Put on every fabulous piece of clothing, one on topof the other , in case the tornado scatters your belongings and as a bonus, all that clothing will serve as a buffer against things like bricks , lumber, flying cows. Ect....

Light rain, followed by long torrential downpours with heavy winds. This has been the pattern for about six hours now.

The MTA spokesman said on Ch. 4 news (and I'm paraphrasing): After Sandy, they invested in beefing up the tunnels and shorelines to prevent water from coming into the subway from the rivers.
The problem tonight is, storm drains on the streets are blocked or flooded, so water is pouring into the subways that way. (As we see on several videos in this thread.)

[quote] I just got a Citizen alert that there were people trapped in cars that were floating toward the East River. That probably is an exaggeration, but the idea terrifies me.
That happened during the unpredicted nor’easter in the city in Nov or Dec 1990 or 1991. I was on my way to work & had to turn back & go back to my building because debris was flying around and I was soaked through to the skin. I had to call a car service and I told driver “Go down 2nd Ave, not to the FDR because it floods in weather like this.” The guy was Israeli (of course. - there was no other kind) and he wasarguing with me. Anyway…the radio in the car on WCBS was only reporting on was a traffic backup in NJ due to Highway flooding. Meanwhile, people were at that exact time being rescued by police boats from cars on FDR Drive. There was flooding all over the city…our hospital’s parking lot was under water & people’s cars were totaled. My friend lived downtown across from Battery Park City and their building complex had their gas turned off for over a month due to flooded gas pipes. . They had a little balcony and cooked on a Smoky Joe. The elderly people in their building had to get Meals on Wheels because a lot of them didn’t know how to cook in a microwave. I had to cross 1st Ave on foot to get to work and water was almost up to my calf.
I later worked with a woman who had been on the FDR right before the East River tunnel, so she didn’t need to be rescued, but had to abandon her car. . She and others stood in the rain on the rise of grass near Gracie Mansion. A guy went to Dunkin Donuts and passed donuts out while they waited for tow trucks.
But all this happened in the daytime. Even though it was totally unpredicted and even though the news was completely ignoring what was going on & was not giving warnings or telling anyone what to do or what to beware of, at least people could see in daylight hours. This is all happening in the dark.

Subway flooding because the city allows clogging of the drainage lines.
“NYC Transit’s annual goal for track drain cleaning is currently 150,000 linear feet. However, with 418 miles of drains in the system, this figure represents only 7% of the total,” the report states. “[A]t that pace Infrastructure would require approximately 15 years to clean the entire system.”
Easier just to blame "climate change"

People on social media seem to be bitching about how there have been all these "Flash Flood Warnings" on your phone and on Alexa these past few months that turned out to be nothing and so people didn't think this would be a big deal either.
My in-laws, who live in suburban NJ are fine, but they got that tornado warning yesterday, the first in the 35+ years they've been living there. They live in northern NJ and again, it seems the tornadoes were in the southern part of the state so their friends are asking whether this was another overreaction by the NWS and will it cause people to ignore them down the road.

You know what the weather in NYC is like today? Reminds me of the gorgeous weather we had on 9/11/01. Exactly the same intensely blue sky, mild, light breeze with no humidity. Really a perfect weather day.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | September 2, 2021 5:23 PM |
The sky was so blue that day

True dat, R151.
I’m 65 and I have the app on my phone.

R152, we had intense thunderstorms on the evening of 9/10/2001 and when the cold front blew it out, we had that perfect clear, crisp day on 9/11/2001, bringing us a sky that was so blue that day.

[quote] can anyone report on the 4, 5, and 6?
I can report that the 6 doesn’t go to Brooklyn. You’ll have to get off the 4 or 5 and transfer to a 6 at Union Square.

