The Complicated Truth About the Royal Family's Reaction to Princess Diana's Death

It's been 24 years since Diana was killed in a car crash at only 36 years old, leaving behind a complex legacy that represents different things to different members of a family that had no choice but to carry on and put up a strong front in her wake.

Amazing that it's been 24 years. Still one of the saddest things ever..

There has always been a faction that's fed up with the royals, and the family will forever have its critics, but that time in 1997 remains one of Queen Elizabeth II's few serious fumbles in the now 68 years she's been on the throne.

It's like Diana is still with us. That's one hell of an enduring legacy. She really was someone who made an impact.

[quote] Still one of the saddest things ever..

Why do you think that? Of course the death of a young woman is tragic, but why was this particular death “the saddest thing ever”?

I’m with Hitchins...the hysterical, over the top mourning was a national embarrassment. It was also deeply hypocritical because a great deal of people were starting to laugh at her before she died.

My 24th birthday was a couple of days before the funeral and my boyfriend at the time and I went to London for dinner. We walked past all the flowers at KP (the smell was overwhelming) and we were both struck by how vacuous and unoriginal the tributes pinned on the railings were....dozens and dozens of “Queen of Hearts” playing cards. People bought into a narrative and their grief was emtirely performative, not genuine. How could it be genuine when none of them had ever even met the woman.

Pathetic the whole thing- and I honestly think that’s when our current infestation of woke ideology took root. Feelings over facts.

Is it true that Diana called the paps to alert them to the plan to leave the Paris Ritz by the back door? I remember Lady C. talking about this, but I find no online confirmation of it.

by Anonymousreply 9September 2, 2021 1:43 PM

I don’t think that’s true, R9.

My impression is that Diana’s relationship with the press was complicated....she wanted to use them as a vehicle to get her viewpoint across but hated the intrusiveness that went with it (and this conflict seems to me to be understandable in her position).

But I don’t believe for a minute that she enjoyed being chased by photographers. It’s not like she needed the publicity.
