the heirs of what's left of that whole ladies who lunch demographic are dressing just like everyone else, just like the influencers, just like the actresses.

by Anonymousreply 492September 15, 2021 11:54 PM
And it's that kind of better than you attitude, that has driven the fashion conversation straight to social media people and influencers.

Disagree. This 'better than you' attitude has always been widespread in the fashion industry and related circles. Anna Wintour is the living embodiment of it. R480 has got it right. This change isn't about a change of philosophy or heart, it's about what it's always, at bottom, about: $$$. There's a reason some social media influencers make big $ and are heavily courted by brands and it's not because people suddenly woke up one day and thought hey let's give these good-hearted newcomers a go! No. It's money. It's why Wintour first started putting actresses instead of models on the cover of Vogue, it's why Kim Kardashian eventually got a Gala invite (and a Vogue cover), and it's why the red carpet was thick with Tiktok kids and social-media famous make-up artists this year.

It's trying to stay relevant, and for an organization like Conde Nast, which is not actually an artist's collective no matter how deeply some of its higher-up employees seem to think it is, trying to stay relevant is about nothing more than advertiser dollars. That's it. It's no more complex than that. Addison Rae is at the Met Gala and the Estee Lauder descendants aren't because Addison Rae has millions of followers on social media and the EL ladies don't.

TL;DR Capitalism

Cannot say exactly when change came about, but it did happen.

Late as 1990's and early part of 2000's fashion and all connected to it including glossy mags were still the rage. People ran to get September issues and so forth. Think sometime by late 2000's into 2010's things began going down hill.

Rise of internet, social media, advances in technology have meant Vouge and the rest aren't gate keepers any longer. MET gala being filled with Instagram nobodies and others who are really only famous for that sort of thing proves my point.

by Anonymousreply 495September 16, 2021 1:10 AM

Hillary Clinton on the cover of Vogue was much worse than Kim K. At least Kardashian runs a fashion empire. But none of that matters. Move on. Don't watch the Met Gala. Nothing is special anymore. Next week is the Emmys. Get upset about that.

People are perpetually pissed off about nothing. Lil Nas X IS a fashion breakout star. It happens. He makes old white fags uneasy. He's too obviously sexual and gay and having a great time with a BIG Dick and great body and that jewelled bodysuit was FIRE. Rihanna looked like Norma Desmond. Stop ascribing qualities to people based on your aging resources. Della loves Angelina Jolie. That fucking plastic vampire. Who cares?

Go to the ballet. The symphony.... a jazz club. Some art remains somewhat pure and up to standards.

Or just freak the fuck out. The attendees of the Met Gala were mostly hideous. But not as bad of people as Jackie Onassis. Gross. The past is exactly that. Give it up old white gay men. Your time is UP! You're representative was Dan Levy. Enjoy him.

Tina Fey attended the Met Gala one year. She called it a "jerk parade" and she mentioned Donald Trump by name. Before he was POSTUS. Tina said that she felt so uncomfortable that she went and sat with Barbara Walters, because she was most normal person there. He delivery implied she didn't mean it as a compliment. Of course Tina would love to be on the cover of Vogue too. Hopefully not. But success goes to the head of most all people. Name one who doesn't glow up or try to with fame and attention. Billie Eilish seems like she's was tampered with when she was a kid. Everything about her display throughout her young career screams I'm special - LOOK AT ME but leave me alone. LOOK AT ME. So fuck Kyra and Kevin, Janet Jackson and Sandra Bullock. They're whores who can't turn down a luxury trip.
[R489] you don't think these social media stars/influencers have a "better than you" attitude?

I think the influencers have a more aspirational attitude. Their followers connect with them on a different level. It's more intimate and personal.

Then the Kardashians came along and really let people into "a version" of their lives and people really connected with them. I know a lot of you on here think they are nothing but whores and trash who only fuck black guys, but people related to them.