We've now been on the plane for 4 hours. The fact they even let us board for a ten minute window before the storm hit us fill blown is crazy to me. I would've been cool sitting in the airport at the bar.
[quote] We are without food, barely any snacks and Dasani water which tastes like pennies. The pilot is literally texting and using his weather app to get us info. @united what the actual fuck.
[...]
[quote] The pilot has been telling us just 10 more mins since 7pm. It is 10:55pm. We're apparently getting towed. A plane. A plane is getting towed because we cannot connect to a jet bridge due to the lightning. Idk where we getting towed to. Like no explanations.
[quote] We're grounded and have internet so the lack of communication from @united to the crew is appalling. Any info would be great. Like should we wait this out. Is there another crew. Are there refunds. We cannot even use the app. The app says we are in flight en route. Am I in the show Manifest???
[quote] So let's say we even get off this plane...we need to stay at the airport because the exits to EWR Newark are flooded. We still have no idea what is going on. Who tf let us board. Seriously. This is fucking insane .
[quote] The captain keeps telling us they can't do anything bc of the lightning. Cool we get that. But why did you board us in the first place? Or is y'all weather app not as good as our iPhone ones? @united y'all really said let go and let God.
[quote] We are now trying to conserve gas so all lights are completely off. We're just in silence as if everything is normal. Crew does not have power banks. There are no outlets. A lot of people are absolutely clueless. No one is saying sh*t and crew members are snapping at randoms. People are starting to freak because if we lose all the gas the air and circulation will go off. And let's not forget we cannot de-board, the crew is in control of protocol they never dealt with and are clueless. We have the blind leading the blind. @United do you plan on refunding us for making us board a plane during a catastrophic storm and then have us sit here for going into 4.5hrs and counting?
[quote] A flight to Tampa is 2 and some change hours. We should've landed like 2.5 hrs ago. There are children on this flight crying out of hunger bc why tf would you board us?? Parents were not equipped. None of us are. Y'all are the airline. What the fuck.
[quote] So we were supposed to be tower to another gate. The tow is no longer coming. The captain is making an executive decision to use the remaining power we have to get to another gate so we can try to deplane. If not, we will again be indefinitely stuck on the tarmac.
[quote] Every time they give us an update it's to tell us there is literally no update or whatever hope they gave us in the last update is no longer an option. Like I cannot believe the captain was like stay calm but we have no way to get off or get you to safety because we are cut off and on our own. Lmaooooooooooooooooooooo like?
[quote] BRB. Saving battery in case we stuck til 2am. It's 11:30pm. We are now officially at 4.5hrs stuck on a grounded plane. Captain had to stop because now there's a block in the route we are trying to go and visibility is low due to storm and lightning.
[quote] Wait wait wait. The captain just said if we make it to the gate basically "you don't gotta go home but you gotta get the fuck outta here". They have no idea what's going on. No info. Our flight has still not been officially cancelled. So associates can't even help us. @united NJ AND NYC UNDER WATER, WE BEEN STUCK ON A PLANE GROUNDED FOR LITERALLY HOURS AND Y'ALL DIDN'T OFFICIALLY CANCEL OR DELAY US??
[quote] Everytime I get up to use the bathroom, the attendent is like "we need you to sit bc we are about to move". Same story for an hour. I'm about to lose patience. I am on the heaviest day of my period. More than one type of flood going on here.

R157, United hasn’t flown into Brooklyn since 1960.
R148 should keep trying to get updates on the 4 or 5 train.

The 4,5,6 are all running with partially suspended service r148.

What about the N train? Anyone take it to 8th Street? Is it going there?
I've checked mta.info but doesn't say much.

I know the 6 doesn't go to Brooklyn. But I'm going to East 23 and need to transfer at Union Square. Anyway it seems too messy. I'll stay home and do something on Zoom. I find the MTA to be crap normally or difficult to use. Didn't know about the Twitter account. I looked at it and liked ig.it

by Anonymous | reply 165 | September 2, 2021 6:33 PM |
R164, that's true. I live on the Q line, perhaps I could transfer to the local at Union Square. It's about two extra blocks walk to my destination but even as am eldergay I might make it.

People in my neighborhood don't take express busses, R167. That's for deeper in Brooklyn.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | September 2, 2021 8:16 PM |
Excuse me R172?
I’m just south of Prospect Park and that is not “deeper in Brooklyn”.
When the subway is having problems and I need to go to Manhattan, I catch the express bus. That’s why there are pickup points from “deeper in Brooklyn” to the Kensington area.
Perhaps you’d like a lift Princess. Stand on the corner and present hole, and I’ll swing by and pick you up.

Scary shit. As a native here in New Jersey, I've never seen a such strong rains and tornadoes. Yes...I've heard small tornadoes happen here, but very rarely. Now, south Jersey, Mullica Hill, had an EF3...major, what you would see in Oklahoma. Last July, Long Beach Island had an EF2 tornado. The intensity of these storms is getting worse.

[quote] But it’s absolutely gorgeous out today.
Weather is usually beautiful after a hurricane clears out. Takes the rain, mists fog & humidity with it. Many is the time growing up when I heard oldsters say “I kinda hope we get this hurricane so it takes this heat & humidity with it.”
My mother said she remembered the Hurricane of 38 as being one of the most beautiful days she ever saw. “But you know, when I think back in it, I think maybe I remember it being so sunny because so many trees had come down.”

Trying to divert attention from the fact that, in his nearly eight years in office, he has not given a second's worth of thought to emergency planning. He's actually blaming the weather service for not properly informing him how severe the storm would be.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | September 4, 2021 3:07 AM |
DeBlasio is the laziest...talky, talk, talk....blah, blah....mayor ever. He loves to be in front of the camera with a lot of lip service...and does as little as possible. His self importance, as he sees himself...has made NYC worse during his years. I think he's the worst mayor that I can remember.

New York City’s streets are notoriously dirty — but a car-oriented initiative by Mayor de Blasio during the pandemic allowed even more filth to pile up, with much of it winding up in sewer drains as the remnants of Hurricane Ida left swaths the five boroughs underwater.
De Blasio in March 2020 slashed the city’s alternate side parking rules, requiring motorists to move their cars once a week instead of twice to make way for street sweepers. He likened the move as an olive branch to New Yorkers who were asked to stay inside during the darkest days of the pandemic.
But nearly 18 months later, the reduction remains in place. Streets are cleaned half as often as before the pandemic — and many notice more loose trash and dirt in their neighborhoods.
While Ida walloped New York, many of the city’s 153,000 catch basins became clogged. In some cases locals were forced to run out and clear them to keep their blocks from flooding. Those drains are managed by the city Department of Environmental Protection, which dispatched crews to inspect and clear them as the storm approached.
But clearing those drains didn’t keep trash on the streets from clogging them up.
