Nearly 50 years ago? 50 years ago ‘You Bet Your Life’ was long gone.

I think it was popular 70 years ago. How old is Jay Leno now? There is a reason people have not been clamoring to see him on their television sets.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 2, 2021 1:33 AM |
Of course it is on Fox, no thanks.

Jay Leno was the undisputed king of late night TV. Even when he left momentarily during the whole fiasco with Conan and that 10pm show, when he came back to 11:30 he immediately snatched the ratings crown from Letterman again until he retired. The people loved Jay Leno.

The people loved Johnny Carson. No host after Carson even came close to him. Letterman was always too weird to be loved, and Leno was too bland and never really connected with guests like Carson did.

Bill "Amateur Bartender" Cosby tried a reboot of this. (It was in the 1990s maybe.)
Some things just should be left alone. The show was funny in the 50s with how much Groucho would push the envelope. Those days are long gone.

I really hate looking at his annoying face
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 2, 2021 2:16 AM |
Ugly.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 2, 2021 2:16 AM |
You bet your life I won't be watching.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 2, 2021 2:16 AM |
I wouldn't watch anything Leno does. Even HE looks bored in the promos. .....By the way---COSBY redid this in the 1990s.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 2, 2021 2:19 AM |
Jay must have found some more cars he wants to buy.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 2, 2021 2:21 AM |
Can it literally be deplorable betting their lives?

Jay Leno is a national treasure.

I recall You Bet Your LIfe reruns taking the 11 pm timeslot on WLIV (I think) Channel 56 in Boston when Dark Shadows reruns were canceled.
I hated that DS was going away but I liked Groucho and how he handled the guests.

I knew Groucho Marx. Groucho Marx was a friend of mine. You, Jay Leno are no Groucho Marx.

He looks so weird in the picture at op’s link!

This thread screams frau alert.

We need more fraus.

So you hire someone who derailed the humor of anecdotes by guests, would deliver a punchline in his monologue then try unsuccessfully to extend the laugh by explaining the joke, and had no spontaneity for a job that requires humor and spontaneity.
They had to edit down Groucho's tapings a bit to get the rapid humor of the aired shows.
They are going to need to give Leno a week with the contestants to get similar results.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 5, 2021 3:39 PM |
He bumped uglies with Sharon Osbourne.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 5, 2021 3:51 PM |
They hired the guy who was the reigning king of late night comedy for like two decades, R27. If Jay was still on the Tonight Show, he’d be on top for another decade running.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 5, 2021 6:07 PM |
The show was on top, R29, but that was mostly for the guests. Most people listened to his competitors' monologs before switching to Tonight for musical performances and the guests.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 5, 2021 11:13 PM |
Why would his guests be any better than Letterman’s, R30?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 6, 2021 12:19 AM |
I do not know that they were, R30. I think it depended on who you wanted to see.
But Letterman's monologs were quoted and discussed at the watercooler.
Leno's were not. Even if you wanted to see his guests, you skipped his monolog and watched Letterman, Miller or whoever.

He needs to lose about 50 pounds first because he looks gross now.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 6, 2021 12:26 AM |
I don't hate Leno like a lot of people but he's boring and nd he just can't stay out of the limelight. Also, no one wants a remake of this show.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | September 6, 2021 12:40 AM |
Agree with the weight he needs to lose. His characteristic chin has filled in.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 6, 2021 12:47 AM |
I got no problem with Jay, but he's no Groucho and it's not 1950! If you're bored, go entertain in nursing homes. They need company and a laugh.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 6, 2021 1:55 AM |
Leno's a really nice guy, very kind to people's parents visiting the show and generally presentable.
He can't live without working, he was always a workaholic. He's no Groucho Marx that's for sure but he'll probably do a nice, amusing little show for mostly seniors that will run until he dies.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 6, 2021 2:06 AM |
Total. Asshole.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 6, 2021 2:06 AM |
Youtube has zillions of videos titled- Jay Leno's Garage. It showcases his MANY collectable cars. They should have a video that shows the garage needed for his GINORMOUS chin.

How is this human turd still alive?
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 6, 2021 2:13 AM |
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. OH, HOW I'VE BEEN WAITING!!!!
by Anonymous | reply 41 | September 6, 2021 2:17 AM |
It is probably best for Jay Leno to do a show interacting with regular everyday people, like he did on his Jaywalking segments on the Tonight Show. Nobody working in show business wants anything to do with him, because he earned a reputation for being a backstabbing weasel.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | September 6, 2021 3:34 PM |
Is he giving away his cars each episode?

[QUOTE] Nobody working in show business wants anything to do with him, because he earned a reputation for being a backstabbing weasel.
I just saw Jay do a cameo on The Kominsky Method, which is a very show businessy show. So I wouldn’t say everyone hates him.
And if he came back with a new late night show, I guarantee he wouldn’t have trouble finding guests from Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | September 6, 2021 5:06 PM |
Not a fan!
by Anonymous | reply 45 | September 6, 2021 5:08 PM |
Jay looks drunk or stoned in OP's photo...
by Anonymous | reply 46 | September 6, 2021 5:13 PM |
How disgusting.
How many contestant eyes will now be put out by that chin?
by Anonymous | reply 47 | September 6, 2021 5:16 PM |
Someone like Graham Norton could bring it back, but I can't see Jay brining the improvisation or the drama (contrived as it often is) necessary to make for a successful game show. It was old fashioned by the time it left the air and somehow I don't see any reason for it tocomeback.