And then the other influencers and social media types started blowing up because they were connecting. All of a sudden gender is not important, being plus size is okay. Plus size models and size inclusive outfits from some of these designers was unheard of until recently. I remember that designer on Project Runway, Michael something or other. He kept designing outfits with an "urban" sensibility and Nina and Kors would always talk about his taste level.

Now, they're all doing urban inspired outfits and have models that have big asses and who don't weigh 98 pounds.

A few years ago Leslie Jones complained that no designers wanted to work with her. Then Christian Siriano did which really started something in that industry.

And, yes, I do realize that it's all about money. And I do realize that Anna Wintour probably dies a little bit inside every time she has to cozy up to one of these people.

While here on DL we are still stuck in the age of supermodels and glitz and glamour and class based fashion, everyone else has moved on, including Estee Lauder's granddaughters.

Only if I could bring a Plus One with a sense of humor, because since I'm not famous and not part of the fashion industry... none of the other guests would talk to me! But if I had a Plus One with a sense of humor, we could snark at the other guests and their outfits, we'd get thrown out for being bitches, and we'd have a great time and have eternal bragging rights because we got thrown out of the Met Ball.
I think the influencers have a more aspirational attitude. Their followers connect with them on a different level. It's more intimate and personal.

R505, you actually believe this? Actually certain aspects haven’t changed at all, it’s all merely shifted. It’s now a different group of people who are parading around in over-priced designer clothing, looking haughty and acting superior. It’s amazing how so few here get this.

The sentiments are 100% the same, as is the attitude. It’s the same “you cannot sit with us” bullshit as it was when when the super models, the socialites and yes, even Estee Lauder’s granddaughters, all the fashionista types who would never mingle with the lower classes, the commoners. However, the new contingent, the people Anna Wintour now embraces, sure want the people they all look down upon, to purchase whatever crap they are hawking.

The only difference between the old and new guards, it’s now a mixed group of rich people, not a bunch of old money white society women and their extremely rich husbands, it's rich and famous people from all ethnic groups, races, body types, with different types of careers etc.

However, the common denominator is that most of Anna Wintour's new minions are all rich and famous and none, and I repeat, NONE of these exalted individuals will ever truly welcome the common folk. Anna's new crowd are being used by the fashion industry to sell things to gullible people.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

As The Who song 'Won't Get Fooled Again' states: "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…."

Jen Hudson should have turned the occasion into a [italic] For Your Consideration [/italic] moment. Go on an eating binge for three months, put on 300 pounds, get fake tits and then wear a circa 2005 hot ass mess Aretha outfit. Spaghetti straps so tight they cut off her circulation, monstrous tits that start in Manhattan and rest in Queens, the outfit and a cheap wig making her look like a drag version of Ursula.

That would have been a true tribute to Aretha from her HAM (Hot Ass Mess) period.

This was a good documentary about preparing for the Met gala. Lots of talented people involved, Anna being Anna, and the breathtaking final result. Celebs are shown, too walking through the exhibits. It’s on Netflix I believe.
I think the influencers have a more aspirational attitude. Their followers connect with them on a different level. It's more intimate and personal.

R505 That "intimate and personal" connection you're describing is just a new type of marketing for a social media world. Think about how many of these influencers have a "brand." It's no mere coincidence they have a brand and do sponsorpships and sell their "merch." They get a taste of extreme levels of money, power, and vanity at a very young age and inhabit a social media ecosystem that rewards reveling in it. The more extreme the better.

If you think they're immune to having egos or different than the "better than thou" of yesteryear, you're unfamiliar with human nature.
Met ball has really been a mixed bunch for years now.

Referring to it as the "Met ball" makes you sound like quite a rube.

Wintour is no dummy. She needs to raise money for her advertisers, adapt to influencer culture and maintain Vogue's cachet. She'll keep a close eye on the ad dollars and who is actually buying the products featured in the magazine. The established designers grooming new talent are thinking about their businesses following their retirement.

