“The power of the dog” teaser released
Charismatic rancher Phil Burbank inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.
Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, an Australia-New Zealand co-production, will premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival this week.
Based on the 1967 novel by Thomas Savage, the ’20s Montana-set film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Frances Conroy, Keith Carradine, Peter Carroll and Adam Beach.
The Power of the Dog is produced by See-Saw Films, Brightstar, BBC Films, Big Shell Films and Max Films. Netflix has the worldwide rights excluding the UK, with Transmission Films to distribute theatrically in Australia and New Zealand.
Emile Sherman and Iain Canning produce with Roger Frappier, Campion and Tanya Seghatchian.

This sounds interesting and Oscar-baity for sure. They are saying DL favorite Kirsten Dunst is amazing and her Oscar nod (maybe winning) is secure. Let’s root for this girl!!

Wow, this sounds amazing, especially the novel for having been written in 1968 and dealing with repressed homosexuality in a Western novel. And Jane always bring even more to the table then what she starts with, so it’s bound to be excellent. She also gets remarkable performances out of her actors and great cinematography.

Why is DL more interested in a biopic about an over-represented and at this moment, tiring character like Diana played by one of the worst actresses of her generation than this movie, with great cast, director and LGBT storyline?
WHY?

The actors developed their chemistry over the course of a two-week boot camp Campion arranged, during which time she included some exercises that required them to stay in character. “Of course we chatted with each other, but there was also some little secret sauce in there somewhere, the stuff you leave to the moment,” Cumberbatch said.

I'm in for this movie.
Just because Cumberbatch has played cerebral characters in the past does not mean he won't smolder on the screen in Campion's film. I've always felt that under the intellectual veneer he so often projects, he's a man on fire.

Went to a screening last night. Really, really good. It might be criticized for being a tad slow moving but that’s Campion’s approach to the setting and time period. The cinematography is fantastic-Ari Wegner (who’s female) deserves an Oscar nomination. Cumberbatch is great. Dunst and Pliemons are fine. The kid is excellent. There are big clues signalling what ultimately happens but I didn’t put them together. I strongly recommend watching this on a big screen before it goes on Netflix.

Being a Jane Campion production, it could either be great or an overblown, over-praised mediocre piece of crap like "The Piano."

I read the book about 2 years ago r18. I liked it. I have been eagerly awaiting the release of this movie. The book has very clearly drawn characters, and I think JC is very good at showing character and their development. I like her lyrical yet pacey work. They filmed it in a really beautiful part of New Zealand.

R29, I agree with you about The Piano but this one is damn good.
I think Cumberbatch is creepy, too, but he looks good in this. He gets nekkid a few times (when he’s bathing himself in the stream/river/whatever) and he’s in good shape. There’s also a scene where he caresses himself with some sort of thin fabric and pleasures himself. That was rather sensuous.

The Power of the Dog was recommended on the Books for Fall reading thread. I gave it a go, but lost interest after Page 15. The book is set in Montana, so I can't really see the point of Brit and Aussie actors playing Yanks, especially when they keep tripping over their Brit/Aussie vowels. Both the book and the film are available for free reading/streaming online.

r64, well, I'm cheap and would never pay $10 for an ebook, so I'm definitely not sure it's worth that. There's a copy on the Open Library if you're comfortable reading it that way. There's a long waitlist for a two-week loan now, but it's available for an hour-long loan if you're willing to read it in chunks, or keep checking it out. (Like I said, I'm cheap.) Savage is a good writer, so it's an easy, engaging read, even if I didn't really love it. But I didn't feel like I wasted my time either.

The movie is excellent but it screws it up at the end. Makes you actually thinks there’s redemption for all the characters but then there isn’t. It’s like brokeback mountain if ennis lost jack twist at a really young age and then became a sadistic psycho making everyone as miserable as he is.

I watched it last night.
The acting is great (Dunst will win an Oscar), but the gay subplot is being overhyped. Other than some general male nudity (men bathing), and a scene with some posing magazines, Phil's (Cumberbatch) homosexuality is implied. You can easily deduce he has a relationship with an older man, and he develops feelings for a younger, possibly gay man (although I deduced the friend he calls "The Professor" is his boyfriend).
Overall, the film's rushed second half and reliance on deus ex machina keeps it from being truly great. Still, I see at least a few Oscar nominations/wins in its future.