She might split the gala into two separate events, one geared towards the cool kids and another to the more sophisticated crowd.

Say what you will about Wintour but she didn't get her job because she lacks vision or a sense of the prevailing winds.

by Anonymousreply 524September 16, 2021 8:27 AM

R518, I drafted a "the more things change" reply! We're soulmates! But you're wrong about one aspect- the fashion and stars ARE the common folk. Beautiful common folk. Lauder was a Jewish beautician who struggled for acceptance, Cindy Crawford shucked corn on a farm, and half those influencers are middle or upper middle class and deeply aspirational. The upper class follows lower class fashion sold by middle class merchants marketed by beautiful faces of all classes.

by Anonymousreply 525September 16, 2021 12:12 PM

R518 AND R522, I don't think we're on different sides here. But the connection is more intimate and personal, regardless of whether or not the influencers think they're on some higher level. Their fans still feel something with them that they don't with models and actors. And brands and designers use this to their advantage.

I have a bunch of 20somethings on my staff. I listen to the way they talk about these influencers and it reminds me of the way my grandma used to talk about actors on soap operas. The connection was different to those actors versus actors on primetime or on the big screen. Jennifer Aniston, a big A list star, noted this when she mentioned going out with her father who is a big soap opera star and how often she would be off to the side while fans gathered around him. They were excited to see her, but more excited to see Victor from Days of our Lives.

Like soap opera actors who were on small screens and in people's houses everyday, these influencers are the same. They're on small screens and in people's lives every day with each new post. It's a tight relationship and that's why brands are using influencers instead of big stars to push products.

And why people relate to influencers is because anybody can do it. All you need is a phone, a social media account and a little bit of luck.
My point was that Lil Nas X seems to make some elder white gays unhappy. They don't know why - but I do.

Do you?

It's because sometimes he is vulgar. The vulgarizing of a society is a very slippery slope and we have already vulgarized it so far that we are near the bottom.

That vulgarity infects and poisons everything. Everything. All races, gay, straight, adults, children. Behavior, standards, relationships, government, politics, the arts, education, and on and on.

You think the vulgarization of society didn't lead to the likes of Donald Trump in the White House and Marjorie Taylor Greene in Congress then think again. Some people may be able to separate it out and understand "there is a time and a place for everything" but the vast majority of people cannot or will not.

I probably won't be around to see the backlash but it's just human nature that makes it inevitable.

by Anonymousreply 538September 16, 2021 5:10 PM
And why people relate to influencers is because anybody can do it. All you need is a phone, a social media account and a little bit of luck.

So, the idea is just 'anyone' can push what they think is stylish etc on the general public? This proves my point about the general public being quite gullible. If some moron can do it, why don't people who follow influencers simply put together their own 'look'? Why do these people need someone to tell then what to wear, what makeup to use, hair style to have, what fragrance to buy etc? Whatever happened to people using their brains?

As I said upthread, truly stylish people, have innate style and class. They don't need anyone to tell them what to wear or purchase.

Just because these 'influencers' have ambition and want to become famous, that sure doesn't make all the influencers talented or more savvy than the average person. Way too many in this thread are giving these people way too much credit. Luck is involved more than actual talent.

Model Pat Cleveland, one of Halston's fave models, was discovered on a NYC subway. Some saw she had the 'IT' factor. Same with many other models. Most famous models were discovered simply walking down the street, most models never even wanted to become models, ironically, these women ended up becoming the most famous models.

It shouldn't matter what anyone's background is, I discovered that when I entered art high school. There were people from all socio-economic backgrounds, all races etc and we were all talented artists. We were chosen from a small pool of 'artistically gifted students' from our grade schools. Only 2-3 people from each 8th Grade graduating class were chosen to attend this prestigious NYC art high school. (btw, many famous people graduated from this school: fashion designers, actors. actresses, authors etc)

Besides the written test we were required to do on premises, we needed to show a portfolio and were were also required to sketch from a live model and do an architectural rendering of the room we were in the day of the interview.

Do most influencers have any sort of actual creative talent except liking clothes, makeup or whatever they are pushing on the public? Or they they simply want fame and attention?

Where is their training and experience in any of the fields they claim to want to 'influence' in? How many people in their 20s have actual experience in these fields?

The aspirational always want the badge of respectability. They want their kids to be equestrians and go to the best schools. They want to make people think they read books or travel to Florence to see the art. They want cute grandchildren born into wedlock. No one wants to be a joke or, just as bad, a rich joke. Some risers make it. Some don't.

by Anonymousreply 547September 16, 2021 10:58 PM

R539, I'm having trouble understanding your argument. I think true fashion and style starts in urban areas, on the streets, and it gets pushed around until it lands in the mainstream, where mainstream designers mould it into something palatable for the masses. Then an influencer comes along and likes it and then their followers like it. Then stylists get a hold of it and put their clients into these fashions. The people who are truly starting the trends are never invited to things like the Met Gala. And quite frankly the next big trends are already happening in places where the people at the Met Gala wouldn't even dream of going, even the rappers - but the thing is they've been there and they have cred with this people.

I think DL wants this to be some kind of Town & Country, mid century NYC sophisticate party for snooty white people. That ship has sailed.

You mean ghetto fashion, worn by rappers and wannabees, filled with bling and garish shit. Nothing that anyone with any taste would wear to a high fashion event. The Met Ball was not intended for the common folk ( the masses), just as NASCAR wasn't intended for the 1%; I don't understand why everyone makes a big deal about it.

However, if, as another commenter has said, there is another Met Ball in May 2022, perhaps this version was the “let’s throw them a bone and get it out of the way” one. And the real elite will be at the version held in May. Wouldn’t that be a twist.

I think DL wants this to be some kind of Town & Country, mid century NYC sophisticate party for snooty white people. That ship has sailed.

Part of your argument is correct, but not all of it.

Famous people who have actually come from the streets actually want to leave that world behind. Unless they're rappers, the women in particular, especially actresses, want to look elegant, classy and rich, wearing baggy 'urban' clothes and being reminded of where they came from, is actually not part of the current place in their lives. Jennifer Hudson doesn't dress ghetto and neither do any other actresses and singers who want to leave their humble beginnings behind.

The classic high end designers of the past would NEVER think of adopting street fashion into their designs. I have no idea WTF you are going on about as far as that point. Yes, today this goes on with many formerly high end design brands and the new designers who works fro these classic brands. This is a terrible move on their part.

Most of today's 'fashion' is downright laughable: ugly huge orthopedic shoes and sneakers, oversized jackets and coats which look like they were designed for a football player while he was still in his shoulder pads. This is mostly ugly fashion, styles anyone with any sense should never aspire to wear, let alone pay thousands for.

Sure, Gucci, Louis Vuitton etc are now adopting ugly trash culture, then slapping a $8,000 tag on some ugly over sized jacket, ripped jeans. I won't even get into how Balenciaga has been destroyed. Some of the handbags are nice, but the clothes?

In the recent issue of Bazaar, or ELLE, there is an editorial layout of the most disgusting 'clothing'. It harkened back to when designer tried to re-interprete grunge, but much worse.

The sullen looking models were in baggy ripped worn looking jeans, a sweater with several holes under the collar etc, basically clothes which looked like the Salvation Army would reject them!

Of course, everything featured was extremely expensive, the clothes were either by Balenciaga or Vuitton. This is NOT style let alone fashion. Who aspires to look homeless? Or like a heroin addict who picked up whatever clothes they left on their apartment floor, then decided to wear them for a few more days? Who in their right mind decides it's OK to spend thousands on this low-rent 'look' which anyone can purchase from a thrift store?!

Are rich people this gullible to spend $5000 on an ugly ripped sweater, just because some designer slapped their label on it?

Fashion has become a joke.
